1795 $10 9 Leaves--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
Breen-6831, B. 4-C, Taraszka-3, R.6. The 1795 9 Leaves Ten Dollar is a rare issue that has attracted growing numismatic attention over the past 45 years. Some in the numismatic community believe this variety was not discovered until 1960 when a coin appeared in the New Netherlands "Cicero" Sale. However, it was apparently a known variety to Waldo Newcomer in 1926 who paid $100 for a VF example, well over the then-current price for a 1795 13 Leaves Eagle. The earliest published reference that we could find for the Nine Leaves variety was a coin in Edgar Adams article that he published in the May 1934 issue of
Coin Collector's Journal
entitled "Early United States Gold Coins: Eagles." However, it appears the variety was more or less forgotten until the 1960 sale.
Designed by Robert Scot, Walter Breen states that 116 pieces were struck on March 30, 1796, and an unknown (but presumably small) number had also been struck on March 1, 1796 on Warrant No. 58, which had a total mintage of 1,169 pieces. Robert Hilt believes that the Nine Leaves comprised a portion (he estimated 210 pieces) struck on Warrant No. 66 of June 21, 1796. According to Neil Berman and Silvano DiGenova, as published in the 11/2005 CDN Monthly, "There are 21 examples reported certified in all grades, which is undoubtedly many of the same coins being resubmitted to the grading services. I doubt there are even the fifteen [pieces] that Dannreuther seems to think survived." As such, it is the rarest Guide Book type among all early Tens, barely surpassing the 1798/7, 7x6 Stars.
When examining this piece, a ragged V-shaped die crack is seen below the leaves and another irregular break is seen through the first T in STATES. These are apparently common to most, if not all Nine Leaves coins, and their presence, which is less obvious on this piece than most examples seen by this cataloger (JRJ), indicates an early failure of the reverse die. This is

Breen-6831, B. 4-C, Taraszka-3, R.6. Only 116 pieces are theorized by Breen to have been struck of this rare variety, all in March of 1796. The extreme rarity of the 1795 Nine Leaves can best be understood when one views the reverse of this coin. A ragged V-shaped die crack is seen below the leaves and another irregular break is seen through the first T in STATES. These are apparently common to most, if not all Nine Leaves coins, and their presence, which is less obvious on this piece than most examples seen by this cataloger, indicates early failure of the reverse die. Clusters of tiny digs and scratches are seen on the obverse, mostly at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock, although a few others are noticed to the right of the date.

1795 $10 13 Leaves--Reverse Repaired--NCS. AU Details.
B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. The reverse fields below the eagle's wings doesn't look quite right, as if the coin had been smoothed in that area. Nevertheless, Small Eagle tens are very scarce and always high on collector's want lists. This is a sharply defined example that displays especially strong details on Liberty's hair strands. A few short, shallow adjustment marks are located at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse. Generous amounts of original mint luster are still seen around the devices and the coin has an orange-gold coloration.

1795 $10 9 Leaves--Mount Removed--NCS. XF Details.
Breen-6831, B. 4-C, Taraszka-3, R.6. Only 116 pieces are believed to have been struck of this rare variety, all in March of 1796. The extreme rarity of the 1795 Nine Leaves can best be understood when one views the reverse of this coin. A ragged V-shaped die crack is seen below the leaves and another irregular break is seen through the first T in STATES. These are diagnostic to all Nine Leaves coins we have seen, and their presence indicates early failure of the reverse die.
This example is a bit softly defined in the center of each side with stronger definition at the margins. Unfortunately, some rim disturbances are seen at 3 and 9 o'clock, evidently resulting from the removal of a mount. Since the coin has been a jewelry piece for apparently a long time, the surfaces now show myriad small abrasions and are highly glossy. A couple of deeper scratches are seen behind Liberty's cap in the upper left obverse field, these serving as pedigree identifiers in the future. Still, a rare, high grade example of this important U.S. gold issue.

1795 $10 13 Leaves Unc Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Breen-6830, B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. A leaf tip touches the U in UNITED and a star point nearly touches the Y in LIBERTY, a combination that promptly attributes the Breen 1-A variety. This sharply struck example has likely encountered baking soda at one time its past, as have many rare gold coins. Nonetheless, its clean, unmarked, and radiant appearance will no doubt attract bids from knowledgeable specialists. A ripple in the field below the I in AMERICA may indicate a smoothed planchet flaw. A few faint adjustment marks, as made, are on the eagle's chest. A significant offering, since the 1795 issue represents the first year of gold coin production at the fledgling U.S. Mint. A mere 5,583 pieces were struck, some of which were the 9 Leaves reverse subtype, and many among the few hundred survivors were impaired by tooling or past jewelry usage.

Lightly circulated examples of this date are seldom seen and always in demand. This piece has evidence of light cleaning with a mildly abrasive substance, and the surfaces are also lightly marked, yet it is a most desirable example that is regularly found on collectors' want lists.

Breen-6830, BD-1, Taraszka-1, R.3. More examples of this die marriage are known than for all other 1795 varieties combined. Minor file marks are evident along the rims on each side of this piece, in an attempt to obscure minor rim bruises or other defects. There are no other imperfections evident on either side. The surfaces are brilliant with light greenish-gold color on each side. This is a pleasing example, despite the imperfections, and it deserves a good home along with other early gold pieces.

Breen-6830, B. 2-A, Taraszka-2, R.4. The tip of a palm leaf nearly touches the lower left base of the U in UNITED, and the star after the Y in LIBERTY is comparatively distant from that letter. Although minimally worn and rather well detailed, the rich golden surfaces are somewhat dulled by an abrasive cleaning that leaves wispy hairlines throughout. Contact marks are scattered across the obverse, the deepest of which is located just beneath the portrait and above the first two digits of the date.

B. 3-B, Taraszka-4, R.5. A heavy die lump between OF and AMERICA attributes the reverse, while the obverse is identified by a series of tiny die lumps below the tip of the bust. A better variety that is seen much less often than the Breen 1-A die pairing. A lightly hairlined example of this rare and historic issue. A couple of crisscrossing adjustment marks are seen at the center of the reverse. The eagle's wings have sharply detailed plumage and the upper obverse has a light die crack from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock. From the first year of the denomination, and also from the inaugural year of gold coinage at the Philadelphia mint.

1795 $10 13 Leaves AU Details, Mount Removed, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
B. 3-B, Taraszka-4, R.5. Two glances are all that is required to attribute this variety, the scarcest of the 13 Leaves Eagles. Note the position of the top left star touching the cap, then note the large die chip between OF and AMERICA. The surfaces have pinkish yellow gold and have been hairlined from the treatment of this coin. There is little if any evidence of the mounting that was removed from this example.

1870-CC $10 AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Variety 1-A. Simply stated, the 1870-CC Ten Dollar is the key issue among Carson City Eagles and, indeed, a profound rarity in the entire run of CC-mint gold issues. Struck from a tiny mintage of 5,908 pieces, the small number of survivors (25-30 pieces in all) is almost invariably low grade, Fine or Very Fine, topping out with a precious few AUs. Akers states that "only the famous Double Eagle of the same date surpasses the 1870-CC Eagle as the rarest of all Carson City gold coins." This lightly cleaned example exhibits abrasions are about on par with what is expected of gold issues from this historic Western Mint, however, the overall appearance is pleasant. Worth a close look and a strong bid by the CC gold specialist.

B. 1-A, Taraszka-9, R.4. A very rare early Ten that is seldom offered by anyone in any grade. Breen estimates that perhaps only 18-20 pieces are known out of the original mintage of 900 coins. Of that tiny number of survivors, three are known to be mutilated, 9-12 are in Mint State, and the remainder are in the VF to AU grade range. Although both sides have been noticeably cleaned and are slightly porous as a result, this coin appears well balanced and is an excellent value for the early gold specialist.

1920-S $10 AU50 Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
The 1920-S is one of the premier rarities in the Indian Eagle series. It is rare in all grades, although most survivors are in Mint State. Breen believed the '20-S to be even rarer than the 1930-S and the 1933. This piece is typically struck for the issue. A few noticeable abrasions reside on Liberty's face, in the left obverse field, and on the eagle's shoulder. There are no obvious signs of an improper cleaning.

Breen-6834, B. 2-C, Taraszka-12, R.4. Both sides exhibit a few small abrasions at the centers and a small "X" on Liberty's throat, leading to the NCS designation for this example. It has strong luster with bright greenish-yellow-gold color. Slight wear is visible on the highpoints. This is a first year example of the Heraldic Eagle design that will certainly fit the needs of the more budget-minded collector.

Breen-6842, B. 1-A, Taraszka-23, R.4. The obverse shows some evidence of cleaning in the fields and on the devices, but traces of prooflike mirror fields remain in the protected areas in the stars and lettering. A few minor scrapes and scratches are found as well, and the left obverse rim is a little weak. The strike is adequate for the date, with ample definition on Liberty's curls and the eagle. Perhaps more affordable for the moderate problem than a fully mint state coin.

Breen-6830, B. 4-B, Taraszka-5, R.5. A large die lump (as made) between OF and AMERICA identifies this rarely seen die marriage. Breen 1-A is the usually encountered 13 Leaves variety. Scattered pinprick marks and a granular surface suggest past use as jewelry, however, the only rim blemish is a minor bruise on the reverse at 8 o'clock. An affordable piece for the die variety specialist; several years may pass before another Taraszka-5 appears at auction.
