Sold For:

Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938) CGC VG- 3.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Featuring the introduction of Superman, this book single-handedly raised the comic industry from a second-rate medium of strip reprints to a legitimate business whose sales would eventually surpass even the best selling magazines.
Action
#1 is the holy grail of comic books, lusted after by virtually anyone who considers themselves a collector. Naturally, since it's from 1938, high-grade copies are next to impossible to find, even if you could afford one! In fact, according to CGC's most recent census, just four unrestored copies have been certified at grades higher than FN- 5.5. Some light staining here keeps this copy at mid-grade. But, that's a solid grade for this historic issue. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $76,000.

Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) CGC VG- 3.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Iconic and awe-inspiring, this groundbreaking issue currently ranks behind only
Action Comics
#1 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list.
The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
identifies this as an "uncommon" issue, and it's awfully difficult to find in nicer condition than this offering. We have previously sold just two unrestored copies, both of which bore lower CGC grades than this. Batman's creator, Bob Kane, just 22 years old when this issue hit the stands, handled cover and interior art on this issue which introduced the Caped Crusader and Commissioner Gordon. Even at this grade, CGC has certified just four other unrestored copies with higher grades, none higher than Very Fine. CGC notes, "2 small pieces of tape on spine." Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $62,000.

Action Comics
#1. Batman's creator, Bob Kane, just 22 years old when this issue hit the stands, handled cover and interior art on this issue which introduced the Caped Crusader and Commissioner Gordon. A nice cover image with good colors, there is a small piece out of the top right edge. Even at this grade, CGC has certified just four other unrestored copies with higher grades, none higher than Very Fine. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $62,000.

Marvel Comics #1 (Timely, 1939) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Marvel/Timely followed DC into the Golden Age of Comics some 18 months after
Action Comics
#1, but this historic book has rivaled its competitor in demand, value, and significance for decades, at times over the years even being valued higher than the book Superman made famous. Timely's Big Three superheroes; the Sub-Mariner by Bill Everett, the Human Torch by Carl Burgos, and the Angel by Paul Gustavson make their first appearances in the issue, the dynamic cover for which was created by pulp artist Frank R. Paul. One of the few books that single-handedly defines the eyebrow-raising factor of a collection could be yours! Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $37,500.

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC GD 2.0 Tan to off-white pages.
A truly historical book,
Superman
#1 arrived scarcely a year after the Man of Steel's first appearance in
Action
#1, proving his meteoric rise in popularity. Superman's appearance heralded the start of the superhero genre's popularity, and his own series was the first comic devoted to a single character.
Superman
#1 is one of the most sought-after books in our hobby, and it is extremely rare to own one in unrestored condition. Despite having a detached centerfold and cover, the book has rich colors and presents well in the CGC holder. Considering that
Superman
#1 is listed as the third most valuable comic by Overstreet, this copy is relatively affordable in it's present condition. CGC notes, "Cover and centerfold detached." Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value = $16,000.

All-American Comics #16 (DC, 1940) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages.
All-American
#16 is widely regarded as one of the scarcest DC key issues, and ranks fifth on Overstreet's top ten list of most valuable Golden Age comics. This spectacular cover by Sheldon Moldoff introduces the Green Lantern, a significant addition to DC's stable of heroes. Overstreet lists this as a "rare" book; Gerber, in his
The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books
calls it "scarce." Either way, it rarely shows up in any grade, much less in unrestored condition. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $17,420.

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent GD/VG 3.0 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
This is the fourth most-valuable comic of all according to Overstreet, and it's a milestone in the history of comics. Though Superman had been very well-received in the pages of
Action Comics
, it was unheard-of to devote an entire series to a character who was created for the comic books and didn't come from the cartoons or newspaper strips. DC risked it, and the series was a smash hit. The issue's famous cover is by Superman's co-creator Joe Shuster. Since restored copies of this issue are the rule rather than the exception, we suggest you give this professionally restored specimen your full consideration. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $18,250; VG 4.0 value = $36,500.

Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Not only does this historic issue feature the origin of Batman, but it contains the first appearance of his arch-nemesis, Joker, as well as the first appearance of Catwoman. Few covers are as recognizable as this classic representation by Bob Kane; and few historic comics are as desirable as
Batman
#1. More often than not, when you can find this book at al, it has been restored. This copy is unrestored, and in an affordable grade. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $13,534.

Adventure Comics #40 (DC, 1939) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Cream to off-white pages.
An unrestored copy of this much sought-after comic is a welcome sight indeed! This issue is currently ranked #11 on Overstreet's list of the most valuable comic books, and it received Overstreet's seldom-used "rare" designation. It's got the
Adventure
debut of the Sandman, one of the earliest superheroes in comics and the first costumed hero to appear in this long-running series. Overstreet once noted the Sandman's significance as "a transition crime fighter who stuck tenaciously to the trusty regalia of the pulp heroes." The character's first published appearance was in the 1939
New York World's Fair Comics
, but this issue's story is believed to have been created before that one. Bert Christman, who later met his death in World War II, was the artist on the feature, but the cover is the work of Creig Flessel, and it's that classic image that solidifies this issue's status as an enduring collectible. Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $4,500; VG 4.0 value = $9,000. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 3.0, 7 higher.

Adventure Comics #40 (DC, 1939) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages.
This amazing cover by Creig Flessel introduced the world to the ominous look of the Sandman, who made his
Adventure Comics
debut here (this is believed to be the first Sandman story to be created, with his
New York World's Fair Comics
appearance beating it to publication). This issue is called "rare" by Overstreet, and unrestored copies seem to be particularly hard to find. The best CGC-graded copy is only a 7.0, and only a handful have been graded higher than our offering. This issue is number 11 in the 2004 Overstreet list of the most valuable Golden Age books; you can't go wrong with this key issue. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value = $8,750. Archie Comics #1 (MLJ, 1942) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white to white pages.
It's rare for the owner of an
Archie
#1 to want to part with his or her copy, because it's a significant book in the Archie line. For one thing, it has the story of how Archie met Veronica, in which the folks at MLJ simply discarded the previous story told in
Pep Comics
#26 (in which the two just met on the street). This time, Archie reads about the lovely New York debutante-to-be in the paper, and he's so lovestruck that he writes to her and invites her to his prom in Riverdale! The issue is also notable for having the first appearance of Mrs. Andrews (Archie's mom), and of course because it's the first issue of a series that's still in publication today. The series is considered the first teen comic by Overstreet, and this issue is number 51 on the Guide's list of the 100 most valuable Golden Age books. We've seen even a Poor copy of this book sell for big bucks, and our offering here puts that one to shame. Considering that the highest-graded copy in CGC's census is just a 6.5, we'd say this copy will make some lucky Archie collector very happy. Overstreet 2005 GD 2.0 value = $1,294; VG 4.0 value = $2,588. CGC census 12/05: 2 in 3.0, 5 higher.

Detective Comics #35 (DC, 1940) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Cream to off-white pages.
A mere
two
copies have been certified with higher grades than this one to date! Where are the rest? Well, many (most?) have been restored, so the opportunity to grab a blue-label copy should be taken advantage of. This issue was the start of Batman's run as the permanent cover star of this title, a streak that's still going today! This particular issue is also famous for its splash panel, which shows Batman holding a smoking gun. It's tough to even
think
about passing up such an early adventure of one of the most collectible characters in comics. Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $1,056; VG 4.0 value = $2,112. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 3.0, 2 higher.

Sensation Comics #1 (DC, 1942) CGC VG 4.0 Off-white pages.
This excellent original-owner copy is considered by Overstreet to be one of the 30 most valuable comic books. It features the second appearance of Wonder Woman, her debut coming in
All Star Comics
#8 only a month earlier. This is generally thought of as Part Two of her origin. The story that became the first episode of the 1970s TV show has her leaving Paradise Island and heading to the U.S. where she adopts her "Diana Prince" identity. Making their debuts in this issue were Wildcat, Mr. Terrific, and the Black Pirate by Sheldon Moldoff. Jon Blummer is credited with the issue's cover (despite what the CGC holder says), and the Wonder Woman story is drawn by H. G. Peter. Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $5,320. CGC census 9/06: 2 in 4.0, 18 higher.
