1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 15.

Auction 366
| Lot: 10428 | Feb 26, 2005
Sold For:
$4,312.50
1893-S $1 Fine 12 ANACS.
A slate-gray and gunmetal-blue representative of this coveted series key. The devices show wear consistent with the grade, yet the eagle's wings still possess much of their initial plumage definition. Thousands of Morgan dollar collectors dream about owning an 1893-S "someday," but the opportunity is in the present.

Auction 430

Auction 442
| Lot: 1607 | Jul 13, 2007
Sold For:
$3,737.50
1893-S $1 Fine 12 ANACS.
A heavily, evenly worn example of this key Morgan dollar. Light in color overall, there is a deeper accent of gray around the peripheries and within the recesses of the design. The only mentionable mark is a shallow planchet flake out of the cheek of Liberty below the eye.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 416
| Lot: 5416 | Sep 16, 2006
Sold For:
$3,737.50
1893-S $1 Fine 12 ANACS.
A pleasing middle circulated grade example with smooth pewter-gray surfaces and lighter tan color on the devices. The surfaces are pleasing and exhibit only the usually encountered light circulation marks. Like most key-date issues in all different series, demand for this date has risen dramatically in the past couple years.

Auction 408
| Lot: 2615 | Jun 3, 2006
Sold For:
$3,737.50
1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 15.
A moderately worn example that has since nicely toned in steel-gray and golden hues. Only the coin's somewhat muted appearance clues the viewer of an old cleaning.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 376
| Lot: 6907 | Jun 3, 2005
Sold For:
$3,737.50
1893-S $1--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 12.
Mauve-gray surfaces reveal numerous moderate punch marks at Liberty's nose and eye.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 360
| Lot: 11654 | Jan 15, 2005
Sold For:
$3,467.25
1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. Fine 12 Details.
Moderate dove-gray surfaces show only the extensive circulation wear and numerous small abrasions expected of the grade. The too-bright surfaces betray an old cleaning, but the effect is not overly distracting. The diagnostic die markers of a genuine piece are clearly visible in LIBERTY, despite the wear.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 416
| Lot: 5415 | Sep 16, 2006
Sold For:
$3,450.00
1893-S $1--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 12.
A bright and untoned key date Dollar that has forgivable scratches on Liberty's nose and jaw. Traces of luster persist within the eagle's lower wing feathers. The lowest mintage business strike Morgan Dollar, aside from the 1895 for which no commercial strikes are known to exist.

Sold For:
$2,990.00
1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. Fine 12 Details.
Dusky medium gray patination conceals some fine hairlines that are only visible under high magnification. Both sides reveal no mentionable contact marks, and exhibit nice definition on the design features. This is a pleasing key-date representative that will fit comfortably into a mid-grade Morgan dollar collection, despite the light, nearly imperceptible cleaning.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 438
| Lot: 1587 | Jun 2, 2007
Sold For:
$2,990.00
1893-S $1--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 12.
If the coin is held just right against the light, a cluster of hairlines emerges on Liberty's cheek. The centers also have a couple of wispy pinscratches and contact marks. However, traces of mint luster are evident within the recesses of the devices, and the obverse border has attractive golden-brown color.

| Lot: 1572 | Oct 25, 2006
Sold For:
$2,760.00
1893-S $1--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine12.
The surfaces are unnaturally bright, and reveal a few areas of reddish-brown color. Light abrasions are scattered about, none of which are individually serious, and hairlines can be observed on the obverse as the coin is tilted under a light source. Light rim damage is seen at 12 o'clock on the obverse, and is somewhat more evident at 6 o'clock on the reverse. An eternally popular key date Morgan dollar in all states of preservation.
From The Paulsboro Collection, Part Two.

Light silver-gray color on both sides. This key-date has a few marks consistent with the grade, but none are serious. Indeed, this piece is rather attractive for the grade, and will fit nicely into a circulated Morgan dollar collection.

Sold For:
$2,530.00
1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. Fine 12 Details.

Auction 407
| Lot: 2921 | Jul 8, 2006
Sold For:
$2,530.00
1893-S $1--Rims Filed--ANACS. Fine 12 Details.
The rims on both sides have been filed, in some spots heavily so to diminish the appearance of rim bumps or bruises. Deep charcoal and gray-brown surfaces with lighter gray color on the devices. The diagnostics of authentic '93-S dollars are clearly visible.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 404
| Lot: 3636 | Apr 29, 2006
Sold For:
$2,530.00
1893-S $1--Damaged--ANACS. Fine 12 Details.
Scattered moderate marks on the portrait and a brief concealed abrasion above the right (facing) wing constitute the "damage", which may be an overly harsh assessment of this circulated key date dollar. Apricot-gray toning embraces the slightly bright surfaces.
(PCGS# 7226)
Auction 422
| Lot: 7282 | Jan 6, 2007
Sold For:
$2,300.00
1893-S $1--Tooled-Whizzed--ANACS. XF Details, Net Fine 12. It would appear that this coin was once lightly circulated as evidenced by several noticeable small marks or digs on the face and in the obverse fields. Someone chose to mechanically smooth out those marks, then camouflage the repair work by whizzing the whole surface and letting it retone. Knowing these
caveats,
however, the end result is still a decent looking example of this extremely rare date. If the average coin in your Morgan dollar collection is VF-AU and you don't want to pay the normal tab for a matching '93-S, this might be an alternative worth considering.
Ex: 65th Anniversary Sale (Stack's 10/00), lot 1399.

| Lot: 1233 | Apr 28, 2002
Sold For:
$1,207.50
1893-S $1--Cleaned--ANACS. VF Details, Net Fine 12. Both sides of this piece were cleaned in an apparent effort to lighten the rich lilac-gray toning that dominates the outward appearance. With ample remaining definition and no sizeable circulation marks, this is, nevertheless, a respectable representative of this key S-mint issue.
