Sold For:
$97,750.00
1880 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1662, Pollock-1862, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
George Morgan's Coiled Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Deeply mirrored fields on both sides serve to highlight the devices of this lovely Gem Cameo proof. Both sides have brilliant light gray color with a dash of pale gold toning on parts of the obverse. Portions of the hair details are weakly defined due to striae from the planchet preparation process. Affected are a few strands of hair above the ear, as well as some of the braids on the coil of hair at the top of the obverse.
Like the other aluminum stellas, it is thought that just four to six examples are known. Among these are the set of four from the Jeff Browning Collection and the Garrett Collection set of four that was bought by Harry Bass. Three of the four Garrett pieces were retained by the Bass Foundation and are now on display at the ANA in Colorado Springs, CO. The fourth coin from that set was sold in the first Bass Collection auction by Bowers and Merena, thus the set is no longer intact. Two examples were offered in the King Farouk sale (Sotheby's, 2/1954), but neither is traceable today. Other appearances include an example in the 1979 ANA Sale by New England Rare Coin Auctions, an example in RARCOA's May 1969 sale that cannot be identified today, and one sold as part of a four piece set (three aluminum and one copper) by Kagin's in their sale of May 1978. The specimen we are offering is the Kagin's May 1978 coin.
Ex: Kagin's (50th Anniversary Sale, 5/1978), lot 1061.

Auction 1121
| Lot: 1865 | Jan 11, 2009
Sold For:
$74,750.00
1879 $1 Schoolgirl Dollar, Judd-1609, Pollock-1805, Low R.7, PR66 Red PCGS.
The famous Schoolgirl dollar design, credited to George T. Morgan and only available on the Judd-1608 through Judd-1610 varieties. Judd-1610 is unique, and the silver Judd-1608 is highly contested, which makes the copper, reeded edge Judd-1609 a good selection for the advanced pattern specialist. Liberty has a youthful appearance, and her hair flows gracefully beneath the bust. According to uspatterns.com, "The schoolgirl name dates back to the April 1891 New York Coin and Stamp sale auction of the F.W. Doughty collection and was probably given by David Proskey." The reverse features the Defiant Eagle motif used earlier on the Judd-1512 1877 half dollar, and later adapted for the 1915-S Panama-Pacific quarter eagle. 1879 silver dollar patterns were created by each of the Mint's three engravers: William Barber, his son Charles Barber, and George T. Morgan. The elder Barber's design (Judd-1605) was perfunctory. Charles Barber's Washlady motif (Judd-1603) is distinctive and well known, although less beloved than Morgan's Schoolgirl dollar. None of these designs were destined to be struck for circulation. Mint officials were reportedly unhappy with the issued Morgan dollar design, but once it achieved a workable average die life, it made little practical sense to risk its replacement. The 1878 Bland-Allison Act obligated the mint to produce unprecedented mintages of silver dollars, and in fact, the New Orleans Mint re-opened in 1879 with the purpose of coining the denomination.
Fire-red and orange luster endow this beautiful Premium Gem. The strike is needle-sharp, and the grade is only limited by a few pinpoint carbon flecks. The flashy fields further ensure the formidable eye appeal. Only about 10 examples are known of Judd-1609, and this high grade piece presents an opportunity that may not come again for several years.

Auction 422
| Lot: 1573 | Jan 6, 2007
Sold For:
$74,750.00
1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1636, Pollock-1834, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS.
The obverse features the Flowing Hair portrait of Charles E. Barber, with a figure of Liberty facing left, LIBERTY on her coronet. Around the rim, punctuated by stars, *6*G*.3*S*.7*C*7*G*R*A*M*S*, with the date 1879 below. On the reverse is a large, five-pointed star with the incused inscription ONE / STELLA / 400 CENTS. Around the star are E PLURIBUS UNUM and DEO EST GLORIA, and near the rim UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FOUR DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, visible through the PCGS encapsulation. Although a unique Small Head variant of this copper pattern was struck, the Judd-1636 pieces were struck from the same dies as the gold stellas. The www.uspatterns.com website estimates that about a dozen or more pieces exist.
This delightful copper pattern makes a good accompaniment for the gold stellas also in this sale (three at this writing). The Hon. John A. Kasson's mission to introduce an international coinage (and coincidentally to create more uses for the silver flowing from the Western silver mines, through the medium of the goloid metric dollars), was responsible for the idealistic, less-than-practical, nonutilitarian, not-especially advantaged gold stella coinage and its cousins. The nominal value in U.S. currency was four dollars, and the international equivalents--more or less--were eight Austrian florins, eight Dutch florins, 20 French francs, 20 Italian lire, and 20 Spanish pesetas--but
the coins were not exactly worth any of those overseas measures, and of course those values fluctuated against one another, just as they do today.
Compounding the problem, the four dollar stella was contemplated to be produced in an awkward "metric" gold alloy--6 grams of gold, 0.3 grams of silver, and 0.7 of copper (hence the obverse legend)--that had never before been produced at the Mint. (Many numismatists have concluded that neither were the pattern gold pieces prod

1879 $1 Schoolgirl Dollar, Judd-1609, Pollock-1805, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
The popular "Schoolgirl" design by George T. Morgan. A bust of Liberty faces left with the inscription E PLURIBUS*******UNUM****around and the date, 1879 below. Her hair is combed straight and tied with a ribbon, a headband crossing the top of her head is inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse depicts a defiant eagle facing left standing on a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
The "Schoolgirl" dollar is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful designs ever. According to Saul Teichman and Andy Lustig on the USPatterns.com website: "The 'Schoolgirl' name dates back to the April 1891 New York Coin & Stamps (D. Proskey and H.P. Smith) F. W. Doughty sale where a silver specimen and the unique white metal piece were offered. Proskey is credited with the name in the October 1911 edition of
The Numismatist
per Bowers & Merena's Rare Coin Review #110. The earliest known sale of this pattern was a silver specimen sold by Woodward privately in 1883 to T. Harrison Garrett. The first auction occurrence was in Woodward's 101st Vicksburg II sale of September 1888. It was plated in that catalog where it states that only the sale coin and the specimen in the Mint collection were known. (Note: Ed Frossard did the cataloging for that sale and may not have been aware of Woodward's earlier sale of a specimen to T. Harrison Garrett.) The Vicksburg example was bought in by Woodward and went into his 104th Stetson sale of January 1889. An example, probably the Vicksburg-Stetson specimen was sold in Frossard's June 1890 edition of Numisma. The first occurrence in copper was the example plated in the April 1892 New York Coin & Stamp Woodside sale. This coin was later sold by Woodside to Virgil Brand on 3/30/1895. It is likely that most known today in silver and copper trace their pedigree to the Woodin collection and were obtained in trade for 'returning' the two $50 gold p
