| Lot: 3675 | Nov 1, 2013
Sold For:
$35,250.00
1871 $10 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS.
This is a date that is very seldom seen in either business strike or proof format. Only 1,790 business strikes were produced and a meager 30 proofs were minted. Far fewer than the original mintage of 30 pieces exist today though. Akers estimated only 7-8 have survived, while Breen believed that as many 10-12 might still be extant today. In either case, the 1871 is one of the rarest dates in the entire With Motto type as a proof.
This is an exceptionally attractive example and the finest 1871 we have offered since the PR64 we offered in our June 1999 Long Beach Sale. Curiously, this piece has a similar pedigree identifier to that coin. The piece we sold at that time had a tiny planchet flake above the first 1 in the date, while this piece has a tiny planchet flake above the second 1 in the date. Deeply mirrored, the richly frosted devices create a strong cameo contrast on each side.

1871 $1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC.
From the first variety described by Breen in his
Proof Encyclopedia,
and apparently the Proof variety normally encountered. An amazing black and white Cameo proof, and among the finest such coins currently known. NGC has certified six examples of this date as Ultra Cameo, including three at the PR67 grade level, although that figure probably represents just one or two coins. The pristine surfaces appear to be void of any toning spots or pedigree markers. A couple letters in the motto show slight doubling, but this is not the doubled die variety described by Dave Bowers in his
Encyclopedia.

| Lot: 3772 | Jan 12, 2023
Sold For:
$18,600.00
1871 $2 1/2 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC.
The recorded proof mintage of 30 examples attests to the rarity of this issue. PCGS has graded only a single Deep Cameo piece, a PR63 specimen, while this piece is one of two PR64 Ultra Cameo pieces at NGC, with none finer (11/06). In fact, neither service has certified a Gem proof of this date, regardless of the degree of contrast, and there are only 13 pieces at both services, less the inevitable resubmissions. The lump on the neck below the lovelock is a diagnostic of genuine proofs (per the Breen
Proof Encyclopedia
), and the date is quite high and close to the bust. The luscious, deeply contrasting yellow-gold fields yield to a glint of magenta near the obverse rim.

1871 3CS PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC.
Mintage records indicate that 960 of these Proofs were struck in 1871, and possibly one-third of those actually survive today. Very few of those survivors are in Gem or Superb Gem condition. In fact, this example is the single finest Proof example certified by NGC. It is also
the only Ultra Cameo
of the date certified by NGC, regardless of grade. Similarly, PCGS has never graded a Deep Cameo example of the date. Both the obverse and the reverse are fully brilliant without any trace of toning. The fields and devices have exceptional contrast. This is a beautiful coin for the connoisseur. For the collector of Cameo Proof coinage, it is the ultimate. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (1/05).

1871 $1 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS.
Both proofs and business strikes are relatively available of the 1871 Seated dollar. A generous production run of 960 proofs is the second highest in the series (the 1870 being the highest). However, very few of the remaining proofs have the depth of mirrored reflectivity and stark cameo contrast seen on this piece. Both PCGS and NGC agree as only two other pieces have been so graded with five finer (12/04). Brilliant throughout with a few light hairlines visible on the obverse.

Perhaps the ultimate Liberty Seated Half Dime for a date or type collection. The surfaces are fully brilliant on both sides. Deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices provide a desirable black and white appearance, so highly prized by collectors. Population: 4 in PR67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (5/05).

1871 5C PR66 Deep Cameo NGC.
The 1871 (960 pieces produced) ranks seventh in rarity among proof Shield Nickels (per Peters and Mohon, 1995). What's more, this issue is anything but common with a Deep Cameo finish. This is the first coin to receive such a designation from NGC or PCGS (7/02), and it is a bright, untoned Gem. The glassy fields form a splendid backdrop to the powerfully impressed and warmly frosted devices. There is not a single blemish that would call into question the validity of the PR66 grade.

Auction 300
| Lot: 5811 | Sep 28, 2002
Sold For:
$6,440.00
1871 H10C PR67 Deep Cameo NGC.
The 1871 half dime had a Proof mintage of 960 pieces. Walter Breen, in his
Complete Encyclopedia,
indicates that many of these, along with those dated 1872 and 1873, were extensively melted in July 1873. Along this vein, NGC and PCGS combined have certified fewer than 300 1871 Proofs, many of which are resubmissions. More significantly, relatively few of these are Cameo examples, particularly Deep Cameos. Indeed, a mere total of three coins meet the Deep Cameo criterion. The stunning example presented here displays chalk-white frosty motifs and highly reflective fields, and is untoned. A sharp strike emboldens the design elements, and the surfaces are devoid of mentionable marks. A few tiny "pimples" in the upper obverse fields may result from a rusted die. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (1/06).

1871 10C PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC.
This is the sole example of the 1871 proof dime to be designated as either Ultra Cameo or Deep Cameo by one of the major grading services (11/06). As one might expect from the designation, the black on white contrast is dramatic, with just the smallest trace of peripheral russet toning that affects neither the effect nor the eye appeal. A few tiny hairlines appear to determine the grade.
