1889-CC $1 MS64 Prooflike PCGS.
Brilliant and sharply struck with impressive cameo contrast created by fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices. This piece has a far superior strike to most, and it displays excellent eye appeal. The '89-CC is easily the rarest Carson City Mint Morgan dollar, and it is one of the most famous dates in the series, along with the 1893-S and the 1895 proof issues. While all 1889-CC Morgan dollars are rare in Mint State grades, especially so in Choice and Gem condition, many of those pieces have prooflike surfaces, perhaps half or more of all Mint State examples.
It seems that many or most of the 350,000 coins minted were placed in circulation toward the end of the 19th century, ensuring a supply of circulated examples for collectors today. While most collectors certainly desire a Mint State coin, the reality is that few have the budget to obtain such a coin. For those who do, this example is a remarkable piece that will be enjoyed for years to come.
At one time, this date was actually considered to be overrated in Mint State grades. However, such days are long past, and now market prices for this issue in higher grades may actually be too low. Periodically, beginning in the 1930s, small groups of '89-CC dollars were distributed by the Treasury department. While rumors of bag quantities persist and were especially rampant in the 1950s, none have ever turned up. Dave Bowers reported declining an opportunity to buy a bag of this date from Ben Stack many years ago. Population: 7 in 64 Prooflike, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.

1889-CC $1 MS64 Prooflike PCGS.
While the occasional Mint State 1889-CC Morgan is not particularly uncommon with prooflike fields, such coins are in constant demand by collectors as they represent the ultimate in aesthetic appeal for this key date Carson City issue. The glassy surfaces on the important near-Gem example offered here possess enough reflectivity that a DMPL rating had to be a consideration, and are untoned save for a few irregular splashes of peripheral color on the obverse. Just a touch of light chatter is seen here and there in the fragile fields, while a few shallow facial disturbances rule out a higher classification. One of the finer examples of this well known Morgan Dollar rarity that we have offered in quite some time. Population: 4 in 64, 0 finer (3/04).

1847 $10 MS64 Prooflike NGC.
With 862,258 coins produced, the 1847 is a plentiful No Motto ten dollar. However, even it is scarce in MS64 condition with this piece being the finest certified by NGC (11/04). Its specialness is further reinforced by the bright, sparkling prooflike fields on each side, a most unusual and attractive attribute for gold coins of this period. Well, but not quite fully struck, the surfaces are lightly abraded with the only mentionable mark located between the eagle's beak and the left (facing) wing.

NGC 1889-CC MS 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike.
A pleasing cameo by any standards, but made even more desirable by the rare combination of the 1889 date and the CC mintmark. Both sides are fully reflective and actually simulate the appearance of a branch mint proof except that the rims are rounded instead of square. A delightful, iridescent lilac toning has formed on the obverse and the reverse, confirming the original, uncleaned status of this important coin. To date, this is the ultimate grade for a DMPL 1889-CC. NGC has graded only three, with none higher, and PCGS has graded only two, with none higher. "Rarest of the rare" is an apt term for this incredible 1889-CC dollar.

PCGS 1889-CC MS 64 Prooflike.
No other Carson City issue of this type garners the respect of the '89-CC. The dispersal of vast quantities of CC Morgans from Treasury and Redfield hoards saw every date, including the 1879-CC, increase in uncirculated numbers from roughly 5,000 coins to over 900,000 pieces. Every date, that is, except for the 1889-CC with only a single bag from government vaults being the chief source of mint state pieces today. A generous percentage of '89-CC dollars exhibit either prooflike or deep mirror prooflike fields, but the vast majority of those are heavily abraded and grade MS 63 at best. The outstanding coin offered here borders on deep mirror status and shows only minimal surface marks. There is a hint of subtle golden toning at the borders and the coin can be attributed in the future by a small planchet streak on the right portion of the wreath. Among prooflike and deep mirror prooflike examples graded by both PCGS and NGC, only a single NGC MS 65 Prooflike rates higher. Population: 1 in 64, none finer.
