This coin is the single finest known example of any proof Liberty double eagle of any date certified at either NGC or PCGS. Besides its phenomenal condition, this is an exceedingly rare date, with a total mintage of 1,390 business strikes and 52 proofs. Q. David Bowers'
A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins
notes that this date "has long been recognized as a rarity in any grade." The history of bimetallism (or the lack thereof) and its relationship to the present coin is worth exploration. In 1837 the U.S. government pegged the ratio of gold to silver at 16 to 1. During the War Between the States (1861-1865), little silver was mined, and there were no major discoveries of the metal. An immediate consequence of the aftermath of the Civil War had to do with the circulation of $450 million in "greenback" notes that were unbacked by gold or silver reserves. Farmers and other debtors supported the issuance of increased numbers of greenbacks, which would spur inflation and lessen in absolute terms their ultimate debt repayments. Farmers supported inflation because they incurred debts in the spring and discharged them in the fall. Lenders and the wealthy, on the other hand, wanted to eliminate the circulating greenbacks and to return to a gold-backed currency, which would reduce inflation and ensure that they were paid, or repaid, in "hard currency." In 1873, silver was demonetized and the nation adopted the gold standard, leading the farmers and debtors to band together with Western silver-mining interests to rally against what they termed the "Crime of '73." By 1877 debate raged regarding "Free Silver," with advocates, generally Western silver miners and the aforementioned debtors, endorsing the unlimited coinage of silver dollars, while Easterners and creditors generally preferred gold's stability. The "Free Silver" forces won a partial victory with the 1878 passage of the "fatally stupid" Bland-Allison Act, as Walter Breen called it. The

Only 75 proof examples were coined, although David Akers estimated that 35 to 40 examples still exist today, a figure that seems a bit optimistic to us. In the Bass Collection catalog, Dave Bowers suggested that "fewer than half survive today." Although pedigree research for proof gold coinage is an extremely difficult undertaking, we believe that a roster of known examples would probably only have about 25 entries. To understand the challenges of the researcher, take a close look at the illustration of this example, and see if there are any individual blemishes that will help to track previous appearances of this coin. While doing so, make certain that the blemish is a trait of the actual coin, and not of the plastic holder. At the same time, consider that the double eagle has the largest physical size of any proof gold coinage, and the problems of pedigree research (especially involving smaller size coins) become immediately apparent.
This remarkable double eagle, a Superb Gem in every way, has exceptional aesthetic appeal. Every design feature is fully detailed. Both sides are fully brilliant with deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices, exhibiting heavy mint frosty, especially on the reverse. The surfaces have fully wavy or watery texture, sometimes alternatively called "orange peel" texture, common to all proof gold coins of the late 19th century. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (6/06).
From The Belle Glade Collection.

The mysterious "Little Princess" is, simply put, one of the rarest issues in over two centuries of United States gold coinage. Its unknown, but obviously tiny mintage was not recorded in the
Annual Report of the Director of the Mint
and, according to many specialists, is comprised entirely of proof strikings in various states of preservation that were originally intended for inclusion in specimen sets. Others, such as David Akers, have written that the population of 15 to 17 survivors is too high in comparison to other proof Quarter Eagles from the decade as well as similarly dated gold proofs of other denominations, and that a few of the lower grade pieces may have been struck from the same dies, but under different circumstances. Writing in 1999, Mark Borckardt suggested that a portion of the known pieces were issued for specimen sets intended for collectors and dignitaries while others could have been produced for "presentation or some other purpose, perhaps for some long-forgotten ceremony. In 1841 the quarter eagle was the smallest gold coin produced by the United States (the gold dollar did not make its debut until 1849). Thus, a civic, political, commercial, or other ceremony requiring gold coins as an honorarium or gift would find the quarter eagle to be convenient." Perhaps also, Mint officials wished to have a continuation of dates in the Quarter Eagle series and so a few clandestine pieces may have been struck strictly to serve this purpose.
Although there were several offerings of this important rarity during the 19th century and a brief notation in Snowden's 1860 work
A Description of Ancient and Modern Coins in the Cabinet Collection at the Mint of the United States,
the numismatic community was relatively unaware of the 1841 Quarter Eagle until the Edgar H. Adams publication, first released in 1909, entitled
