1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. Net PR55.
The attribution, as well as the striking characteristics, identify this coin as one of the 1879 Flowing Hair Stellas struck in standard gold alloy early in 1880. The otherwise sharp definition wanes a little in the centers, particularly on the obverse, and one can even see some Mint-made striations in these areas. Despite some mishandling, the surfaces retain much of the original proof finish. The fields are appreciably reflective and the devices are suitably frosted in finish. The interplay between this reflectivity and frosted texture provide a relatively pleasing cameo effect that is more-or-less evident depending upon the light angle. Both sides exhibit green-gold coloration with scattered hairlines from a cleaning. A few moderate distractions are noted on the obverse around Liberty's neckline and before the brow, and there is a reverse pinscratch from the left border.
We are pleased to be offering more than one representative of the fabled Flowing Hair Stella in this sale. While the present specimen is not perfect, it does offer plenty of crisp striking definition, much of the original finish, and pleasing coloration for a more modest sum. A respectable candidate for inclusion in a gold type set.
From the Virgil Farstad Collection, Part Two.

Piedmont Collection, Korea, Kuang Mu Russian domination silver 1/2 won year 5 (1901),
Crowned Russian Imperial eagle, with orb and scepter, in circle/Value in wreath, SCKC-41.1, KM-1123, Choice BU with a few very light reverse hairlines.
An extraordinary example of the rarest of the Russian influence types.
Increased Russian influence in Korea, from 1896 to 1904 resulted in three types of coins (1 chon, 5 chon, and 1/2 won) being struck with a Russian eagle in place of the Japanese style dragon. After the Russian threat was eliminated by the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), Japan established a direct protectorate over Korea. Japan maintained this direct control until the end of World War II.

1781 Libertas Americana Medal PR 55.
Silver. Betts-615. 47.5 mm. This medal was previously lot 8315 in our Chicago ANA Sale, where it was described as follows: "Engraved by Augustus Dupre. A later die state showing the diagnostic die break below the 4 in the date as a trailing lump of metal. The obverse of this historically important medal shows the figure of Liberty with flowing hair and a Liberty cap atop a pole behind. The date of independence is in the exergual area: 4 Juil. 1776. The reverse is full of symbolism: The infant Hercules (America) strangles two serpents, representing the battles of Saratoga and Yorktown, while protected by France garbed as Minerva, who fends off an attack by the British lion. Below the raised exergue line are the dates of these two key battles celebrating Arnold's and Washington's victories over Burgoyne and Cornwallis: 17 Oct. 1777/19 Oct. 1781. The peripheral legend NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS translates 'The infant is not bold without divine aid.'
"The Libertas Americana medal is universally considered the most beautiful of the various Peace Medals. Its design was suggested by Benjamin Franklin while he was ambassador to France. The mottoes were supplied to Franklin by Sir William Jones and are taken from Horace's ode 'Descende Coelo.' The dies were engraved in 1782 and the obverse design had a long-lasting effect on both American and French coinage. The most obvious influence was upon the 1793 half cent, a design that was obviously directly lifted from the Libertas Americana medal. Other early U. S. copper designs used this charming medal as a design model and Andre Galle borrowed liberally from it for his important
Liberte Francoise
design of 1793 as well.
"The Libertas Americana is highly elusive in silver...we have never seen or handled a piece that was in such a superior state of preservation. The devices show just the slightest evidence of rub on the highpoints, and there are a few trivial contact marks and hairline

8424 - The Nixon National Bank of Reno
Reno, Nevada
1906-1915 (title changed)
George S. Nixon was a prominent Nevada business and political figure at the turn of the century. He befriended a rising young man who would later become the most powerful man in Nevada during the 1920s - George Wingfield. Their partnership earned a fortune for both and Nixon went on to become a U.S. Senator from Nevada. Nixon's banking interests were located in Winnemucca and Reno and collectors can thank him for contributing to the numismatic history of two banks.
