Some proof 1877 Indian cents show a blob on the right serif of the T in CENT. Yet others show weak dentils, rounded rims, and a lack of sharpness on the headdress details. This coin is made from neither of those dies, exhibiting a normal T in CENT and excellent sharpness on the obverse and reverse alike. The surfaces are medium brown, with tinges of iridescent blue and glimpses of tan-gold around the device edges. Proofs of this date are under intense pressure due to the rarity of business strikes, although they are no more rare than other proof cents of this era. The most likely estimate for the number of proofs minted is about 900 coins. Census: 12 in 65, 1 finer (8/06).

In the past twenty years or so, the collecting of cameo proof coins has become a popular area of interest. Modern methods of manufacture by the Mint provides collectors with a fresh supply of cameos every year. But it hasn't always been so. Prior to 1970, no one paid much attention to so-called cameo coinage. Frosted devices were merely something that happened ever so often. People collected because they wanted a proof of that date, not because it had contrast. In the years prior to 1970, cameo coinage was an outcome of die preparation, planchet preparation, press operation, and die maintenance. The rule of thumb has long been that no cameo coinage was produced between 1936 and 1942. The present lot clearly shows that is not an absolute.
The surfaces are full red and unmellowed. Close examination with a loupe reveals no contact marks or flyspecks of carbon that account for the grade, but all in all this piece has a pristine appearance and actually appears much finer than PR65 to the unaided eye. The devices are heavily frosted and present a strong cameo contrast against the deeply mirrored fields. This coin is sure to be of great interest to the large number of type collectors who are building an Ultra Cameo type set.

This beautiful proof exhibits vivid lime-green, crimson, and orange toning in the fields which highlight the purplish-tan motifs. The design features are exquisitely struck, revealing no areas of mentionable weakness. There are no significant abrasions to report, and just a few light, unobtrusive "water-like" spots are noted on the obverse. Census: 6 in 65, 12 finer (11/05).
