Burbank was one of just a handful of southern California locations where Charley Colver, try as he might for over half a century, could not ever obtain even one example. A great rarity from the Herget collection which has not appeared at public sale since 1989. It is, by several grades, the finest of only seven reported Series 1875 San Francisco $20 National Gold Bank Notes, and is one of only three reported white paper National Gold Bank Notes of any denomination believed to exist. Its pedigree can be traced to the famed Amon Carter, Jr. collection, and finally to a Lyn Knight sale in 1989. Mr. Herget obtained the note in 1991 from John Rowe of Dallas. Along the way, it has been variously graded as Very Fine (twice) and Fine (once). Either can be amply justified by this attractive and well printed piece, but we will compromise and label the note here as
Fine-Very Fine,
a grade that truly reflects the reality of the note and should satisfy even the fussiest of graders. One of the other two White Paper examples was offered at this year's ANA convention at a well into six figures price. That may be high, but in this market, where rarity and condition are all important, it is likely that this numismatic treasure will now likely reach or exceed...

An excessively rare bank in an excessively rare location, where the number of appearances from both of the town's issuers during the past sixty years can be counted on the fingers of two hands...with four fingers left over. This bank issued only Brown Backs, high denomination Red Seals and high denomination Date Backs before the receiver arrived to close the bank in October of 1918. Just three notes are known to have survived, with our records showing only two appearances of any kind at public sale, the last coming when this note was sold over six years ago for $6150. Expect it to bring considerably more, perhaps multiples more, before the hammer falls tonight.

An excessively rare note rediscovered after over fifty years, and easily the finest known of the eight $20 Stockton National Gold Bank Notes in public hands. (One piece, the lone 1875 example recorded, is forever ensconced in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.) This example was obtained by Malcolm Trask from the May, 1952 Numismatic Gallery sale, where it was lot 1821. This Abe Kosoff sale is now long forgotten, but the currency offered therein comprised almost 200 First Charter nationals alone, and an assortment of National Gold Bank Notes including a $100 from Petaluma and a $50 from San Francisco. Alone of all of the Gold Bank Notes offered, this example was graded Fine, a grade with which we have absolutely no reason to disagree with some fifty years later, as the colors, signatures, and overall appearance easily merit the
Fine
designation. With only one other $20 Stockton example grading even as high as Very Good (which we sold back in 1997), this long lost note offers a rare opportunity for present day collectors to add a rare "finest known" to their holdings. With even mediocre Stockton tens selling in the mid-five figure range, expect this outstanding twenty to easily reach and quite probably exceed our likely conservative estimate.
