1793 Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS 66 Brown NGC.
S-9, R.2. One of the more frequently encountered varieties, the S-9 is characterized by the curved sprig on the obverse, and on the reverse by the wide, rounded bow and four trefoils in a line with the word CENT. While one of the more "common" varieties of Wreath cents, there is nothing common about this coin. It is far and away the finest Wreath cent we have ever offered at public auction, regardless of variety. In fact, according to EAC standards it is tied with the Auction '83 example for finest known. The surfaces are bright and glossy; in fact, the fields have a hint of semi-reflectiveness giving the coin a medal-like appearance--which is further reinforced by the devices that are set off by themselves and unobstructed by abrasions or unnecessary legends. The striking details are extraordinarily sharp with needle-like definition on the hair curls of Liberty. The bright glossiness of the coin is overlaid by medium brown patina with just a hint of original underlying red. The only identifying feature we see that could be used for pedigree purposes is a tiny spot in the lower right obverse field out from the lower portion of Liberty's neck. From the "Peerless" Collection of high grade type coins.

1831 1/2 C Original C-1 or EO-5, B-1, R.6. Die State 1. PR58 NGC. XF45 EAC.
Cataloged as C-1 if it is a business strike, or EO-1 if it is a proof (see the next lot for more details regarding this notation). Small date, large stars; High leaf below right side of S. Only one die state is recorded for the 1831 Original Half Cents. In all states of preservation, and no matter how they were struck, there are slightly fewer than 30 examples known today. When Bowers and Merena sold this coin as part of the Norweb Collection in 1987, it was offered as an important business strike example. Now, NGC has certified it as a Proof. Both business strike (if they exist) and proof 1831 Half Cents are from a single die pair, the obverse die later used for the 1831 Restrike Half Cents, and the reverse used in 1832 for Cohen-1 of that year.
There has been an ongoing debate regarding the status of 1831 Original Half Cents. Are they all business strikes, all Proofs, or are there some of each? This debate took place in the pages of
Penny Wise,
especially in 1996 and 1997. It makes for interesting reading. Ron Manley presented his opinion that they are all Proofs, and he was supported by Frank Wilkinson. Alternatively, Rick Coleman suggested that there are both proofs and business strikes. For the interested reader, we recommend reviewing these articles with an open mind, and then coming to your own conclusion. This cataloger is still considering both sides of the debate, having yet to reach a conclusion.
Sharply struck with olive-brown surfaces accented by lilac, deeply faded from original mint color. The fields are mildly reflective, not deeply so as usual for Proofs. A tiny area of verdigris or corrosion is seen on the obverse, and on the reverse is a small rim bruise over M of AMERICA.

1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems MS66 Brown PCGS.
S-135, High R.3. Sheldon-135 is one of three varieties (the other two are S-119 and S-123) made available in Uncirculated grades due to the Nichols Find. The numismatic legend surrounding these pieces is that a bag of Large Cents was obtained directly from the mint in 1797 by former Continental Congress member Benjamin Goodhue. After a series of family inheritances, they were dispersed in the 1860s by David Nichols. Sheldon-135 is more frequently encountered in Mint State than in Fine condition, but a glance at third party populations indicates that Uncirculated pieces are nonetheless scarce, and become rare in MS65 and finer grades. The present premium Gem has lovely medium golden-brown color. A tiny spot beneath the hair ribbons must suffice for pedigree purposes, since the piece is remarkably void of abrasions. The strike is sharp and even throughout the obverse, and a bit softer on the lower half of the reverse than on the upper reverse. The eye appeal is remarkable for an eighteenth century Large Cent, and would be a highlight of an early type set from the First Philadelphia Mint. Certified in an old green label PCGS holder.

1953-S 50C MS66 Full Bell Lines PCGS.
The '53-S is the well known key among Full Bell Lines Franklin Halves. On the surface, this issue does not seem like a numismatic rarity. The San Francisco Mint produced 4.1 million Half Dollars this year, a limited, yet not excessively low total by the standards of this series. Typically (i.e. weakly) struck examples, even with Gem quality surfaces, are readily obtainable, as evidenced by the fact that PCGS alone has seen 1,797 coins in MS65. On the other hand, fully struck representatives are of the utmost rarity and desirability. Both major grading services have seen only 29 Full Bell Lines examples in grades that range from MS63-66 (5/01), and the present example is tied with one other MS66 PCGS specimen for finest certified honors.
Soft pink, blue, orange-russet, and lavender color swirls intermingle over both sides to form a continuous blanket of iridescent toning. The strike is the sharpest that we have ever seen on a '53-S Half Dollar, with the all-important reverse bell lines being razor sharp from end to end. Of course, the number of abrasions is also uncommonly few for the type. A coin of singular beauty and technical quality, and a must-have example for the dedicated Franklin Half Dollar collector.
Ex: Rarities Sale (Bowers & Merena, 1/01), lot 246, where it realized $69,000.
