Sold For:
$15,600.00
1937 25C MS64 Double Die Obverse ANACS.
Breen-4287, FS-012, Die 1. Very strong doubling is noted on the motto and digits of the date. As stated in the current
Cherrypicker's Guide,
"A very rare variety, less than 12 examples are known in any grade." We tend to concur with this, as this is only the second example (and the finest grade) we have offered at auction. The surfaces are smooth and nearly mark-free for the conservative grade and a bit of soft golden patina has gathered overall.

| Lot: 6887 | Sep 20, 2003
Sold For:

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS.
This is a splendid example of the ever-popular Three-Legged Buffalo nickel, created by an overzealous Mint workman. This variety started out in a simple clashed dies situation, until the Mint workman started removing the clash marks on the reverse die. He got a little too involved in his work, and removed certain shallow design features as well. This is the reason that the bison's front right leg is missing, and also why the animal is actually a little smaller, as evidenced by the space between the back and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This latter feature is one of the standard authentication points for this variety.
The present example, a Choice Mint State coin, has lovely gold and iridescent toning near the borders, surrounding light blue-gray color at the centers. The surfaces are fully lustrous and frosty. An exceptional coin for the grade, one that will surely delight the connoisseur.

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS.
An unusually attractive representative of this popular and extremely collectible variety, created due to overzealous die polishing at the Denver Mint. While late date Buffalo nickels are notable for their high degree of luster -- and this piece is no exception in that regard -- the peripheral rainbow toning is eye-catching. The details, or lack thereof in the case of the most notable feature of this variety, are well-defined, and the surface boasts no distracting marks to speak of. An eye-appealing example of a coin most often found in circulated grades.

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS.
Lustrous and boldly struck, if a trifle weak on the bison's head and shoulder, with a pleasing satiny sheen and even olive-gray toning across both sides. Surface marks are nonexistent. This famous variety was first publicized by coin dealer C.L. "Cowboy" Franzen in the
Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine
in 1937-1938.

FS-020.2. It is rare when an error in U.S. coinage can be traced to the individual who was responsible for creating that error. In 1937, a Mr. Young, who was then new to the Mint, and under pressure to complete a quota of coinage, took an emery stick and ground off evidence of die clashing from a pair of dies. But, in his haste, he also inadvertently ground off part of the foreleg of the bison. Only one pair of dies was so affected and Mint State examples are very scarce, although lower grade, circulated coins are always available for a price. This piece is well struck, with beautifully toned surfaces that have a pleasingly lustrous appearance and seem entirely free of contact marks. Rainbow colors near the peripheral regions, and steel-green patina over the centers, creates an utterly appealing visual display.

FS-020.2. Walter Breen (1988), writing about the genesis of the popular '37-D Three-Legged Buffalo nickel, indicated that a newly hired pressman, a Mr. Young, was under pressure to complete a quota, so instead of replacing a pair of clashed dies (the usual mint procedure), he ground off the clash marks with an emery stick, and in the process removed the bison's foreleg. The nickels struck from these dies escaped into sealed sacks among normal ones, and went unnoticed until they had already been distributed to banks and entered circulation. This helps to explain why Mint State examples are relatively scarce. The near-Gem specimen in this lot exhibits pleasing bright luster, which is unusual for this issue. (David Lange, 2000, writes that "Examples having bright and pleasing luster are quite rare.") Low intensity champagne-gold color rests over both sides, and the design features are well brought up. A few unobtrusive contact marks prevent a higher grade.

FS-020.2. A highly attractive Choice coin that shows vibrant rose-gold toning with a dash of peripheral blue. The diagnostic missing leg and stream of die dots beneath the bison confirm the variety. We note a tiny nick on the lower portion of the horn and a dusky spot below the N of CENT which will serve to identify this rarity. One of the most coveted varieties of the Buffalo nickel series and included in most date collections. Apparently a few more have turned up over the years, as this date used to be fairly difficult to find in mint condition. To nab a lovely Choice coin is still quite difficult and Gems are few and far between. Keep this in mind when formulating a bid for this desirable toned specimen. Population: 134 in 64, 43 finer (8/05).

While seen fairly frequently in most circulated grades and the lower Mint State grades, the Three-Legged Buffalo is seldom encountered in near-Gem condition. MS64 is probably the ideal grade for a special collection of Buffalo nickels, as the price trebles one grade point up, even as the certified population diminishes by a factor of 3. Lovely sunset-gold patina appears in the recesses on each side, with the luster better than the typical diffused sort, and relevant marks are conspicuously absent. PCGS has certified only 49 pieces finer (4/07).

FS-020.2. Luscious rainbow toning adorns the obverse peripheries of this high-end example, as amber and steel-blue coloration is seen over the reverse. Well struck except for the bison's head and shoulder, with carefully preserved surfaces that only show two or three minor nicks on the reverse. One of the most attractive near-Gem examples of this famous variety that we have ever seen.

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS64 PCGS.
Excessive die polishing that was meant to remove clashmarks created this, one of the most popular errors in U.S. numismatics. Mint State examples are not offered with any regularity, and when they are, advanced collectors are quick to snatch them up. With generally bold definition and no singularly mentionable blemishes, we anticipate that this near-Gem will have little trouble finding a new owner. The soft, satiny surfaces are overlaid in mottled lilac, rose, and golden-gray colored iridescence that only enhances the already impressive eye appeal. Worthy of a strong bid.
