| Lot: 4397 | Apr 28, 2013
Sold For:

1883 $20 PR65 Cameo NGC.
A breathtakingly beautiful specimen, one that is very nearly on par with the amazing PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo that we sold in the 2004 FUN Sale for $172,500. The fragile, glassy fields and heavily frosted features have taken on an appealing orange-gold tint over the generations and are just a few of the tiniest and most inconsequential blemishes from Superb quality.
The 1883 is the first of three legendary proof-only Liberty Head Double Eagles produced during the 1880s. It is not quite as rare as the 1884 but it is decidedly rarer than the 1887. This makes it the second rarest Liberty Head Double Eagle (not including the 1861 Paquet reverse), in terms of the total number that exist in all grades.
While 92 proofs were reportedly struck, it appears that 40 or so of these went unsold and were later melted. It is more likely that approximately 50 pieces were distributed to collectors and, of these, a conservative estimate places the number of survivors at 15 to 20 coins. This figure includes three or four specimens impounded in museum collections and a few others that are mishandled in varying degrees, as with our 2003 Central States specimen .
Expect considerable bidder interest on this important and sought-after rarity among Liberty Double Eagles, made even more desirable by its show-stopping eye appeal and virtually unsurpassable quality. Census: 3 in 65, 0 finer (11/05).

1883 $20 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS.
On average only one 1883 proof double eagle appears at public auction each year. This is a widely recognized and highly respected issue that is the first of three very rare, proof-only double eagles produced during the 1880s. It is not quite as rare as the 1884 but it is decidedly rarer than the 1887. As such, it is the second rarest Liberty Head double eagle (not including the 1861 Paquet reverse), in terms of the total number that exist in all grades.
While 92 proofs were struck, it appears that 40 or so of these were never released and were later melted. It is more likely that 50 or so were made available to collectors and, of these, an estimated 15 to 20 pieces are known today. This includes three or four impounded in museum collections and a small number that are impaired as a result of poor handling. Proof strikings are characterized by the 1 in the date being about centered between the bust and border; the left base of the 1 is about over the right edge of a dentil; the right edge of the 3 is about in line with the right side of the lowest curl; the back of the eagle's neck is rough; and the fleur de lis below the beak is fragmented.
This is a magnificent coin that displays very deep, one might say "black" mirrored fields. The devices are heavily frosted and yield a strong two-toned effect against the unfathomably deep fields. A slight orange-peel effect is seen in the fields also, a common trait on proof gold from the last quarter of the 19th century. There are only the most minute post-striking defects on either side, any of which will require magnification to see. The most distinguishing feature that can be used for a pedigree identifier is a tiny alloy speck on Liberty's nose just in front of the eye. An extremely rare coin to locate in any condition, this piece is near the top of the Condition Census--it is, in fact, tied for second finest certified among Deep Cameo examples.

Sold For:
$90,000.00
An incredible collection of Hawaiian coins in gold, silver, nickel, copper, and platinum, as follows:
1881 5 Cents in Nickel AU 50 Reverse Scratches.
Medcalf-2CN.1. One of the original 200 Paris strikes on a thin, nickel planchet. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing left and the reverse has a garter, surmounted by the Hawaiian crown, enclosing the numeral 5. At the top of the crown is a cross, found on all of the original 200 pieces. The last example to appear at auction was sold in Superior's February 1999 auction for more than $25,000.
1881 5 Cents in Aluminum PR 63.
Medcalf-2CN.1. A brilliant proof, struck on a thin aluminum planchet with no cross on top of the crown. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing left and the reverse has a garter, surmounted by the Hawaiian crown, enclosing the numeral 5. This piece was struck from slightly different dies than the 200 original, nickel pieces and was not struck in 1881. Very few pieces have appeared at auction and the last specimen was sold by Superior in February, 1999 and brought $9,775.
1883 Eighth Dollar, or Hapawalu, in Silver PR 65.
Medcalf-2CS.2. A brilliant proof, struck on a silver planchet, with a reeded edge, and with "Lazy 8s" in the date. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has HAPAWALU within a wreath with EIGHTH DOL. below. This type with the lazy 8s was a later striking, probably from the original hubs, which were undated, with the different type 8s included when the date was added. It was not an official issue, but it is extremely rare and highly collectible and this type has not appeared at auction for quite some time.
1883 Eighth Dollar, or Hapawalu, Copper Pattern Trial Strike 1883 PR 65.
Medcalf-2CPC.1. A brilliant proof, struck on a copper planchet, with a reeded edge, and with normal 8s in the date. This issue was designed by Charles Barber and struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse has a he

1883-S $1 MS67 NGC.
The rarity of the 1884-S Morgan dollar in Mint State tends to overshadow the conditionally challenging status of the preceding S-mint issue in this series. Among specialists, however, the 1883-S is well respected as a difficult coin to locate in grades above the BU level of preservation. As a Superb Gem, the '83-S is of the utmost rarity and desirability, with only two MS67 examples known to the major grading services (4/03). This coin is bursting with satin luster and a modest, yet appreciable glow in the fields. The strike is as close to full as one should expect for a Morgan dollar, and the surfaces are free of distractions save for a trivial luster graze on Liberty's cheek. A few swirls of pale iridescence are seen here and there when the coin turns away from the light.
Despite a respectable original mintage of 6.2 million pieces, the 1883-S was not represented in great quantity during the Treasury releases of the early 1960s. Perhaps many of the coins that the federal government had stored after 1883 were melted under the terms of the Pittman Act. While LaVere Redfield once owned a partial bag, and other coins had dribbled into the numismatic market during the 1950s, most of those Uncirculated examples grade no finer than MS63 in today's market. Clearly, the offering of a Superb Gem is sure to excite Morgan dollar specialists from all walks of the hobby. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (4/03).
From the Morris Silverman Collection.

This deeply mirrored example shows a bit of haziness over the orange-peel texture in the fields. A few small contact marks are scattered about each side, which prevent a full Gem grade.
There have been very few 1883 Double Eagles sold in recent years. Some notable auction records include the following:
Dallas Bank Collection (Stack's/Sotheby's, 10/01), lot 91, where it realized $126,500. Cataloged as "Choice Brilliant Proof" but actually finer than the stated grade.
Ex: Harry Bass II (Bowers and Merena, 10/99), lot 1884, where it realized $89,700; Garrett Collection (Stack's, 3/76), lot 476. Graded PR64 by PCGS.
Kingswood (8/99), lot 1041, which brought $104,650. Graded PR65 by PCGS.
Kingswood (6/98), lot 741, which realized $88,550. Graded PR64 by PCGS. Same as the coin above?
This is an extremely important coin that is unquestionably one of the highlights of the Eagle Collection Sale. As a rule, this date appears for sale at the rate of around one coin per year. If you have been waiting for the right opportunity to buy a proof 1883 Double Eagle, the timing may be perfect.

A Hoard of Circulated, Uncertified 1883 50C Hawaii Half Dollars.
The pieces grade between Fine and XF. The typical example is a cleaned VF. A number of pieces are harshly cleaned; personal inspection is recommended. The 1883 half dollar or 1/2 dala is a better Hawaiian denomination, scarcer than the dime or quarter but more available than the dollar. The vast majority of the mintage of 700,000 pieces was eventually melted. Breen records a net mintage of 87,755 pieces. A hoard of this magnitude represents a lengthy, dedicated effort, and provides an excellent source of material for the researcher or reseller. (Total: 200 coins)
