1875 $10 Sailor Head Ten Dollar, Judd-1443, Pollock-1587, R.8, PR64 NGC.
Ex: Trompeter. The January 1883 issue of the
American Journal of Numismatics,
contains the often-quoted article "The Pattern Piece," in which Patterson DuBois calls patterns "things that are not appropriate, not convenient, not artistic, in short, that are not wanted." All of these reasons were legitimate for the rejection of 19th and 20th century pattern pieces, but not all of these reasons apply to all patterns. In the case of William Barber's "Sailor Head" design for the five and ten dollar gold piece, the design appears to have been rejected on technical grounds rather than the appropriateness, convenience, artistic merit, or desirability of his design. Indeed, Mint personnel thought enough of Barber's design to strike both the five and ten dollar coins in gold, rather than the bronze alloy usually seen on high denomination patterns. But it was the striking of these coins in gold that revealed the fatal flaw in William Barber's design: the central obverse and reverse designs were each in too bold relief for both motifs to fully strike up. We see it on this coin over the ear of Liberty on the obverse and on the eagle's right (facing) leg on the reverse. This softness is even more pronounced on the half eagle. Since gold is the softest metal used in the Mint for striking coinage, if two blows from the dies could not fully bring up the design elements, then there was a serious problem with die opposition with this design. It is curious to note that William Barber's son, Charles, who succeeded him at Chief Engraver had an awareness that bordered on a phobia about shallowness of design. Charles' much-publicized antipathy toward outside engravers, such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was not based solely on artistic jealousy. Charles Barber understood the concept of die opposition and he was keenly aware of its importance in singly striking a coin for commercial usage with a steam press. One has to wonder how

1915 50C Panama-Pacific Half Dollar, Judd-1960 (previously Judd-1793), Pollock-2031, R.8, PR64 NGC.
Die trial issue of the 1915 Panama-Pacific half before the S mintmark was added. Struck in gold with a reeded edge. This remarkable coin is one of only two pieces known and its illustrious pedigree goes back as far as Virgil Brand. The story of this coin is best related in the Pollock reference. Pollock had carefully examined the #1 specimen, the Farouk-Norweb coin, but the same history and mysterious circumstances apply to this piece: "...planchet file marks and traces of an undertype, indicating that the half dollar dies were impressed on a cut-down $20 gold coin, which had been filed to remove high-relief details. This piece is remarkably thick: 2.4 mm at the edge versus 2.1 mm for a regular-issue Panama-Pacific half dollar.
"The characteristics of the coin suggest that it was made clandestinely. Since the piece is overstruck instead of being made using a new planchet of normal thickness, it can be inferred that there was a desire on the part of the manufacturer that no mention of the piece be made in the bullion account books, and thus if may have been produced secretly at the Mint in the same manner as the 1913 Liberty nickel or the Class III 1804 dollar. The only other known example of the variety, listed as No. 2 in our census (this piece), is reportedly also struck over a cut down $20 gold piece."
Close examination shows fine file marks that presumably would have effaced the design of the double eagle. However, a small remnant of the undertype survives on the reverse with a faint trace of what appears to be an O and a period to its left, located between the H in HALF and U of UNITED. Fully detailed, each side shows slight evidence of off-centered doubling on the devices. The surfaces are bright and have a glowing, satiny appearance with the matte-like texture of the copper and silver coins limited on this piece to the devices. An outstanding opportunity to acquire

1915 50C Panama-Pacific Half Dollar, Judd-1961 (previously Judd-1791), Pollock-2029, R.7, PR64 NGC.
The adopted obverse and reverse of the Panama-Pacific half dollar without the S mintmark on the obverse. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This extremely rare pattern was struck before the S mintmark was added to the obverse die. Examples are known in silver, copper, and gold, and we have a complete, three-piece that has been intact for decades. This is one of fewer than four pieces that are believed extant today in silver. In this coin's last auction appearance in 1980, the cataloger noted a curious striking anomaly: "The repeated blows of the die has created a slight overlapping of the obverse wire rim at 1 o'clock." The surfaces are exceptionally bright and untoned in the centers with deeper golden-brown and blue toning around margins. The devices show pinpoint striking definition and, in addition to the above mentioned striking anomaly on the rim, there is also evidence of a second strike on the reverse on the left (facing) edge of the eagle's wing. A very important and very rare opportunity to acquire this die trial in the metal of issue.
