1838 50C PR66 PCGS.
Ex: Pittman. Just two proof 1838 half dollars have been certified, both by PCGS with the other coin graded PR64. The recently sold Byers collection, which offered many early proof half dollars, did not have a proof example of this date. When this coin was offered as part of the Pittman collection, David Akers wrote that three proofs of this date were known to him. He commented: "It is interesting to note that, in proof, the 1838 half dollar from the Philadelphia Mint is actually substantially more rare than the famous 1838 half dollar from the New Orleans Mint since all of the known 1838-O half dollars were struck in proof, while just a few of the 1838 Philadelphia issues were minted in that format."
An impressive Premium Gem, this coin is one of the great rarities among early American proof coinage, and was considered by Akers to be "one of the greatest and most important rarities among all of John Jay Pittman's proof coins." It is a sharply struck piece with every hair detail neatly and completely delineated. The stars are sharp and show every individual radial and center. The reverse has each feather fully defined with a sharp shield, fully defined claws, and complete veins in the leaves. The fields are deeply mirrored and the devices are fully lustrous, imparting a wonderful cameo appearance, although the toning precludes such a designation. Both sides are deeply toned with lovely blue, violet, russet, and gold color. The right obverse field has a large lint mark and each side has a few smaller ones. The obverse has a faint hairlines on Liberty's cheek and neck, and a few light ivory "water spots." The reverse is virtually flawless. The visual appearance of this piece is exactly the same as it was when David Akers offered it in the Pittman sale, and it is probably identical to its physical beauty when owned by Howard Newcomb over half a century ago.
Only three proofs are known, to the best of our knowledge:
PR66 PCGS.

1886 50C PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC.
The 1886 is one of the low total mintage dates from the 1880s. In this case, only 5,000 business strikes were produced along with 886 proofs. While proofs are generally more available than high grade business strikes, this is a special coin for the collector who appreciates the finest 19th century proofs. The fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and the devices are heavily frosted. Flashy brilliance except for a slight accent of golden over the denticles on each side. Census: 1 in 66, 2 finer (8/06).

Auction 416
| Lot: 1960 | Sep 16, 2006
Sold For:
$9,775.00
1921-D 50C MS62 PCGS.
All three of the Walking Liberty half dollar issues of 1921 are scarce dates. The 1921-D has the lowest mintage of them all, at 208,000 pieces (and the lowest mintage of the entire series). Somewhat surprisingly, the 1921-S is the scarcest of the three issues, even though its mintage of 548,000 coins is more than double that of either the '21 or the '21-D.
This example is as well struck as any '21-D that we have seen in recent years. Liberty's head and hand are quite adequately defined, and only minimal weakness is noted on the upper skirt lines and on the eagle's right (facing) leg. Pleasing luster illuminates each side, and the only hints of color appear in a few faint splashes of golden-tan, near the borders. Surface marks are small and there are very few for the grade. A pleasing and highly desirable representative of this important key date.
From The Big Tex Registry Set of Walking Liberty Halves.

| Lot: 2078 | Sep 16, 2006
Sold For:
$9,775.00
1919-D 50C MS62 PCGS.
A pleasing example of this rarely seen, key date issue in the Walker series. As always, the head is softly struck and there is also a noticeable lack of definition on the hand, skirt lines of Liberty, and the eagle's feathers. However, full mint luster sparkles over both sides. An important coin for the advanced collector of this popular series.

Auction 408
| Lot: 1779 | Jun 3, 2006
Sold For:
$9,775.00
1888 50C PR66 Deep Cameo NGC.
Only 12,833 Half Dollars were struck in 1888 in both business strike and proof format. Of that number, a mere 832 proofs were produced. The brilliant surfaces of this coin display unusually deep mirrors in the fields, mirrors that rival the watery reflectivity seen on proofs struck a hundred years later in the 1980s. The devices are very heavily frosted and present a stark white-on-black cameo contrast on each side. The fields are unhairlined and there are only the tiniest mint-made imperfections that are evident with a loupe. Outstanding quality and unparalleled eye appeal. Population: 1 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (10/05).
