1840-D $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 1-A.
The 1840-D commands great attention whenever it makes an auction appearance. Doug Winter estimates 60 to 80 pieces are extant, nearly all within the VF to XF grade range. This coin with XF sharpness was once cleaned. Obverse and reverse bisecting die cracks confirm a late die state, while pleasing light-yellow surfaces remain softly lustrous. Mintage only 3,532 pieces.

1842-D $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 3-F.
The date was entered sharply uphill, then corrected with bold recutting visible at 184. The repunching fades in later die states, confirming this is an early die state coin. Olive-gray toning embraces sharply struck devices, with greenish-gold fields showing evidence of a deft cleaning. Mintage 4,643.

| Lot: 45727 | Feb 6, 2022
Sold For:
$3,600.00
1842 $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF.
The 1842 issue is one of the true rarities among all Liberty Head quarter eagles -- not just those from the Philadelphia Mint, but also among low-mintage issues from any of the branch mints as well. This coin was originally in a PCGS VF30 holder. It is now encapsulated as XF Details by NGC. While some light hairlines exist, eye appeal is exceptional for the assigned grade, with a combination of vibrant orange-gold and lemon-gold color, supported by a sharp strike and substantial mint luster. Survivors are exceedingly scarce in all grades. Mintage 2,823.

1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 -- Damaged -- NGC Details. XF.
The mintage was small -- only 2,900 pieces -- compared to the Large Date, Plain 4 variant, with about eight times that mintage. This is a bright and glossy, sun-gold coin. The NGC noted Damage includes an obverse rim indent at 2 o'clock and a short fissure at the lower left reverse rim. A hair-thin abrasion angles down Liberty's cheek near the ear. With only 75 to 100 pieces known, this XF Details coin will be an important addition to any Charlotte set.

1842-C $2 1/2 -- Harshly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 1.
Seldom offered in any condition, the 1842-C is the scarcest Charlotte quarter eagle in high grades and one of the rarest Charlotte gold coins overall, regardless of denomination. A single die pair produced the entire 6,729-piece mintage. Lemon-gold surfaces are essentially free of marks, with a small, oval depression noted between stars 1 and 2. This coin displays XF sharpness overall and retains substantial eye appeal despite the noted old cleaning.
Ex: Public Auction Sale (Stack's, 12/1996), lot 2285.

Auction 63177

Sold For:
$2,640.00
1841-D $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 2-D.
Struck from a rare die pair, this 1841-D is one of three varieties known despite a low Dahlonega mintage. The D mintmark squeezes in between the fraction bar and feather tip, touching each. Light orange-gold color shows only minor marks and hairlines from the noted cleaning. Slightly subdued surfaces account for the XF Details grade. This is a smoothly worn example, with much to recommend it regardless of the net grade. Mintage 4,164.

1856-C $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 1.
The 1856-C ranks third in overall rarity among the 20 Charlotte quarter eagle dates, despite having only the seventh-lowest mintage. It mimics the 1856-D quarter eagle in terms of workmanship, since both the 1856 Charlotte and Dahlonega issues are somewhat poorly made. NGC notes this Charlotte coin is cleaned, although not harshly so. Orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded with XF definition. Mintage 7,913.

1844-D $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 5-J.
This is the scarcer of two known 1844-D varieties. The mintmark is low and seemingly balanced on the fraction, with its upper-left serif distant from the talon. Glistening sun-gold surfaces are aided by a light cleaning. Both sides are arguably sharper than the XF Details designation, with no significant marks or abrasions on either side. Mintage 17,332 pieces.

1848-C $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 1.
Two varieties exist for 1848-C quarter eagles. This variety shows the date entered far left near the bust tip, slanting downhill to the right; the other exhibits varying degrees of die buckle, which is generally unpopular among collectors. The present coin's surfaces are glossy from a past cleaning, yet both sides retain pleasing orange-gold color and an above-average strike. Mintage 16,788.

1845-D $2 1/2 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 6-J.
Both the 1844-D and 1845-D quarter eagles are about equal in availability, although the 1845-D is scarcer in About Uncirculated or finer grades. This XF Details example reveals a light cleaning beneath a dusting of golden-gray patina. Sharp definition remains for the designated grade, and bright golden luster enlivens both sides. Mintage 19,460 pieces.
