1892 $2 1/2 Proof Quarter Eagle--Struck Through--PR64 Heavy Cameo ANACS.
The 1892 is a better date within the Liberty quarter eagle series. 105 proofs were struck, in addition to 2,440 business strikes. Both proof and commercial mintages would be exceeded every year thereafter, until the Indian type was introduced in 1908. This undisturbed specimen features frosty devices and darkly mirrored fields. The contrast is formidable, particularly by the standards of 19th century proofs. Striking incompleteness is limited to a few obverse dentils near 7 o'clock, and on the eagle near the base of the shield. The latter area has softer detail because a small amount of foreign matter was imbedded in the recesses of the reverse die. Again, as with several of the coins in the Henderson consignment, this piece is a doubly significant as it is an error struck in gold and it is an error on a proof coin. Undoubtedly, a number of other proof 1892 quarter eagles share the same strike-through; for example, lot 8650 in our January 2005 FUN Signature auction.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.

Sold For:
$12,650.00
1977-S $1 Eisenhower Dollar -- Struck Through & Retained Copper Staple -- PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS.
An unusual error, struck through a copper staple with the staple fully retained in the planchet. The staple runs from the IB in LIBERTY through Eisenhower's portrait to the final 7 in the date. The President's profile is clear of the staple. The coin itself is deeply mirrored and beautifully preserved, with brilliant surfaces.

2002-S 1C Error Cent--Struck on 10C Planchet--PR66 Deep Cameo Uncertified.
At first glance, this is just another 2002-S proof set in the original holders and box of issue. However, the Cent has the same color as a Dime, and despite the double strike that proofs receive, the letters in UNITED STATES have the slight spread that is characteristic of a wrong planchet error. Improved quality controls at the mints have made relevant 2002-dated errors nearly unheard of, and this spectacular wrong planchet error (presumably struck on a Clad Dime) in an original proof set will receive no shortage of attention from devoted specialists. 1969-S 1C Lincoln Cent -- Struck on Clad 10C Planchet -- PR63 PCGS.
A perfectly center wrong planchet strike, showing beautiful liquidlike mirrors and frosted devices. All border legends are readable and clear. The central devices are sharp. Undesignated contrast is apparent on both sides.

2010-S $1 James Buchanan Dollar -- Reverse Indented by Scrap Between Strikes -- PR69 Deep Cameo PCGS;
and
2010-S $1 James Buchanan Dollar -- Struck Scrap, Brockaged by First Strike -- PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS.
This lot includes both the coin and the crescent-shaped scrap. The first strike on the coin was normal, and then the scrap from the planchet strip came between the coin and the reverse die, creating the indent on the second strike. The pieces are almost flawlessly preserved, yielding butter-gold color and deep mirroring. Housed in a custom dual PCGS holder. (Total: 2 coins)

1973-S 50C Half Dollar -- Close Overlap Double-Strike -- PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS.
A spectacular modern error, especially on a proof coin, showing a perfectly aligned, perfectly centered double strike with the second strike producing a second, elevated reeded edge around the reverse, while the first strike's edge expands beneath the collar. The coin is deeply mirrored and dramatically contrasted. The visual impact of this error is exceptional.

1977-S 5C Jefferson Nickel -- Double Struck Both Off Center, 35% & 40% -- PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS.
Both die impressions are off center toward 12 o'clock (relative to the obverse). The final strike produced sharp impressions of Jefferson and Monticello, with deep, watery fields surrounding. The unstruck portion of the planchet has irregular surface texture.

1945 10C Error Dime--Struck 5% Off Center--MS64 Full Bands PCGS.
Dusky charcoal patina outlines the devices and legends on the obverse, while the reverse has lighter apple-green and dove-gray colors. Struck slightly off center at 1 o'clock, affecting the tops of ERT in LIBERTY. The surfaces are virtually free from contact, and possess satiny luster. With its mintage of nearly 160 million pieces, little regard was given to this issue until the 1970s, when collecting by Full Bands became popular. The 1945 Dime has since been highly publicized within the hobby for its rarity with Full Bands, and deservedly so.

2007-S 25C Clad Utah Statehood Quarter -- Struck on Elliptical Clip -- PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS.
74 gns. Coins are struck from planchets, which in turn are punched out from coinage strip. Incomplete planchets are "clipped" in error parlance, and have various causes, such as a damaged or defective planchet punch. Many clips, though not all, are screened by riddlers and melted at the Mint. The present proof Utah quarter lacks a rim between 9 and 12 o'clock, relative to the statehood side, where the planchet was incomplete and failed to extend to the collar die during the strike. On the Washington side, traces of the copper core are apparent along the clip border.

A wide arc of extra flan shows on the lower right of the obverse and upper right of the reverse. The fields are prooflike, as often seen on off center coins, and the surfaces are generally untoned. One spot is located at 3 o'clock on the obverse rim.

No Date 5C Jefferson Nickel -- Struck on Clad 10C Planchet -- PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS.
In excellent condition, with deeply mirrored fields interrupted only by the starburst metal flow of the small dime planchet expanding between the larger nickel dies. The date runs off the flan and is unreadable, as does most of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The devices are sharp and modestly contrasted.

1942 Cent--Struck on a Dime Planchet--AU 50. Formerly offered as lot 5958 in our September Long Beach Sale, where it was described as, "Reasonably well centered with only part of the L in LIBERTY and the tops of E PLURIBUS UNUM missing. The surfaces have a muted golden-olive patina over the natural silver-gray from the dime planchet, probably a result of many years residence in the paper envelope this piece was consigned to us in. The devices show a rather heavy encrustation of charcoal-gray with the remnant of a fingerprint on the reverse."

1999 States Quarter--Double Struck, Full Brockage--MS 65.
The second strike overlays approximately 40% of the first and the mintmark has been obliterated as a result. Likewise, on the reverse it is not possible to determine which state coin is commemorated. Like the piece above, on the reverse the brockage image of Washington is greatly expanded.

1999-W G$10 Quarter-Ounce Gold Eagle--Struck With an Unfinished Proof Die--MS 69 PCGS. This issue was produced solely in proof format, but the present coin displays a uniformly frosted texture that has earned it a Mint State designation from PCGS. A pristine, yellow-gold Superb Gem.

1999-P States Quarter--Double Struck, Full Brockage--MS 65.
Struck twice with the second impression overlapping approximately half of the first. The stretched planchet has taken on a cupped appearance with a high lip to the left and right on the normal appearing side. Because of the brockage it is impossible to determine which state is commemorated. The reverse shows a full brockage with a greatly expanded profile of Washington the most apparent device.
