1781 Libertas Americana Medal PR 55.
Silver. Betts-615. 47.5 mm. This medal was previously lot 8315 in our Chicago ANA Sale, where it was described as follows: "Engraved by Augustus Dupre. A later die state showing the diagnostic die break below the 4 in the date as a trailing lump of metal. The obverse of this historically important medal shows the figure of Liberty with flowing hair and a Liberty cap atop a pole behind. The date of independence is in the exergual area: 4 Juil. 1776. The reverse is full of symbolism: The infant Hercules (America) strangles two serpents, representing the battles of Saratoga and Yorktown, while protected by France garbed as Minerva, who fends off an attack by the British lion. Below the raised exergue line are the dates of these two key battles celebrating Arnold's and Washington's victories over Burgoyne and Cornwallis: 17 Oct. 1777/19 Oct. 1781. The peripheral legend NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS translates 'The infant is not bold without divine aid.'
"The Libertas Americana medal is universally considered the most beautiful of the various Peace Medals. Its design was suggested by Benjamin Franklin while he was ambassador to France. The mottoes were supplied to Franklin by Sir William Jones and are taken from Horace's ode 'Descende Coelo.' The dies were engraved in 1782 and the obverse design had a long-lasting effect on both American and French coinage. The most obvious influence was upon the 1793 half cent, a design that was obviously directly lifted from the Libertas Americana medal. Other early U. S. copper designs used this charming medal as a design model and Andre Galle borrowed liberally from it for his important
Liberte Francoise
design of 1793 as well.
"The Libertas Americana is highly elusive in silver...we have never seen or handled a piece that was in such a superior state of preservation. The devices show just the slightest evidence of rub on the highpoints, and there are a few trivial contact marks and hairline
