Auction 1356
| Lot: 3925 | Jan 12, 2023
Sold For:
$57,600.00
1909/8 $20 MS65 PCGS.
We cannot overstate the importance of the present lot among advanced gold specialists. The 1909/8 has long enjoyed a place of honor in U.S. numismatics as the only overdate in the popular and widely collected Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. The vast majority of these coins were circulated to one degree or another. Most Uncirculated survivors in today's market grade no finer than MS63. Gems are of the utmost rarity, and there are just 19 examples certified MS65 by NGC and PCGS, combined, with a mere five finer (9/05).
This issue has a peculiar "look" for a P-mint double eagle struck in 1909. Since the obverse die was leftover from the 1908 No Motto production, the design elements on that side are not as sharply detailed as those on the 1909 perfect date examples. That said, we stress that this lovely Gem possesses ample evidence of having received a powerful strike from the dies. Both sides are fully lustrous with a rich, frosty texture that highlights the undeniably original, variegated orange-gold coloration. We are hard pressed to find more than one or two scattered bagmarks on both the obverse and the reverse, but, if we had to select a pedigree marker, we would use the tiny copper-colored alloy spot in the left (facing) fold of the upper portion of Liberty's gown. A coin that is fully deserving of a premium quality bid.
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

Auction 392
| Lot: 6566 | Nov 3, 2005
Sold For:
$48,875.00
1909-D $20 MS65 PCGS.
The 1909-D double eagle is scarce in Mint State grades, and becomes rare in full Gem and better condition. PCGS and NGC combined have certified 15 examples in MS65, and a mere 5 coins finer (9/05). Moreover, only nine Gem pieces have appeared in major auctions over the past 10 or so years, with two specimens grading higher.
The design elements on the MS65 specimen we offer here are sharply struck throughout, and the surfaces exhibit soft frosty luster that is overlaid by peach and orange-gold patina. The only marks visible on the well preserved surfaces are located on Liberty's left arm near the shoulder, and on the middle of some of the rays in the left (facing) obverse field.
The D mintmark has been clearly repunched, and the curlicues in the field to the right of the mintmark are probably the result of die maintenance. These two diagnostics should not be confused with David Bowers' 1988 discovery of a Large over Small D variety as we described in the introduction to the 1909-D issue. Population: 10 in 65, 4 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

A magnificent Gem example of this date, and certainly one of the finer specimens to survive. The devices are sharply struck throughout, and the variegated peach and yellow-gold surfaces that are imbued with tinges of light green are a delight to study. Each side is awash in luster, and exude magnificent eye appeal. This Gem would be a perfect choice for an advanced collection. Rarely are these double eagles found with such pristine surfaces, and any specialist would do well to put this one away. Identifiable by a small abrasion on Liberty's right leg above the knee and two miniscule ticks on the right breast. The combined PCGS and NGC population figures show a total of 27 pieces graded this high, and importantly, a mere six coins are graded finer; some of these coins are likely resubmissions. Over the past 10 years, only 10 MS66 specimens have appeared in major auctions, with two examples grading higher. Population: 18 in 65, 4 finer (9/05).

Lovely peach and lime hues confirm the originality of this attractively preserved and fully lustrous Gem. Crisply struck, and rare in such lofty condition. Just 52,500 pieces were struck, and those that survived government melts were indifferently stored for many years, regarded as strictly bullion. High grade examples are very desirable, given the immense popularity of the Saint-Gaudens series. Population: 4 in 65, 0 finer (5/05).

1909 MS 65 NGC.
Intricately detailed with complete feather definition on the headdress and a frostiness that be must seen to be truly appreciated. The luster on each side is shimmering and virtually uninterrupted by field marks as it rolls over the surfaces. The 1909 half eagle is far scarcer in uncirculated grades than its D-mint counterpart, although more consistently choice.
Purchased by Hugh Courteol at the October, 1978 Kagin's Sale for $1,600.

1909-D MS 65 PCGS.
As common as the '09-D is in the lower grades of mint state, it is equally (and surprisingly) scarce in gem condition. This is an enchanting example that has thick, satin-like luster that shimmers over each side. The light, reddish tinted golden surfaces show only the smallest abrasions and those are mostly located on the reverse. An important type coin in gem condition. Population: 35 in 65, none are finer (5/98).

This is an amazing Gem Mint State example, an exceptional candidate for the date or type collector. The Indian half eagles are all rare in Gem grades, despite the individual status of any given date. For instance, the 1909-D half eagle is considered one of the most common dates in the entire series issued from 1908 through 1929--and indeed, its mintage is almost exactly
100 times
that of the key-date 1909-O--and yet the population reflects a coin that is hardly considered common. This piece is sharply struck and exhibits excellent pinkish yellow-gold luster. While a few tiny marks keep it from an even higher grade, it is a wonderful representative of the unusual Indian Head design. Census: 60 in 65, 2 finer (10/06).
