Critical microscopic examination of this amazing jewel fails to reveal even the slightest imperfection with the sole exception of an almost imperceptible hairline in the left obverse field, the only reason we can find to keep this from a Perfect Proof-70 grade. One of just 205 coins struck, this is the second highest mintage Proof Quarter Eagle issue in the entire Liberty series. Only the 1901 issue had a higher production of 223 pieces. This is a fully struck example with extraordinary cameo contrast, so highly desired today. At the time these coins were struck; however, Mint personnel did not consider cameo contrast to be a good thing, and they must have been particularly displeased with this example. At the close of the 19th century, technology of the time did not permit the crevices in the die to be polished. Thus it was the original die finish that created the cameo effect that is so dearly loved today. Coins struck from new Proof dies exhibited a full complement of cameo contrast. As additional coins were struck, the actual minting process served as an agent to polish the recesses of the dies, thus reducing the amount of contrast until, eventually, coins did not retain any contrast whatsoever. It is not inconceivable that this example was the very first 1900 Proof Quarter Eagle struck, or at least it was produced quite close to the beginning of production.
This is a captivating coin that will stop any collector in their tracks upon initial examination. Although we have handled a few other nearly perfect examples of this issue, we do not recall any with contrast equal to this. The devices are bright yellow with full mint brilliance while the fields seem to have never-ending depth. The surfaces of that watery or wavy appearance of true Proof gold coins. Every design element on both sides is absolutely fully defined. Liberty's hair is complete in every respect, with each and every strand perfectly defined. Similarly, the eagle's feathers are

"Perfection" is not a word that is used often when describing coins that are 105 years old. But we believe this piece comes as close to technical perfection as any proof Quarter Eagle coin we have recently seen. It is nothing short of phenomenal. Deep, watery proof mirrors in the fields, thickly frosted devices, hairline-free and defect-free. Words simply fail to convey the visual impression this coin makes when it is viewed in-person.
As an issue, the 1900 is relatively available. The mintage was 205 pieces, and it has been estimated that perhaps as many as 130 examples are still extant today. It would be very difficult to improve on this coin. Population: 5 in 68, 3 finer (2/05).

This is a stunning beauty with brilliant and highly lustrous yellow-gold devices that are surrounded by impeccable mirrored fields. Of the 205 proofs struck of this issue, no more than 100 are believed to be extant today in all grades. This example is tied with four others for the finest proof this date PCGS has ever certified (4/07), and it is exceeded by just five PR68 examples that that service has graded for the entire Liberty quarter eagle series. For the connoisseur of proof gold coinage, this is a piece to be appreciated. Auction appearances of proof 1900 quarter eagles are numerous, and we have no provenance available for this coin. However, we believe that it is one of the finest existing examples, even among those finer pieces certified by NGC. Population: 5 in 67 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (4/07).

This is a special coin that will undoubtedly end up in a very special type set. This turn-of-the-century date will always be popular with collectors. And this particular coin has all the attributes necessary for the finest type coin from this important year. The devices are heavily frosted and contrast sharply against the deeply mirrored fields. Almost completely brilliant, only the slightest dab of golden colored patina is seen on either side. Population: 2 in 67, none are finer (11/05).

This coin is very bright with abundant frost on the devices, particularly so on Liberty's face. The fields delight the viewer with their mirror quality and retain all the freshness imparted by the dies. These proofs were struck very carefully so that even the tiniest recesses of the dies were brought out by each coin, hence Liberty's hair curls are piled high, the central star points crisp and sharp, and the eagle's feathers fully present. Such exceptional quality represents a high water mark for American coining techniques, and coupled with the extraordinary Ultra Cameo contrast and Superb Gem Proof grade, this is a coin which any collector will always desire. Remarkably, from the paltry mintage of 205 quarter eagle proofs struck in 1900, a fair number show the Ultra Cameo contrast. NGC in their Census reports that nine examples have been graded this high, with an additional seven coins seen in finer grades. This particular coin is identifiable by a lint mark which extends down from the inside lower point of star eleven to the rim below and by a very minor chatter mark extending up from the first inside star point toward Liberty's chin. On the die diagnostics we note a small engravers line which extends below the center upright of the T in LIBERTY toward Liberty's ear. Certainly an impressive and exciting coin for the numismatist to aspire to own.

The 1900 proof Quarter Eagle has a mintage of 205 pieces, the second largest production figure for the series, and it has been estimated that up to 130 pieces remain of this popular turn-of-the-century date. As if there was any doubt on this Superb specimen, a die file mark that extends down from the base of the T in LIBERTY confirms the proof status. Both sides display heavily frosted devices that lend a stark white-on-black effect and generate exceptional eye appeal. Population: 4 in 67 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (11/04).
