1652 Willow Tree Shilling--Damaged--NCS. Good Details.
62.8 grains. Noe 3-C, Cr. 3-F & G, High R.6. When dealing with Willow Tree coinage, one thing to remember is the method of manufacture of these pieces. These coins were struck on a rocker press, which means that bends are inherent in the production process. It is not known if NCS was referring to the bend in this coin as "damage" or if they were actually referring to several shallow scratches on each side.
We can do no better than to quote the catalog description of this coin from the Hain Family Collection when it was sold in 2002:
"Very pale gray in the centers, deeper in places around the peripheries. On the obverse, the tree trunk and its roots show. In the legend, the letters MAASETS are legible. On the reverse, the date is indistinct, X in the denomination is clear, and the peripheral legend WENDNDOM shows. Some light scratches are noted. The exact rarity rating of N.3-C is unsettled. The writer [Michael Hodder] has seen 10 to 12 of these and suspects there may be as many as 20. The variety is not quite as rare as N.1-A but these two are very close in terms of availability."
It seems indisputable from examination of the coins themselves that rocker dies were used on Willow Tree coinage. Which type is uncertain. According to Louis Jordan, it may have been a hand-cranked gear press or some version of a sway press. " ... it is probably the Massachusetts Mint used gear technology rather than the more primitive lever technology of the sway press." These early American coins are representative of not only the beginnings of coinage in North America, but they also represent an interesting transition period in the use of mint technology.
Ex: Stearns Collection (Mayflower Coin Auctions, 12/66), lot 7; Hain Family Collection (Stack's, 1/02), lot 8, where it brought $16,100.

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves. B-20, BB-16, R.8--Holed, Damaged--NCS. VF Details.
Small perfect curl touches inner point of star 1; Die scratch from denticle left of A2. This specimen has a rather clean hole imparted through the BE of LIBERTY on the obverse and neatly placed in the field between the ribbons on the reverse. The surfaces are peppered with nicks consistent with a coin worn as jewelry, and it is likely that this coin was suspended from a necklace for some time. Nevertheless, the color is an attractive light olive-gray and is fairly well struck. There are some faint initials in the left and right obverse fields, perhaps relating to the early days when this coin served as a treasured necklace. At a glance a specialist will recognize the obverse die, with the delicate curls on Liberty and artistic rendering of her profile. This obverse die was paired with a three leaves reverse, a variety which is fairly common. However, the obverse die was also paired with this reverse, which was used on the B-8, BB-15 variety which is extremely rare, and the B-20, BB-17 variety which remains unique.
Here is an opportunity to purchase one of the great rarities of the Bust dollar series. To date, three examples of this die pairing have been reported. This die combination was first widely published when an example appeared in Lester Merkin's February 1972 sale, lot 299, that coin was purchased by collector and has not reappeared at auction since that time. That particular coin was graded as Fine-15 in the Bowers Borckardt
Encyclopedia
and is attractive for the grade. This specimen is the second example of this variety to be discovered, and was auctioned by Bowers and Merena in 1997. Jules Reiver purchased this coin privately from Early Dollar specialist John Haugh in 1998. A third example was discovered and auctioned in March of 2000 by Bowers and Merena, but this coin also has initials in the fields. A great rarity and a desirable coin despite some problems, and clearly wait

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURENCY, Pewter--Genuine--NCS.
Breen-1089, Crosby Pl. VIII, 15, Newman 1-C. This slightly wavy steel-gray piece has the sharpness of Very Good in selected areas, although the sundial and portions of peripheral elements are only Fair. Whizzed in its past, and minutely grainy, with moderate charcoal toning at the borders. An obtainable example of this famous, historically important issue. Traditionally referred to as a "dollar" because of its diameter, nearly identical to the Spanish pillar dollars then in circulation. Listed on page 81 of the 2007
Guide Book.

1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter--Genuine--NCS.
Crosby Pl. VIII, Newman 2-C, Breen-1092, R.3. Where portions of the designs are present, the sharpness is VF to XF. However, as is the case with many Continental dollars, this piece has extensive environmental damage. About 20% of the design is apparent. It is speculative to assess a net grade to this piece, so we suggest personal inspection. Listed on page 81 of the 2007
Guide Book.

1796 25C Good 4 Details, Plugged, NCS.
Low 6, Browning-1, R.6. The Low 6 variety is much rarer than the High 6 variety, with only an estimated 22-25 pieces known. This is a plugged example that shows a buckled planchet. There are a few minor digs and pinscratches on each side, and the reverse peripheries are heavily worn. A rare opportunity for the specialist to acquire this seldom seen variety.

1831 25C Large Letters. B-7, R.6--Reverse Scratched--NCS. Good Details. Usual Die State.
Tall double-peaked 1s. Curve based 2, large letters, 25 centered. The reverse has some scratches above the left wing which are fairly minor considering the grade of this coin. Light silver on the devices which are offset by darker gray in the fields. Portions of the upper reverse lettering are worn into the rim. A very rare and desirable example of this coveted variety which remains a high Rarity 6. Only 9 coins were reported in the most recent
John Reich Journal
Quarter survey in July 2003 to represent this variety. A considerable rarity which is seldom offered in any grade.
Ex: Rungren (2/1994).
