Ex: New Millennium Collection. Longacre's design features Liberty seated next to a globe with a feathered bonnet, flags behind, and a staff in her hand with a cap at the end. The regular Seated Liberty reverse die is used. Struck in copper with a plain edge. This razor-sharp near-Gem has luminous peach and ruby-red colors. A few tiny carbon flecks approach the devices but do not substantially reduce the charm of this lovely and rare specimen.

Auction 422
| Lot: 1474 | Jan 6, 2007
Sold For:
$9,775.00
1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-170a, R.8, PR64 PCGS.
113.6 grains. Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upwards, similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design for the Gobrecht dollars but with a longer, curved neck to the eagle. The date 1855 is below with slanted 5s, and the reverse is similar to the large cent. The planchet is slightly smaller than the large cent, but larger than the famous 1856 Flying Eagle cent. Struck with a plain edge in an alloy of 86% copper, 14% nickel, per the PCGS insert. Orange borders frame olive-gray centers. Well preserved and typically struck with a minor retained obverse lamination at 1 o'clock. Struck from boldly clashed dies.

Auction 420
| Lot: 1838 | Nov 30, 2006
Sold For:
$9,775.00
1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-69, Pollock-72, High R.7, PR64 PCGS.
The obverse features a Liberty Cap surrounded by a sunburst, very similar to that seen on certain Mexican coins of the time. The word LIBERTY is inscribed in the cap. A coiled palm frond encircles 1.D. on the reverse with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The design was attributed to Christian Gobrecht. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Considered a probable restrike by Judd. The fields glitter with deep reflectivity and there is a trace of blue and gold toning around the outer margins on each side.

Seemingly fully struck, and beautifully preserved. PCGS has certified just two examples of this desirable pattern in all grades.

1882 "Blind Man's Nickel," Judd-1683, Pollock-1883, R.7-8, PR64 PCGS.
Struck from the same obverse and reverse dies as the Judd-1680 above and also struck in nickel. But the edge was struck from a special grooved collar that produced five equally spaced, raised bars on the edge. The assumption being that a blind man could determine the denomination of the coin just by feeling the five raised bars on the edge. Apparently only four or five pieces are known of this rare and interesting pattern. These coins were first mentioned in the numismatic press shortly after production in a sale conducted by Captain John Haseltine on March 1, 1883. The "Blind Man's Nickel" is arguably the most famous of all pattern issues and its importance resonates today with American society's sensitivity toward visually impaired and otherwise "handicapped" persons. The surfaces have a light golden-gray color and the fields are only moderately reflective, as often seen on nickel proofs.
