1838 1C MS64 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC.
N-14, Early Die State, R.4. This is the rarest 1838 variety among all of those actually known to Howard Newcomb. Two additional varieties have been discovered since his work was published. Only three Mint State examples of this die combination are known, and only one of those is clearly finer than this example. Prior to 1976, the N-14 variety was considered an extreme rarity, and was identified by its prominent obverse die break. In 1976, Richard Punchard found the first perfect die example, and today the N-14 die combination is only R.4. Both sides of this pleasing cent have deep steel-brown color with underlying frosty luster. A touch of faded mint red is visible on the reverse. This is an important opportunity for the variety specialist.
Ex: H. Devore; Russell Wyatt Sale (Superior, 9/85), lot 666.

1838 1C N-14, R.4. MS64 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC.
Perfect obverse and reverse dies. What appears to be a die crack through star 9 and the outer hair bun is actually a minor planchet lamination. Graded AU50 by Bill Noyes and listed by him in a tie for fourth finest known of the variety. This is a scarce variety that was first publicized in the Dr. French catalog by B. Max Mehl in 1929. It was always identified by the massive rim break at star 6 (see next lot), and was considered unique until 1974. Two years later, a perfect die example was found, and since that time many such coins have been identified. It remains a scarce variety, however, and is still the rarest of those varieties known to Howard Newcomb. Glossy medium brown surfaces, the reverse tending toward olive. Traces of gold color on the high points, with a small corrosion spot on the reverse at ED. Hints of deeply faded red mint color are evident on both sides under close scrutiny.
Ex: George Ramont (4/17/1978).
Envelope Included.

Rim breaks by stars 1 and 7 are more advanced, extending to star 6 and beneath the date. This is a splendid example with full cartwheel luster shining through deep steel-brown and olive toning. Hints of faded red mint color are noted on both sides, more so on the reverse. Splashes of ebony are present on the reverse.
Ex: Symonds (10/25/1968).
