1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. Net PR55.
The attribution, as well as the striking characteristics, identify this coin as one of the 1879 Flowing Hair Stellas struck in standard gold alloy early in 1880. The otherwise sharp definition wanes a little in the centers, particularly on the obverse, and one can even see some Mint-made striations in these areas. Despite some mishandling, the surfaces retain much of the original proof finish. The fields are appreciably reflective and the devices are suitably frosted in finish. The interplay between this reflectivity and frosted texture provide a relatively pleasing cameo effect that is more-or-less evident depending upon the light angle. Both sides exhibit green-gold coloration with scattered hairlines from a cleaning. A few moderate distractions are noted on the obverse around Liberty's neckline and before the brow, and there is a reverse pinscratch from the left border.
We are pleased to be offering more than one representative of the fabled Flowing Hair Stella in this sale. While the present specimen is not perfect, it does offer plenty of crisp striking definition, much of the original finish, and pleasing coloration for a more modest sum. A respectable candidate for inclusion in a gold type set.

There is considerable controversy surrounding not only the number of extant proof 1855 Type Two Gold Dollars, but also the pedigree of several of the pieces. Take for example the roster provided on page 197 of Akers's catalog for part one of the John Jay Pittman Collection, where he pedigrees Pittman's example to William H. Woodin. On page 132 of their King of Siam Sale, Superior states that the Woodin specimen is not Pittman's coin, but rather the Newcomer/Boyd/Bareford example. As far as we can tell, there are eight known representatives of this rare proof Gold Dollar, and the present example is
not
any of the following:
1- United States Mint; Smithsonian Institute.
2- J. P. Morgan; ANS.
3- Elmer Sears (4/09); John H. Clapp; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; United States Gold Collection (Bowers & Ruddy, 10/82); Trompeter Collection (Superior, 2/92), lot 1, where it realized $148,500. This coin was graded Gem Brilliant Proof by Superior.
4- World's Greatest Collection (Numismatic Gallery, 1/46), lot 9; Floyd T. Starr Collection (Stack's, 10/92), lot 1084, where it realized $105,000. Stack's graded this coin Brilliant Proof.
5- John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/97), lot 866, where it realized $121,000. Choice proof, according to Akers.
At least three other proof 1885 Type Two Gold Dollars are believed extant, and this Cameoed example is either one of those coins, or (less likely) a newcomer to this issue's roster.
This is a lovely proof with deeply mirrored fields and lightly frosted devices. The hair curls over Liberty's forehead are a little softly impressed, but, unlike the Starr specimen, the date is fully defined, even over the top of the second digit. The color is basically yellow-gold in shade, some orange tinged accents have settled in the recesses of the obverse portrait and the left reverse wreath. The scuffy overall appearance of both sides confirms the PR62 designation, but the only worth

Ex: Trompeter. This year witnessed the first in a series of minuscule double eagle deliveries from the Philadelphia Mint that would continue through 1887. In 1883, 1884, and 1887, the Mint delivered only proofs, while in the remaining years the production of business strikes was so small that extant representatives are equally as elusive as their proof counterparts. The current issue is no exception to this rule. The Philadelphia Mint produced a mere 2,260 business strike double eagles in 1881 and 61 proof specimens. Numismatic scholars believe that, of the former, 20-25 pieces are extant. Proof survivors number no more than 18 pieces, of which one is impounded in the ANS Museum and another is part of the Smithsonian's holdings.
An undeniably important offering for the advanced gold specialist, the present coin also boasts superior eye appeal for the grade. Scattered hairlines are evident under a loupe and seem to account for the PR62 designation. Outwardly, however, the surfaces display a relatively clean appearance with a single contact mark below Liberty's nose being the only worthwhile pedigree marker. The cameo contrast is noted, but the fields reveal the depth of reflectivity that one would expect from proof production methods. Fully struck with warm, original orange-gold and green-gold coloration.

A splendid and desirable specimen of this Centennial-year rarity. This is a lovely Cameo proof example of the Type Two double eagle, produced only from 1866 to 1876 and distinguished from the following Type Three coinage by the abbreviation TWENTY D. rather than TWENTY DOLLARS. A total of 45 proofs were struck in 1876. In the Bass catalog, Bowers speculates that this was "perhaps in anticipation that visitors to the Centennial Exhibition of American Independence in nearby Fairmount Park would sally over to the Philadelphia Mint." If this was the case, they did not save them in higher numbers. Numismatic researcher Walter Breen, in his
Encyclopedia,
published in 1988, said only 8 to 10 proofs are thought to exist. The rarity of this coin is probably underrated. In fact, Breen also makes the same estimate of 8 to 10 pieces surviving for the 1875 proofs, of which only 20 were made.
The fields are highly reflective and provide excellent cameo contrast against the frosted devices. Improper storage, however, has led to numerous contact marks, digs, and other distractions, the most obvious located on the obverse in the exposed, highly reflective areas surrounding the cameo of Liberty, but also there are some minor marks on the cheek and neck. The reverse at first glance appears cleaner, but examination with a glass does reveal a scrape running from the F and above AME. The strike is bold with star centrils, hair details, and the eagle's feathers and shield all well brought up. Even with the obvious flaws, this remains an appealing and desirable Cameo proof of one of the rarest double eagle types. NGC reports a proof population of one in 62 Cameo (this coin), with nine higher, while PCGS has certified two coins in Proof 62 (non-Cameo), with eight higher (10/05). This is undoubtedly another example of multiple resubmissions and crossovers from one service to another.

For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Mint produced no three dollar gold pieces for circulation. The facility did, however, deliver 45 proof specimens from a single pair of dies. The earliest group of 20 coins was produced on February 19. The dies were then stored until a further 25 group of coins was delivered on June 13. The obverse die was improperly stored in the interim, resulting in rust developing over Liberty's portrait. Under a loupe, small rust pits can be discerned in Liberty's headdress, confirming this coin as one of the 25 pieces from the later delivery. This example features lovely black-on-gold Cameo contrast between the frosted devices and the glassy fields, with a hint of olive-green on Liberty's face. A few trivial ticks in the fields and a couple of nicks on Liberty also reveal themselves under a loupe. The reverse has a small spot of dark toning on the 7 in the date. The reverse die is rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise. Despite these minuscule imperfections, this coin maintains significant eye appeal. The PCGS
Population Report
records this Proof 62 Cameo as the sole and highest example of the 1876 within the Cameo designation, while four other coins have graded higher within the Deep Cameo designation (11/05).

An intricately struck apricot-gold specimen, the devices display obverse contrast with the mirrored fields. Wispy slide marks in the fields determine the grade. The 1892 is a noted rarity within the Liberty Double Eagle series. Just 93 proofs were struck in addition to only 4,430 business strikes, far fewer than sufficient to satisfy the many collectors of the series. Undoubtedly, a large number of the proof production was eventually spent or even melted, since proof Double Eagles did not carry a significant numismatic premium above face until well into the twentieth century. NGC has certified a mere ten proof 1892 Double Eagles in all grades. Population: 1 in 62 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer (4/05).

For a coin that is so rare in the absolute sense, it seems odd that we should have two Ultra Cameo 1892 double eagles in the same auction. Only 18 to 25 coins are believed extant today with precious few that show Deep or Ultra Cameo contrast. In fact, this is the only PR62 that NGC has certified with a meager three pieces finer (1/05). The surfaces are obviously hairlined, but the orange-peel texture of the fields is still plentifully obvious with magnification. The devices are heavily frosted and present a strong white-on-black contrast against the "black" fields.
