1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters. B-6, BB-64, R.8--Damaged--NCS. XF Details.
Small, wide date, evenly spaced; Berry under right foot of A in STATES. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. The obverse of this very rare coin has been damaged with several radial scratches which have been partially smoothed out and the obverse buffed down. A similar scratch has been smoothed on the reverse and this extends from the right wing of the eagle down his chest and out the rim near the U. A numismatic tragedy as this is one of only three specimens known of this variety. All three examples of this die variety show the same dramatic die crack on the reverse, where the right quarter of the coin is very sharply struck, while the left three quarters is much weaker in strike. The reverse die had split into two separate pieces with the right side being dramatically lower (hence the sharper strike), than the left side. Obviously, not many were coined and the reverse die was retired. Of all known die cracks in the Bust Dollar series, this may be the most dramatic and severe known, as no others show as much differentiation between the planes of the surface level of the fields. Several 1796 dies show rather dramatic failure (all coin series) and the die steel obtained for 1796 was apparently somewhat inferior. It is quite possible that a perfect die example exists, awaiting discovery. No evidence is seen as to why the die would crack in such a dramatic fashion. Perhaps the reverse die was not perfectly aligned with the obverse, which put all the striking pressure on the left side of the reverse, causing the die to crack into two separate planes, weakening the left side of the reverse while the right side of the reverse compensated by moving down to a lower plane.
While the surfaces are clearly damaged, particularly the obverse, one must be willing to accept such problem coins if examples of these rare varieties are to be obtained. In some cases, the only surviving example is damaged as

1797 50C --Bent, Damaged--NCS. VG Details.
O-101a, High R.4. The Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar, bearing the dates 1796 and 1797, is comprised of four varieties. The 1796 with 15 stars is Overton 101, and that with 16 stars is Overton 102. A 1797 obverse die was paired with the reverse used on the 1796 issues, and is designated Overton 101. Over time, this reverse developed myriad die cracks (Overton 101a). A new reverse die, identified by slight differences in the alignment of the wreath relative to the peripheral lettering, was then paired with the 1797 obverse (Overton 102).
The Overton 101a example in this lot displays the typically-seen die cracks (including the obverse crack that travels from the rim through star 2 to Liberty's curl), except where they are worn away. The crack connecting the bottoms of ST in STATES, another extending from the lower upright of the first T through a leaf to the eagle's neck, and one traveling from the rim just right of the last S in STATES to two leaves below, are all visible. Both sides display semi-bright silver-gray surfaces that show slighter darker color in some of the protected areas. Uneven wear results from the coin having been slightly bent. Actually, the design elements exhibit fairly strong detail on Liberty's upper facial features, on the flowing ribbon and hair curls beneath, on the 17_7 of the date, on the stars along the left border, and on the ERTY of LIBERTY. On the reverse, most of the eagle shows, except for its right (left facing) wing, as does the bowknot and fraction below, and the letters UNIT, all of STATES, and the letters AME. A few small punches are scattered about, especially on the obverse, and a noticeable scratch extends from the rim above star 1 through the lower curls. A few thin, relatively unobtrusive pinscratches are also noted on each side.
That this piece of Americana has its share of problems is undeniable. Regardless, 1796-1797 halves in all grades, and with or without impairments, have se

1793 Chain 1C AMERI. VF Details NCS. VG8 EAC.
S-1, Die State II, R.4. Previously certified VG8 by ANACS. First design for the large cent and the only variety with the famous AMERI. reverse, making it a very popular coin for copper specialists and for general U.S. type collectors alike. This is a pleasing coin for the grade that shows only a few pinscratches on the obverse, one traversing the center of that side, and all nicely blended with the color so that they are nearly invisible. There is also a small rim bump below the 3 in the date. The reverse is much finer, as always, with only a few small abrasions and bumps. There are only a few surviving Chain AMERI cents without problems. The current rarity ratings suggest that between 150 and 200 of these Sheldon-1 cents survive today. Breen speculates that some 6,350 pieces were struck; most are found in lower grades and with more problems than seen here. All discussions of "mintage figures" for the early cents through 1814 are taken from Walter Breen's
Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents
that was edited by this cataloger and published in 2000. Breen based all of his mintages on a combination of current rarity ratings with an estimated survival rate, in the range of 3% for these earliest years. Not all early copper specialists subscribe to these figures. This is a more than acceptable coin with nice detail. NCS Corroded.

1796 25C VG8 Details, Tooled, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
High 6, B-2, R.3. An original piece that shows uneven wear over the highpoints and smooth, superficially blemished fields. A perfectly centered example of the country's first Quarter Dollar, and the only year of issue for this particular design type. Evidence of a repair is seen on the left side of the reverse. Flat, gunmetal-gray patina covers most of each side with deeper olive color in the protected areas. Weakly struck on the breast of the eagle and on the head, as always.
From The Paulsboro Collection, Part Three.

O-101, R.4. A balanced light gray example with just a trace of orange-gold toning along the left side of the reverse. The severity of the cleaning is not at all obtrusive and most any early type or Half Dollar collector would be thrilled to include this scarcer first year issue in their collection.

JR-10, R.6. The discovery specimen for this rare die marriage surfaced in a dealer's stock in Dayton, Ohio in 1973. The John Reich Society reports that the finest known example of JR-10 grades Fine 15. Although heavily worn, excellent detail remains on this smooth surfaced example. True, there is a noticeable intrusion across the eagle's neck, but the remainder of the coin is virtually unabraded. Both sides are richly toned in steel-gray shades that deepen a little on the reverse. A significant bidding opportunity for the Capped Bust Dime specialist.

O-101, High R.3. The date, the stars, and LIBERTY have been carefully outlined to make the piece appear sharper than it actually is. The steel-gray obverse is faintly granular, the olive and cream-gray reverse is somewhat glossy, and both sides have wispy pinscratches that may have been old graffiti. The reverse has a rim ding at 6 o'clock.
