Sold For:

1804 1C XF45 NGC.
S-266, R.2. Die State IV. The die crack is pronounced over the RTY of LIBERTY, and another break is visible over MERIC on the reverse. While not a particularly scarce date, only one variety is available of the 1804. Thus, the collectibility of the 1804 is broken down by distinctive die states. This piece has darker brown surfaces with just slightly lighter highpoints over the devices. A couple of light scratches on the profile of Liberty are the only notable blemishes, the other marks present are consistent with the grade. EAC 25.

1804 XF 45 NGC.
S-266, Die State C, R.2. Along with the 1799, the 1804 has, since the dawn of American numismatics, been considered a key date among early coppers. This coin is from the advanced state of the dies, showing a die crack at the rim over RTY in LIBERTY on the obverse, and another over MERIC in AMERICA on the reverse. Only one die was utilized for the year, and as a result the 1804 cent is a very popular and much-in-demand coin. The surfaces are medium brown with darker gray color clinging to the devices.

1804 1C XF40 Details, Corroded, Bent, NCS.
S-266, R.2. Die State C, with large die breaks (as made) above RTY in LIBERTY and MERIC in AMERICA. No bend is readily evident, but the mahogany-brown surfaces are moderately porous, and a couple of faded pinscratches are noted in the left obverse field and on Liberty's cheek. Although not especially rare as a Sheldon variety, S-266 is the only die marriage for the year, and thus is a stopper for those who collect by date.

1804 1C XF 45 Corroded.
S-266b, R.2. The 1804 is a key issue among early coppers and this is the second subvariety of this date (and the only variety for 1804), identifiable by the die break over RTY on the obverse and no break on the reverse. The surfaces show faint evidence of corrosion but are generally pleasing in appearance with variegated medium and darker brown patina over both sides. Problem-free and well defined on Liberty's hair curls. Uncertified.

1804 XF 40 Spiked Chin.
B-5, C-7, R.5. Condition Census for this extremely difficult variety. A review of known coins finds the best to be AU, a few that grade XF, then several in various stages of VF. Here is a stunning, beautiful, original XF coin that boasts natural brown color, defect-free surfaces, and is well struck. Identifiable by a tiny mark above the ES of STATES, another below the C of AMERICA. Late Die State VI, with the heavy rim break over OF A on the reverse. The reverse die broke apart early, forcing its retirement, and creating this rare variety. Half cent collectors today are faced with a daunting task, few high grade examples are offered, and when a collection of rarities appears, they must purchase all they can or be forced to wait, perhaps even years, for another offering of rarities to cross the auction block. The Dr. Montgomery Collection contains a feast for collectors, rare varieties, spectacular errors, and pedigreed coins that have been off the market for decades.
