1855 $50 Wass Molitor Fifty Dollar VF30 PCGS.
K-9, R.5. The Wass, Molitor and the Kellogg fifty dollar pieces, both dated 1855, are the final two gold issues of the denomination to be produced in California. While the Kellogg fifty dollar coins are extremely rare, those of the Wass, Molitor firm are relatively available, for a price. Along with Moffat & Co., Wass, Molitor was a highly respected company in San Francisco.
Even after the San Francisco Mint opened its doors in 1854, all was not well in California commerce. The Mint would occasionally run out of parting acids, or copper for alloying, or other materials. When this happened, they had no choice but to shut down operations, creating temporary coin shortages. It was for this reason that Kellogg & Co. and Wass, Molitor continued to issue gold pieces.
While all earlier fifty dollar pieces were octagonal, the Kellogg and Wass, Molitor fifty dollar pieces were round. This is a pleasing honey-gold example with lighter yellow color at the borders. The surfaces are moderately abraded and the devices lightly worn, as expected at this grade level. A highly desirable memento from the California Gold Rush era. Listed on page 358 of the 2007

1830 Templeton Reid Quarter Eagle VF 35 PCGS.
Kagin-1, Breen-7730. One of approximately 1,000 pieces originally struck; an estimated two dozen are known today. This piece is evenly worn with some rich coppery-gold and purplish color in the protected areas. There is a dent at the G in GOLD that corresponds to the reverse and some other scattered marks on the surfaces that one would associate with a Territorial gold coin with this degree of wear. An extremely important piece for the collector of Georgia-related numismatic items and one of the very few Templeton Reid pieces of any denomination to become available in recent years.
Templeton Reid produced a very limited number of gold coins in Milledgeville and Gainesville, Georgia in 1830. His coins were denounced for being worth less than face value, although contemporary research has proven that they were, in fact, worth slightly more than face value due to their high fineness. Most were melted just after they were struck and are now very rare. For a more detailed account of these coins and the history behind them, we recommend Dr. Dexter Seymour's excellent research published by the ANS in 1974. Listed on page 271 of the 1998
