1872 $20 Amazonian Twenty Dollar, Judd-1251, Pollock-1393, R.6, PR58 PCGS.
The famous "Amazonian" design by William Barber shows a bust of Liberty facing left on the obverse, surrounded by 13 stars, with the date below. The reverse has a defiant eagle with spread wings grasping a shield, around the margin is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The surfaces show very little evidence of friction and each side is deep brown with iridescent undertones. A very pleasing and more affordable example of this famous pattern design.

Auction 1299
| Lot: 4587 | Sep 6, 2019
Sold For:
$3,840.00
1841 Original PR 55 PCGS. An original striking as evidenced by the large berries on the reverse. Originals are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof half cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five showing signs of circulation, as with this piece. The fields show no reflectivity and both sides have medium brown patina with a few signs of handling, none of which are serious.

Sold For:
$3,450.00
1843 Restrike PR 58 PCGS. Second Restrike. R.7. Muted reddish-brown surfaces with a couple of shallow marks on the face of Liberty. As noted in the Nate Smith write-up, a high wire rim encircles this circulated restrike.
Ex: Nate Smith Collection (Stack's, 3/73), lot 70.

Auction 181
| Lot: 6150 | Jan 13, 1998
Sold For:
$3,450.00
1844 Original PR 50 PCGS. Breen estimates that at least a dozen proofs are extant today in all grades. This is one of three known to have slipped into circulation for a short while. Lightly worn over the highpoints, the surfaces are deep brown and while no reflectivity remains, there are also no carbon spots.

Auction 1390
| Lot: 7655 | Jan 17, 2026
Sold For:
$3,416.00
1836 PR 45 PCGS.
Original. Low R.6. As Breen points out, the originals are often confused with First Restrikes and can be told apart by the rims on the originals (less distinct than on the restrikes) and buckling of the die on the restrikes. The dark brown-olive surfaces show minimal wear from handling and no distinctive marks. A tiny carbon spot is noted in the field near the juncture of the neck and throat of Liberty, another is to the right of star 7, and finally a spot is wedged between star 13 and the lowest hair curl.
A note written on the back of the flip that accompanies the coin indicates this piece was purchased from a Robert Batchelder sale, 6/73, for $1,450.

Auction 190
| Lot: 5840 | Aug 10, 1998
Sold For:
$3,220.00
1870 $1 Seated Liberty Dollar, Judd-1020, Pollock-1155, Low R.7, PR50 PCGS.
The regular dies for the 1870 Seated Liberty dollar. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Only about six or seven of these pieces survive in a variety of different grades. This piece has probably been cleaned, and now has acquired intermingled reddish-brown and darker olive with a small area of green corrosion along the left obverse border.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

1862 1C One Cent, Judd-290, Pollock-348, Low R.7, PR58 PCGS.
An off-metal strike from the regular Indian Cent dies, produced in copper with deep brown and lighter olive color. Faint traces of original red mint color appear in the protected areas of the design. Currently listed in the new "Judd" book as Low Rarity-7; however, Andrew Pollock rated this R.8.

1843 1/2 C Original PR58 PCGS.
B-1a, R.6. Writing in 1983, Walter Breen states that at least two original proof 1843 Half Cents accidentally escaped into circulation. This may be one of those coins, but we stress that the overall eye appeal would do justice to an unimpaired grade. There are no areas of excessive rub, and distracting contact marks are minimal and not readily evident. Rich dark brown toning envelops both sides with suggestions of olive color intermixed on the obverse.

The reverse features a wheat wreath surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and encompassing 2 CENTS, the word CENTS being more dramatically curved. Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge. The fields retain almost full reflectivity and the surfaces are deep brown with light blue accents in the fields. There are two noticeable carbon spots on the obverse.
