1878-S 50C -- Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. AU Details. WB-101, Die Pair 1.
(PCGS# 6360)
Auction 1208
| Lot: 5585 | Aug 9, 2014
Sold For:
$58,750.00
1878-S 50C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
A legendary rarity in the Seated half series. The mintage was a mere 12,000 pieces, all struck before the mint's equipment was pressed into full time service producing Morgan dollars. As a result, surviving examples of the half dollars are very rare. According to our records, only 33 specimens have been offered in public sales during the past 30 some years. This specimen displays sharp design detail. The surfaces are bright and finely hairlined, and are retoning aqua marine in isolated areas, particularly along the borders. We also note a horizontal pinscratch across Liberty's midsection between her two arms.

Lightly circulated examples of this date are seldom seen and always in demand. This piece has evidence of light cleaning with a mildly abrasive substance, and the surfaces are also lightly marked, yet it is a most desirable example that is regularly found on collectors' want lists.

1920-S $10 AU50 Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
The 1920-S is one of the premier rarities in the Indian Eagle series. It is rare in all grades, although most survivors are in Mint State. Breen believed the '20-S to be even rarer than the 1930-S and the 1933. This piece is typically struck for the issue. A few noticeable abrasions reside on Liberty's face, in the left obverse field, and on the eagle's shoulder. There are no obvious signs of an improper cleaning.

Ample luster remains on this lightly circulated key date specimen. Close examination reveals some light rim filing, perhaps an attempt to remove a ding or two. Attractive and affordable as a higher grade example.

1855-S 50C Arrows AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Little actual wear is present on this elusive S-mint Half Dollar and the both sides display substandard luster from the cleaning beneath swirling layers of steel-violet toning. Far scarcer as such than even its small mintage of 129,950 would suggest.

1859-S $10 --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
The low-mintage (7,000 pieces) 1859-S is best known for its condition rarity, but is a most difficult issue in terms of absolute rarity as well. The specimen offered here is well struck in the centers, although the normal softness is noticed on the stars, and only a few, very minor abrasions can be found. The signs of cleaning are the fly in the ointment as the surface are quite dull as a result. Still, a desirable example.

1893-S $1--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details.
Pewter gray toning with hints of pale gold and lilac iridescence. Traces of satiny luster can be seen in the protected areas around the stars, letters, and numerals. The presence of hairlines on both surfaces accounts for the designation on the NCS label. The 1893-S is a perennial favorite with Morgan dollar specialists, largely because it has the 2nd lowest mintage in the series after the 1895; only 100,000 1893-S dollars were produced, and it seems probable that a large portion of these were never issued, but rather melted pursuant to the provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918, which resulted in 270,232,722 silver dollars of various dates and mints being reclaimed into bullion.

1860-S $3 AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Brilliant surfaces. The devices are satiny and the fields have a texture intermediate between satiny and prooflike. A touch of striking softness is noted on the highpoints of the designs, but both the date and mintmark are bold. A mere 7,000 examples were minted and survivors are seldom available in grades above XF.

Good detail remains as do a few small marks overall. The obverse exhibits some light hairlining as a result of the stated cleaning. Still, the '25-S is an important rarity in the Saint-Gaudens' series.

1866-S $10 No Motto--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details.
The transitional year 1866-S No Motto is one of the rarest issues in the entire series of Coronet eagles, and only the 1875 and 1864-S are seen with less frequency. While rare in all grades, it is prohibitively rare in XF condition or better. This piece has subtle antique-golden coloration and is typically abraded for the issue, without any individually mentionable marks or distractions.

1855-S 50C Arrows--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
The initial S-mint issue, since the San Francisco Mint concentrated on the production of high denomination gold during its inaugural year of coinage. The 1855-S is also significant as the only Arrows, No Motto issue from that facility. The production of nearly 130,000 pieces is not especially low, but is deceptive, since few pieces were set aside. This bold but somewhat granular example has tan-gray color. The left obverse is thickly hairlined and has been smoothed.

1857-S $3 AU Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS.
Both sides of this example are lightly abraded as one would expect. These coins entered circulation on the West coast after they were produced, and thus examples quickly became worn. Those that did survive with little wear still received numerous surface marks. This is a lightly cleaned example, and it now appears prooflike, yet it retains excellent eye appeal.
