1914-D 1C MS66 Red NGC.
The 1914-D was better struck than the Denver issues of 1911-1913, and this is an especially sharp example with crisp definition on Lincoln's beard and coat, and all lettering on both obverse and reverse.
Only 1.193 million cents were struck in Denver in 1914, and it was recognized as a key issue in the Lincoln series as early as the 1930s. The '14-D is an issue that is also difficult to locate with fully lustrous surfaces. In addition to reddish-tan coloration, this lovely coin displays smooth surfaces that ensure its status as one of the most desirable survivors available to advanced specialists. The strike is razor-sharp throughout and every feature rises powerfully above the fields. Census: 5 in 66 Red, 0 finer (7/06).
From The New York Eye Appeal Collection.

1914-D 1C MS66 Red NGC.
This Premium Gem has a sharp strike with fully articulated devices with the exception of slight weakness that is limited to Lincoln's cheek and beard. The surfaces are frosty and highly lustrous with a few tiny freckles but no other blemishes. Among fully brilliant red examples of this date, NGC and PCGS have combined to grade just eight pieces with none finer (11/06).
Although quite a few early branch mint Lincoln cents are condition rarities in similar grades, the 1914-D is a date that collectors immediately recognize as a key to the series in all grades, along with the 1909-S VDB cent, the 1922 Plain, and the 1955 Doubled Die variety. This issue has been recognized as a rare date for a great many years. For example, the 1936 edition of Wayte Raymond's
Standard Catalogue of United States Coins and Currency
recorded a value of $2.50 for this date, the highest price of any Lincoln cent issue. By comparison, the same catalog listed a value of just 50 cents for the SVDB cent.
Most surviving Mint State examples of this date are probably from a hoard of 700 pieces mentioned by Walter Breen and still in existence through the early 1950s. Others are from two rolls of spotted red and brown pieces that was discovered in Hawaii or the Philippines during the 1970s, according to a first-hand account by Dave Bowers. Census: 5 in 66, 0 finer (11/06).

1914-D 1C MS66 Red NGC.
The 1914-D was better struck than the Denver issues of 1911-1913, and this is an especially sharp example with crisp definition on the Lincoln's beard, coat, and all lettering on both obverse and reverse. Unlike most of the '14-D cents we have seen, this piece exhibits rich, even mint red color, with none of the brown tinting usually encountered.
Only 1.193 million Cents were struck in Denver in 1914, and it was recognized as a key issue in the Lincoln series as early as the 1930s. In the 1935
Standard Catalog,
the 1914-D was tied with its S-mint counterpart as the most valuable Lincoln Cents--at $2 each. As the popularity and value of Lincoln Cents increased dramatically in the 1950s and 1960s, so did the number of counterfeits of this issue. One author has speculated that there may actually be more counterfeit 1914-D Cents around today than genuine coins--a situation that is analogous to the 1916-D Dime.
The surfaces on this piece are exceptionally clean and problem-free with no obvious or distracting abrasions on either side. Magnification shows one mark behind Lincoln's neck that can be used as a pedigree identifier. This piece is at the pinnacle of preservation for this key issue and is certain to end up in a major Lincoln Cent set. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (2/05).

1864 1C L On Ribbon MS66 Red NGC.
The mint introduced a new obverse hub type for the Indian Cent in 1864 that would continue in use through 1886. Snow (1992) estimates that only 5 million coins of this new hub type were produced, a paltry total when compared to his estimate of 34 million examples for the 1864 Bronze No L variety. The coining staff at Philadelphia had difficulty mixing the new bronze alloy, and many With L examples display streaks over one or both sides. The present example, however, is free of all but a single streak of slightly deeper color at the left side of the obverse. The balance of the surfaces are awash with satiny textured, copper-golden luster. The razor sharp strike is noteworthy for this often indifferently produced type, and there are no abrasions of note. A few minor flecks of carbon are discerned on each side, but these hardly detract from this Gem's remarkable appearance. Census: 3 in 66, none are finer at either service (11/05).

1909-S 1C MS66 Red NGC.
This final-year key date example exhibits wonderfully preserved surfaces that incorporate a generally strong strike and shimmering luster. Inescapable minor weakness is noted on the headdress feather tips. Deep copper-red-gold coloration evenly blankets both sides. Blemish-free with a modest number of flyspecks, on each side, that gather near the peripheries, this is an important Premium Gem representative of the lowest-mintage date in the long-lived Indian Head cent series. Census: 5 in 66, 0 finer (3/06).

1909-S 1C MS66 Red NGC.
The undeniably full mint luster presents more of a copper-golden than a reddish appearance, but it is attractive and desirable, nonetheless. The strike is a trifle soft over a few of the tips of the feathers in the headdress, but the eye appeal remains strong due to the presence of minimal muting of color for an early S-mint cent. There are also no individually mentionable post-production blemishes or spots. Produced in limited numbers (309,000 pieces), the final-year 1909-S is one of the undisputed keys to the business strike cent series of this type. Census: 5 in 66, none are finer (4/06).
