| Lot: 3656 | May 8, 2022
Sold For:
$90,000.00
1879 $20 Liberty Head Quintuple Stella, Judd-1644, Pollock-1844, Low R.7, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS.
This is the same design as the gold quintuple stella, Judd-1643, also offered in this sale. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Like many other copper pattern issues, about a dozen quintuples are known in copper, with just five pieces known in gold. A few of the copper pieces have been gold plated. Both sides of this important pattern exhibit nearly full orange mint color with slight mellowing to lighter brown. A tiny stain is evident in the field at Liberty's neck, and a small scrape in the left obverse field limits the grade, but otherwise the surfaces are exceptional.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Auction 1333
| Lot: 3222 | Aug 22, 2021
Sold For:
$78,000.00
1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1636, Pollock-1834, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS.
The obverse features the Flowing Hair portrait of Charles E. Barber, with a figure of Liberty facing left, LIBERTY on her coronet. Around the rim, punctuated by stars, *6*G*.3*S*.7*C*7*G*R*A*M*S*, with the date 1879 below. On the reverse is a large, five-pointed star with the incused inscription ONE / STELLA / 400 CENTS. Around the star are E PLURIBUS UNUM and DEO EST GLORIA, and near the rim UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FOUR DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, visible through the PCGS encapsulation. Although a unique Small Head variant of this copper pattern was struck, the Judd-1636 pieces were struck from the same dies as the gold stellas. The www.uspatterns.com website estimates that about a dozen or more pieces exist.
This delightful copper pattern makes a good accompaniment for the gold stellas also in this sale (three at this writing). The Hon. John A. Kasson's mission to introduce an international coinage (and coincidentally to create more uses for the silver flowing from the Western silver mines, through the medium of the goloid metric dollars), was responsible for the idealistic, less-than-practical, nonutilitarian, not-especially advantaged gold stella coinage and its cousins. The nominal value in U.S. currency was four dollars, and the international equivalents--more or less--were eight Austrian florins, eight Dutch florins, 20 French francs, 20 Italian lire, and 20 Spanish pesetas--but
the coins were not exactly worth any of those overseas measures, and of course those values fluctuated against one another, just as they do today.
Compounding the problem, the four dollar stella was contemplated to be produced in an awkward "metric" gold alloy--6 grams of gold, 0.3 grams of silver, and 0.7 of copper (hence the obverse legend)--that had never before been produced at the Mint. (Many numismatists have concluded that neither were the pattern gold pieces prod

1884 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-1737, Pollock-1948, R.8, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. This is the only example of Judd-1737.
From regular issue 1884 eagle dies, but struck in copper with a reeded edge. Both sides exhibit pinpoint sharpness and have evenly mellowed in beautiful sunset-orange shades. Only a few trivial flecks of carbon are noted. According to the USPatterns.com, website "... this is believed to have been deliberately struck as part of the unique copper set from the quarter to double eagle, including the rare 1884 trade dollar, presented to A.M. Smith, who authored the Mint's visitors guides." M.H. Bolender later offered Smith's collection in February 1936, where this piece was sold as lot 33, and it was last presented at public auction nearly 40 years ago at Stacks 4/66 Bolt Sale.

1882 $1 Shield Earring Silver Dollar, Judd-1703, Pollock-1905, High R.7, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS.
The Shield Earring design described at Judd-1702. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Both sides of this Gem proof have light tan color with substantial original orange mint color, with additional nuances of lilac, blue, and gold. Copper impressions of this pattern design are quite a bit rarer than pieces struck in silver. Just five specimens are confirmed by Saul Teichman including one from the Byron Reed Collection that is now in the Western Heritage Museum. A second is in the "Lemus Collection." This piece is the finest of the other three, and possibly the finest of all five known examples.
Ex: Roydon Burke Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1994), lot 1080; Superior (8/1995); Superior (3/2001).

1876 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1475, Pollock-1626, R.8, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS.
A prohibitively rare pattern from the Liberty at the Seashore series, paired with a standard Type Two Trade dollar reverse. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This gorgeous Gem has a penetrating strike, and features exquisite rose-red, pumpkin-gold, and aqua-blue toning. Tiny carbon flecks at 4:30 and 10 o'clock on the obverse rim combine to identify the present piece. Only three specimens of Judd-1475 are confirmed. According to uspatterns.com, the present piece may be the Farouk-Vickery example. It is not the Anderson-DuPont specimen, since its plate differs.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer, 5/73; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 5/99), lot 1325, which realized $21,850.

1879 $20 Metric Twenty Dollar, Judd-1644, Pollock-1844, R.6-7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS.
The design is very similar to that featured on the regular issue Liberty Double Eagle of 1879, but there are two significant differences. The obverse periphery is inscribed * 30 * G * 1.5 * S * 3.5 * C * 35 * G * R * A * M * S *, and the motto DEO EST GLORIA has been substituted for IN GOD WE TRUST within the reverse stars. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Glowing mint luster in orange, red, and pink shades backlights medium intensity, copper-brown toning. The razor sharp definition is all that one would expect for a specimen striking, as are the shimmering, reflective fields that readily reveal their proof qualities at direct angles. A rare and desirable reminder of Representative Kasson's 1879 proposal to produce Four Dollar and Twenty Dollar coins in metric gold alloy that could be used in international circulation.
From the Harold Hoogasian Collection.
