1870-CC $20 XF Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
The 1870-CC is the first Double Eagle issue struck at the Carson City facility and a legendary rarity that is among the most prized issues in the entire series of Liberty Twenties. It is surpassed in overall rarity only by the ultra-rare 1861 Paquet, the 1856-O, and the business strikes of 1882 and 1886, but none of these important issues garner more attention than is generated by the appearance of a '70-CC. Only 3,789 pieces were originally produced and reliable estimates place the number of survivors in the neighborhood of 45 pieces. From the standpoint of condition rarity, the '70-CC ranks number one in the Liberty Double Eagle series, with most known examples being only Very Fine or Extremely Fine, with heavily abraded surfaces. The median grade example offered here actually displays less abrasions than the typical survivor and the strike is more than adequate for this premier CC issue. A paper thin disturbance down the portrait and a few ill-placed marks to the left of Liberty's ear lobe are really mentioned primarily for attribution. While the cleaning qualifier on the NCS insert could hardly be disputed, it fails to be a major distraction on this important Carson City rarity.
From The Barry Donnell Collection.

1871-CC $20 --Altered Surface--NCS. AU Details.
The 1871-CC is overshadowed by its legendary 1870-CC predecessor, but is significant as the second rarest Carson City double eagle. It becomes very rare as Mint State is approached, since PCGS has yet to certify an example above AU55. The present piece has only a trace of wear, but the surfaces are glossy and lackluster from a cleaning. A couple of faint marks are noted on the upper right obverse field. Well struck except for the first obverse star, and certain to be of interest to the rare gold specialist. Just 17,387 pieces were struck.

1870-CC 25C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
Specific die characteristics, especially the mintmark, should be understood by anyone who is thinking of buying an 1870-CC Quarter Dollar. Altered dates and added mintmarks, while not a major problem today, still exist. The top of C in AMERICA is straight, except for a slight indentation at the right side of that letter. The two elements of the mintmark are widely spaced with the first C lower than the second. This reverse die continued in use through early 1873.
The premier issue from the Carson City Mint, generally considered to be the most challenging in the Seated Quarter series. Only 8,340 pieces were struck, and very few are known today in any grade. Indeed, only 65 specimens have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined (some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions) and just one of these is in Mint State. The AU details specimen offered here exhibits semi-bright silvery surfaces that are moderately hairlined. A few small toning spots are noted in the upper right (facing) obverse field.

1870-CC $10 AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Variety 1-A. Simply stated, the 1870-CC Ten Dollar is the key issue among Carson City Eagles and, indeed, a profound rarity in the entire run of CC-mint gold issues. Struck from a tiny mintage of 5,908 pieces, the small number of survivors (25-30 pieces in all) is almost invariably low grade, Fine or Very Fine, topping out with a precious few AUs. Akers states that "only the famous Double Eagle of the same date surpasses the 1870-CC Eagle as the rarest of all Carson City gold coins." This lightly cleaned example exhibits abrasions are about on par with what is expected of gold issues from this historic Western Mint, however, the overall appearance is pleasant. Worth a close look and a strong bid by the CC gold specialist.

1874-CC 10C Arrows AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
The 1874-CC is the key to the Seated dime series, excluding the non-collectible 1873-CC No Arrows. Only 10,817 pieces were struck, and it seems like a higher percentage than usual of the surviving examples show some sort of post-striking problem(s). Weakly struck, the surfaces on this piece are bright from cleaning. Additionally, the surfaces show a number of small to medium-sized marks, the most prominent being a scratch that runs parallel to Liberty's leg, a mark below the TE of UNITED, a spot on the right side of the base under Liberty, and an irregular planchet flaw in the bottom portion of the wreath. In spite of the problems listed above, this piece is bound to receive numerous, strong bids from collectors who need this rare issue to complete a set.

1873-CC $1--Whizzed--NCS. AU Details.
The 1873-CC is considered to be the rarest Silver Dollar issue from the Carson City Mint, even though the mintage is nearly double that of the 1871-CC. The difference is that a number of the 2,300 pieces struck were likely melted by the mint after the "Crime of 1873" abolished the Silver Dollar in favor of the newly introduced Trade Dollar, also struck at Carson City later the same year. An even worse fate befell the 1873-S, since all 700 pieces struck were apparently returned to bullion. Among all Seated Dollars, only the extremely rare 1866 No Motto and 1870-S are more coveted by collectors than the 1873-CC. The present piece shows little evidence of circulation wear, but the cream-gray surfaces display an unnatural sheen from a consistently applied whizzing. Like all 1873-CC Seated Dollars, it utilizes the 1870-CC 'D' reverse die, with the second C in mintmark virtually touching the branch.

At first glance, this is an exceptional Mint State example with full cartwheel luster, a penetrating strike, and attractive peripheral golden-brown toning. The reverse, though, has a few clusters of pinscratches on the field near the eagle, from an attempt to remove a few green flecks. The obverse has some faint hairlines on the right obverse field. A rare Carson City issue, since its production was interrupted to resume silver dollar coinage.

Faint hairlines on the obverse account for the assigned NCS label designation. Both surfaces exhibit medium gray toning with pale gold and lilac highlights. Only 10,890 examples were minted and survivors are very rare in all grades, a claim that's attested by both the NGC and PCGS population data. We can only infer that all but a tiny percentage of these were reclaimed into bullion before the time of issue or shortly thereafter. Here's one of the landmark rarities in the Seated Liberty quarter series.

1874-CC 10C Arrows XF Details, Bent, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
An original example of one of the rarest and most in-demand of all United States Dimes. This piece has exceptional detail and pleasing medium gray color. Several indentions are seen in the right obverse field, probably the cause of the bent planchet. Someone has noticeably cleaned the coin in an attempt to remove these imperfections. Still, a worthwhile, well defined example of this elusive date.

Only five known No Arrows 1873-CC Quarters exist, but while the Arrows 1873-CC is not as formidable a rarity, it is nonetheless among the most difficult issues in the entire Seated Quarter series. Just 12,462 pieces were struck, and these are coveted in all grades, since examples survived only by chance. NGC has certified a mere 28 pieces in all grades. A hairlined lilac-gray Quarter that has an area of lighter color near the cap. LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST are fully legible with the naked eye.

An etched and rough slate-gray representative that exhibits a few moderate handling marks. LIBERTY is bold, and substantial drapery and plumage definition persists. The 1870-CC is a formidable rarity within the Seated Quarter series. 1871-CC 10C XF Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
First year of production for dimes at the Carson City mint, and a low mintage issue as well with only 20,100 pieces struck. This is an evenly worn example that is untoned over most of each side with deeper brown accents around the margins. The surfaces display numerous small abrasions and are slightly porous. Greer explains this as a shortcut the Carson City mint took. Rather than striking dimes from the standard 90% silver, 10% copper alloy, they struck them from pure Comstock silver.

1870-CC 50C AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, Reverse Scratched, NCS.
The 1870-CC is one of the most highly regarded of all Seated Half Dollar issues. This in great part is due to its absolute scarcity in all grades, but also because of its first year status from the popular Carson City mint. It is probably the most challenging Carson City Half Dollar in terms of overall rarity (although the 1878-CC is a close rival), and it is unquestionably the rarest in high grades. This modestly circulated survivor has a medium steel-gray appearance with a couple of noticeable scratches laterally on the reverse.

The devices are frosty and the fields are satiny, verging on prooflike. Cleaned long ago, and still almost entirely brilliant with some wisps and tinges of golden-brown at the borders. Virtually all design features are bold save for a touch of striking softness in the tresses of hair above Liberty's ear. The 1893-CC has one of the lowest mintages in the Morgan dollar series; a scant 350,000 examples were produced.

The first Carson City Dime, and the mintage of 20,100 pieces ensures that all survivors are very rare. This medium gray example shows evidence of a harsh cleaning over a lightly porous obverse field. The reverse is another story, however, with notable damage and porosity. Many early Carson City issued coins exhibit varying degrees of damage, so this is not uncommon. An affordable opportunity for the specialist.

The 1873-CC Dollar has an extremely low mintage of only 2,300 pieces, with only a small fraction of that number still remaining. The example that we offer here is a pleasing coin, with only minor evidence of having been cleaned, in the form of surfaces that exhibit a slightly bright appearance that was not mint-made. There are a number of small abrasions in the fields that is typical for a circulated coin from the Carson City mint. This lot represents one of the few pieces available to collectors in any grade, and it will make a worthwhile addition to any collection.
