1853 1C --Struck 5% Off Center--MS64 Brown PCGS.
N-19, R.1. Technically a misaligned die, rather than an off center strike. A beautiful chocolate-brown near-Gem. Essentially unabraded, although a couple of mint-made planchet flaws are encountered on the central reverse. The obverse is misaligned toward 9 o'clock, while the reverse is properly centered. This is a later die state of Newcomb-19, which also features a boldly recut 3 in the date. The major devices are well struck, while the left side stars and the right side reverse border exhibit moderate softness of strike. EAC 60.

1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems MS64 Brown PCGS.
S-135, High R.3. The Philadelphia Mint used planchets of wide ranging quality to produce 897,510 Draped Bust cents in 1797. The best copper blanks arrived in August of this year and were used to produce many of the high grade survivors of S-123 and S-135. In late 1797 or early 1798, Senator Benjamin Goodhue acquired a bag of 1,000 1797 cents for his daughters. These coins were preserved by Goodhue's descendants in the Salem, Massachusetts area until the Civil War. In 1863, David Nichols acquired these coins and distributed them to collectors from his home in Gallows Hill, Massachusetts. Many of the coins in the "Nichols Hoard" were S-135 examples that were struck on high quality planchets from the August, 1797 production.
Although it is impossible to say for certain, this coin may owe its survival to Senator Goodhue and his descendants. The planchet is choice, with a smooth, nearly distraction-free texture and pleasing reddish-brown color. Hints of original glossiness are also evident as the coin rotates beneath a light. Both the peripheral details and the central devices exhibit impressive striking detail for the series. EAC 60. Population: 26 in 64 Brown, 9 finer (7/06).

1831 1C PR64 Brown NGC.
N-3, R.6 as a proof. Only 15 or 16 proofs of this die variety are known. This example is easily identified by a small spot on the tip of Liberty's bust. Denis Loring has been tracking proof large cents for a number of years, and he has compiled an extensive Census of several hundred coins dated between 1817 and 1857. Only one piece in his Census of 1831 N-3 has a higher grade, and three others are tied for second place, although this example is listed fourth. Both sides have pleasing proof mirrors with olive-gold and iridescent toning on both sides. It is sharply struck although all of the stars are flat as usually seen. A few tiny specks and contact marks are visible, but none are of any significance. EAC PR63.
Ex: Dr. George French; B. Max Mehl (1929 FPL), lot 503; T. James Clarke; R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; New England Rare Coin Auctions (11/1979), lot 38; 1989 EAC Auction, lot 321; Denis W. Loring; Eric Streiner; American Numismatic Rarities (3/2005), lot 1165; Goldberg Coins (2/2006), lot 495.

N-13, R.1. A lovely deep golden-brown near-Gem, smooth aside from a couple of faint marks on the left obverse field. A strike-through on the top of the U in UNITED identifies the present piece. EAC 60.

1839 1C Booby Head MS64 Brown PCGS.
N-5, R.3. Consistent and attractive olive-brown color enriches this crisply struck near-Gem. Hints of faded red color cling to ONE, CENT, and other protected areas. A few trivial obverse ticks; the reverse is essentially unabraded but has a couple of faint and unimportant spots.
