(1616) SHILNG Sommer Islands Shilling, Small Sail AG3 PCGS. Breen-2, BMA Type I, W-11460, R.5.
The Sommer Islands coinage was probably struck in England circa 1616 for use in the Bermuda colony. The coins were struck on brass planchets and lightly silvered. Four denominations are known: Twopence, threepence, sixpence, and shillings. This is one of the rare shillings -- the Small Sail variety, although it takes patience and a strong loupe to identify enough surviving motif characteristics on the rough, About Good surfaces. All Sommer Islands pieces suffer environmental effects to one extent or another, dug from the tropical sand and often subjected to marine factors. On this 30 mm coin, granular walnut-brown surfaces retain faint vestiges of silvering. The legs of the obverse hog motif are visible and enough reverse detail remains to confirm the Small Sails ship reverse. As the earliest "New World" coinage with a fascinating history, these "hogge money" pieces are of great interest to Colonial specialists. PCGS Population: 2 in 3, 10 finer (4/25).

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling AG3 PCGS.
Noe-14, Crosby 7-B, R.4. 65.90 grains. Uneven wear due to a central bend causes the sharpness of Fine throughout much of the design, while most of the tree is worn smooth, as is the reverse beneath the denomination. Light hairlines suggest an ancient cleaning. Apparently late dies for Noe-14, with a small break present on the base of the obverse S at 4 o'clock, and another minor break that forms a lower serif on the D in ENGLAND. Listed on page 37 of the 2007
Guide Book.

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet AG3 Scratched, Clipped Uncertified.
Noe-13. 49.4 grains. A rarely seen variety, Noe had only seen one example and that was in an institution. This and Noe-14 are the so-called "Nested Bowls" varieties because of the configuration of the branches. When encountered, these varieties are heavily worn and usually damaged or pierced. They are unknown with full inscriptions and Breen believes they may be circulating counterfeits from the 1670s. The surfaces are light gray and there is a rim-to-rim scratch down the right side of the obverse. Listed on page 18 of the 2002
Guide Book.

1652 3PENCE Pine Tree Threepence--Damaged--NCS. AG Details.
Noe-36, Crosby 2a-B, R.4. 16.1 grains. The obverse is well worn, but the shape of the stand of the T in MASATHVSETS confirms Noe-36 instead of Noe-37. The 'damage' consists of a straight clip from 11:30 to 1 o'clock relative to the reverse; this clip could well be mint-made since the stated weight of 16.1 grains is greater than two of the four Hain Family Noe-36 pieces. The reverse is considerably sharper than the obverse, although wear is uneven due to the usual wavy flan. Listed on page 37 of the 2006
Guide Book.
