Only in 1859 did the Mint begin publicly offering proof gold coins (and other coins) to collectors. The 1862 double eagle, with a recorded proof emission of only 35 pieces, is among the lowest-mintage double eagles of the era. While the proof mintage of double eagles in 1861 is reported as 66 pieces, why the 1862 mintage sank to nearly half of that number is unknown, although an intelligent guess might be doubts related to the outcome of the Civil War. Even the business-strike double eagle mintage plummeted, from nearly 3 million pieces in 1861 to a bit more than 92,000 coins in 1862. Proof Type One double eagles of any date are extremely desirable and infrequently encountered.
The Breen
Proof Encyclopedia
calls this issue "in the same rarity class with the eagle and half eagle," and the Breen
Complete Encyclopedia
says, " Possibly 12-15 proofs known, some impaired." David Akers commented in 1982, "This date is very scarce in all grades, and is especially difficult to locate in high grade. In fact, it is more likely to be found in Proof than it is in AU or Unc. ... Proofs of 1862 are very rare but are encountered with greater regularity than most other proofs prior to 1881. I estimate that 12-13 proofs still exist out of the original 35 mintage."
The authors of the indispensable Garrett-Guth
Gold Encyclopedia
wrote, "The 1862 issue is probably the earliest Type 1 double eagle likely to be encountered in Proof. Although the mintage is fewer than for the previous few years, more examples have survived. There are probably only about a dozen examples known, including two in the Smithsonian and another in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. Any Type 1 double eagle is a major rarity in Proof, and the demand for the issue far outstrips the supply. The auction record for the issue goes to a gem Proof coin sold in 1998 for $203,500. The average grade seen for the issue is usually PF-63 or PF-64." Confi

The mysterious "Little Princess" is, simply put, one of the rarest issues in over two centuries of United States gold coinage. Its unknown, but obviously tiny mintage was not recorded in the
Annual Report of the Director of the Mint
and, according to many specialists, is comprised entirely of proof strikings in various states of preservation that were originally intended for inclusion in specimen sets. Others, such as David Akers, have written that the population of 15 to 17 survivors is too high in comparison to other proof Quarter Eagles from the decade as well as similarly dated gold proofs of other denominations, and that a few of the lower grade pieces may have been struck from the same dies, but under different circumstances. Writing in 1999, Mark Borckardt suggested that a portion of the known pieces were issued for specimen sets intended for collectors and dignitaries while others could have been produced for "presentation or some other purpose, perhaps for some long-forgotten ceremony. In 1841 the quarter eagle was the smallest gold coin produced by the United States (the gold dollar did not make its debut until 1849). Thus, a civic, political, commercial, or other ceremony requiring gold coins as an honorarium or gift would find the quarter eagle to be convenient." Perhaps also, Mint officials wished to have a continuation of dates in the Quarter Eagle series and so a few clandestine pieces may have been struck strictly to serve this purpose.
Although there were several offerings of this important rarity during the 19th century and a brief notation in Snowden's 1860 work
A Description of Ancient and Modern Coins in the Cabinet Collection at the Mint of the United States,
the numismatic community was relatively unaware of the 1841 Quarter Eagle until the Edgar H. Adams publication, first released in 1909, entitled

Like most rarities in the U.S. series of coins, much has been written about the 1875 three dollar gold pieces. Official Mint records indicate that just 20 of these coins were struck, but this figure seems impossibly low given more than that number are known to exist. At one time, Walter Breen and Wayte Raymond tallied more than 30 different examples. Current estimates suggest a population of 20 to 30 coins.
The 1875 three is one of the 100 greatest U.S. coins, according to authors Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. In their book of the same title, they discuss this issue:
"In the field of United States gold coinage, the year 1875 has a magical allure. Indeed, the 1875 gold dollar, quarter eagle, three dollar gold piece, half eagle, and eagle are all formidable rarities. However, the 1875 three dollar gold piece has been a long-time favorite among numismatists, given its tiny mintage and perennial fame. In the early 1880s, when it was realized that the $3 denomination might be discontinued (which did happen in 1889), numismatists began to collect the defunct series with vigor. As more and more enthusiasts began to focus on the $3 denomination, the 1875 emerged as a prime rarity."
In an effort to explain the considerable numismatic population of this issue, Walter Breen claimed that some examples are originals and others are restrikes, produced in later years and unknown quantities. A general rule for proof gold coins is that half the mintage still survives, and this suggests a mintage of 50 to 70 coins. Assuming that 20 of these were struck in 1875, then 30 to 50 of Breen's restrikes were coined in later years. However, David Akers objected to the restrike theory of Breen:
"The term 'restrike' has been used when discussing the 1875, but properly used, the term 'restrike' denotes a coin that is struck in a year later than its date. Such has not been conclusively proven to be the case with the 1875 three dollar gold piece, and
