1852 $1 AU55 ICG.
Despite a slightly lower mintage, the 1852 (1,100 pieces produced) is not as difficult to locate as the 1851, although both issues surpass all other P-mint Seated Dollars in terms of overall rarity. Like the 1851, the 1852 is most often encountered in high grade circulated or Mint State grades. The '52 may also have been produced on government account, with the Mint retaining all examples until the public resumed normal bullion deposits.
This is one of the very few Choice AU representatives that we have had the privilege to offer. Both sides retain evidence of original mint luster beneath warm champagne-gray patina, and minute striations (as struck, and a diagnostic feature of all high grade survivors) are also barely discernible under magnification. The otherwise bold impression wanes slightly in a few areas around the peripheries, and the number of small abrasions is consistent with the grade. A shallow scrape is noted in the upper right reverse field.
From The Paulsboro Collection, Part Three.

| Lot: 4043 | Apr 27, 2002
Sold For:
$18,400.00
Italy:
Vittorio Emanuele III gold 100-Lire 1905-R,
KM-39, AU58 ICG, a rarity in fine condition with a mintage of a mere 1012 coins! Few exist so nice as this beauty, with prooflike surfaces, a sharp strike, and beautiful, well-set old gold color. The small marks and hint of wear detract not at all from its considerable eye-appeal.
Auction 425
| Lot: 52229 | Jan 8, 2007
Sold For:
$16,100.00
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Centered AU55 ICG.
B-15, BB-52, R.2. The Draped Bust was well centered on this obverse die. There is a die crack in Liberty's hair as seen on most examples of this die marriage. Strongly defined throughout, the surfaces are bright and overlaid with rich layers of gray, rose, and lilac toning, and the reverse is several shades deeper in hue. An outstanding Draped Bust 1795 Dollar.

1893-S $1 AU 58 ICG.
With the exception of the enigmatic 1895, the 1893-S is the lowest mintage (100,000 pieces), most conditionally challenging issue in the long-lived Morgan dollar series. This untoned example displays a bright sheen with curious Semi-Prooflike tendencies in the fields. The highpoints are lightly rubbed, but the overall definition is bold. Small abrasions are noted on both sides, particularly the obverse.

Auction 238
| Lot: 8411 | Oct 9, 2000
Sold For:
$12,650.00
1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim AU58 ICG.
The Flat Rim variant of the 1907 High Relief double eagle is several times scarcer than its Wire Rim counterpart, and is the result of a conscious decision on the part of Mint employees to remedy the "problem" of extruded metal that created the Wire Rim coins. Sharply struck throughout, there is little friction evident on the devices, and the surfaces are satiny with a noticeable accent of green over each side. As usual, the lower reverse details are somewhat faint, an issue related to the difficulties associated with the High Relief design itself. These initial striking problems led to the modification of Saint-Gaudens original design, and thus the High Reliefs were only produced in 1907.

Auction 420
| Lot: 2751 | Nov 30, 2006

1853/2 $20 AU58 ICG.
Remnants of the underdigit are visible within the lower loop of the 3 in the date, albeit only under a loupe. As befits a Type One Double Eagle, the strike is bold throughout. There is little evident wear, and the surfaces, while minimally abraded for the grade, reveal a mentionable scrape in the upper left obverse field. Breen (1988) described the 1853/2 as "Ex. Rare." Today, a description of rare or very rare may be more appropriate as several have been discovered since his
Complete Encyclopedia
was discovered. This obverse deserves careful examination for another feature. Tiny letters JBL appear on the bust truncation of all Liberty double eagles. The first hub, used from 1850 through 1858, had these letters below the hair curl on Liberty's neck. This example has only the top half of Longacre's initials visible, the rest of the letters running off the physical coinage die.

1916-D 10C AU58 ICG.
Both sides of this key date dime exhibit pleasing cartwheel sheen, and the strike is virtually unimprovable. Although undesignated as Full Bands on the ICG insert, the bands appear to be fully split. A few faint hairlines suggest a momentary encounter with circulation, but highpoint wear is difficult to locate. Most 1916-D dimes are well worn, but here is a lovely near-Mint example.

1854-O $3 AU55 ICG.
Always popular as the only O-mint of the denomination, from a modest mintage of 24,000 pieces. The typically struck, yellow-gold surfaces retain glimpses of luster in the areas around the design elements. Wispy handling marks are found over both sides with a larger lateral abrasion under the 3 of the denomination.

1916-D 10C AU55 ICG.
The entire mintage of 264,000 pieces slipped quietly into circulation in November 1916, and it was not until the introduction of coin boards for collecting in 1934 that the issue's true rarity became apparent. This is a smooth silver-gray example with a few light blushes of golden color on the obverse, and most of the original luster intact. Ideal collector quality for this always-popular first-year key.

Auction 438
| Lot: 751 | Jun 2, 2007
Sold For:
$7,245.00
1878-CC T$1 AU58 ICG.
After a strong start in producing Trade dollars at the Carson City Mint in the early 1870s, by 1878, the year that Morgan dollars were introduced, coinage had dwindled to a puny 97,000 examples, compared to more than 2 million of the CC-mint Morgan issue. The present example shows a light gray-gold patina on each side and considerable luster, despite the grade-consistent touch of rub present. A light peppering of gray toning spots can be seen under a glass, but they are neither heavy nor distracting. An attractive, well struck near-Mint State example of the last CC-mint Trade dollar emission.
From The Guadalupe Collection, Part Two.

B-1, BB-142, R.4. The overdate variety with heavy die crumbling between the RI in AMERICA. Delicate almond-gold and gunmetal-blue graces this satiny and splendidly defined Bust dollar. Slight wear on Liberty's cheek and forehead is consistent with the grade. A worthy conquest for the specialist.

1844-C $2 1/2 AU58 ICG.
While the '44-C is known as one of the worst struck issues from the Charlotte mint, this is one of the better detailed examples with only slight softness over the highpoints. Additionally, each side is free from the planchet flaws that are often found on surviving examples and there are only small, unobtrusive handling marks present rather than the numerous nicks and scratches that are usually seen. The 1844-C is one of more difficult C-mint Quarter Eagles, ranking 8th out of the 20 issues in the series. Small portions of mint luster can still be seen around the devices and bright orange-gold color lends significant appeal as well to this attractive survivor.

Breen-6448, B. 5-E, Miller-84, R.3. A beautiful apricot-gold example of this more available Bust Right die pairing. Sharply struck and with abundant glowing luster. A tiny rim ding is on the reverse at 4 o'clock, the surfaces are otherwise very attractive for the conservatively assessed grade.

B-6, BB-241. The mostly bright, satiny surfaces retain considerable luster despite rub in the fields and across the highpoints. Little of the devices have been lost to circulation, and neither side is excessively abraded. The otherwise golden-gray patina deepens to tan-russet shades in a few areas near the reverse border.

B-6, BB-255, R.1. The sole Large 3 variety for the issue, some recutting shows at the base of the 3. Iridescent steel-gray and sea-green toning lends a fully original appearance to this barely circulated example. Well defined throughout, a slightly reflective glimmer shows in the fields just under the color. The dies are rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise, as is usual for the issue.

This 1925-S is one of the few mintmarked issues from the 1920s that actually circulated to any appreciable extent. This example has a fairly indifferent strike that leads to softness in several areas, but there are few distracting abrasions. The color is a pretty honey-gold, and considerable mint luster is still present.
