1924-D $20 MS64 PCGS.
The 1924-D is the first of the scarce to rare mintmarked issues that continue through the end of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. The majority of Mint state survivors in today's market originated in European hoards of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Writing in 1988, Breen stated that a further 70 pieces were discovered in the summer of 1983. (Perhaps these coins were in the same Central American hoard that produced several Mint State 1909-D and 1922-S Double Eagles at around this time?)
The otherwise orange-gold color yields to warmer golden-rose hues toward the centers. Die deterioration around the rims is often a problem for the issue, but the present survivor displays sharp definition in virtually all areas. There are no singularly reportable surface blemishes. A very conservatively graded example worthy of an astute collector. Population: 126 in 64, only 5 finer (7/05).

1924-D MS 64 PCGS.
In terms of overall rarity, the 1924-D is a median rarity in the series, but is very elusive in high grades with Akers rating MS 64 coins as a low R.7. This piece displays frosty mint luster and a powerful cartwheel effect. The surfaces are orange-gold overall with a flash of bright pink in the center of the reverse. Boldly struck throughout. Population: 55 in 64, only 1 is finer (that being an MS 66, 10/98).

1924-S $20 MS64 NGC.
A very appealing coin for the grade that boasts strong luster and a bold strike. Liberty's face and body are free of all but trivial handling ticks, although we note one nick on her left leg about midway down her calf. The reverse has scattered ticks, primarily on the eagle and suns rays, both of which tend to hide the signs of contact. For the date collector, a 1924-S remains one of the scarcer coins to find in mint state grades, and is nearly impossible to locate to finer than the presently offered specimen. In fact the NGC and PCGS population reports show 153 coins graded this high with 11 pieces seen finer between the two services.
Curiously, this date used to be considered a great rarity, with perhaps five specimens known. Auction records were set the few times a coin was offered. The first auction appearance of a 1924-S double eagle was in the 1947 ANA sale, and that specimen hammered down for an astonishing $2,250 at that time. By the middle 1950s a few more 1924-S double eagles turned up, then more were found hiding in European banks, reducing the rarity level to a scarce coin, but certainly not rare. The discovery of additional specimens was very similar to the story of the 1903-O silver dollar, which was virtually unknown in any grade before they turned up the great Treasury Hoard released in the 1950s and 1960s. Of course, this is still a scarce coin, but many other dates remain more elusive.

1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS.
The 1924-S twenty, with a mintage of nearly 3 million pieces, was one of the most heavily melted issues in the series. In fact, almost all of the survivors came from French and Swiss banks. Bowers (2004) states: "...following the tapping of overseas hoards, the 1924-S remains elusive, but enough exist that they come on the market with regularity, usually in lower Mint State grades."
The MS64 example presented here exhibits an impressive strike, especially on the fingers of both of Liberty's hands, on the toes, and on the eagle's feathers. Glowing luster emanates from both sides, which assume apricot and brass-gold patina imbued with traces of light tan. A few light contact marks do not detract from the overall eye appeal. Population: 79 in 64, 3 finer (10/06).
