1911-D 25C MS65 PCGS.
Of the 1911-D, David Lawrence (1994) writes: "Strike is variable, but usually shallow. Occasionally some detail is very poorly struck up." The current Gem is an exception to Lawrence's assertion - a powerful strike has indeed imparted exceptional detail to the design elements, including Liberty's hair above the forehead, all parts of the shield, and the eagle's left (right facing) claw and adjacent arrow feathers - all areas that are often weakly struck. Near-white surfaces exhibit frosty luster, and just a wisp or two of light gold-tan color. A few unobtrusive, wispy handling marks are noted on the obverse.

| Lot: 4045 | Jan 6, 2007
Sold For:

1916 25C --Cleaned--ANACS. XF40 Details.
Pastel sky-blue and gold tints emerge from this briefly circulated key date quarter. Luster shimmers across protected areas, and Liberty's leg and shield show only moderate wear. Dull from a mild cleaning, but certainly a desirable representative of this famous and low mintage introductory issue.

O-108, High R.4. Aquamarine and lilac toning embraces this partly lustrous representative. Crisply struck save for softness above the eagle's right (facing) wing. A few moderate marks are found upon examination beneath a loupe. A scarcer die marriage. Census: 9 in 55, 10 finer (11/06).

1829/7 50C MS64 PCGS.
Ex: Queller. O-101, R.1. This is a mid Condition Census coin, the only two pieces we know of that are finer being the Suros and Farley coins. Sharply struck throughout, the surfaces show bright, satiny mint luster and each side has lovely golden toning with deep blue around the obverse periphery. A problem-free example with no obvious abrasions on either side. Population: 10 in 64, 3 finer (12/06).
Ex: Winter Collection (Stack's, 1/74), lot 1423.

Ex: Benson. Deeply reflective with stunning contrast at the untoned centers. Elsewhere, a cascade of colors covers each side. Violet, emerald, blue, and golden patina graces the obverse, while russet, peach, and blue-green peripheral toning appears at the reverse rims. Population: 3 in 65 Cameo, 1 finer (10/06).

Dramatically toned in ruby-red, lemon, and sea-green colors. Well struck and thoroughly lustrous with an unabraded reverse and a couple of minor marks on the upper right obverse field. A prize for the enthusiast of rainbow-toned silver coinage. As of (11/06), PCGS has certified only 19 pieces finer.

1900 A.B. Bumstead Lesher Dollar MS64 PCGS.
HK-789, Zerbe-3. No. 1535. This mildly prooflike piece is richly toned in golden-brown, cobalt-blue, and olive shades. Hairlines are absent, and contact marks are inconsequential. The strike is intricate aside from the highpoints, SINE on the scroll and the unmanned railroad car. The single finest PCGS-certified Lesher dollar, of any variety. Listed on page 371 of the 2007
Guide Book.

1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters. B-2, BB-72, R.4--Reverse Tooled--NCS. VF Details.
Nine stars left and seven right; Berry under A in STATES. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. The tooling seems to be limited to some pin scratches on the eagle from his neck down the right side to his leg, with a couple of others noted on the right wing. A fairly early die state with two points from the recut star found in the field below star nine (the second point is below the first and very faint) and we note the usual die scratches in the field near Liberty's neck. This is the only die state seen. Toned with medium silver-gray on both sides and the color is a bit mottled and dull. As a major variety this issue is fairly scarce and always in strong demand. For many years it was assumed that the 342 pieces struck on February 28, 1797 comprised the entire issue of this die pairing, but this promotional myth has finally been widely disproved simply by the number of examples known today which perhaps approach this fanciful figure. In recent decades numismatic scholarship has discovered many things and disproved others. While not as rare as once believed, this variety is generally available for a price. A good collector coin despite the pin scratches on the reverse.
Ex: Jacque and A.J. Ostheimer; Superior (1975 ANA), lot 837.

1798 $1 Close Date. B-25, BB-123, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
Whisker under chin, die dot in field between neck and star 12; Line star pattern, star 12 touches upper beak, points to right edge of B. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. The is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse in his
The United States Early Silver Dollars 1794 to 1803.
This coin is quite lovely and the evidence of cleaning hairlines are minimal and toned over with steel gray hues. The strike is sharp despite radial die cracks on the obverse. Close examination of the surfaces fails to find distractions aside from faint hairlines, which apparently were sufficient to place this in an NCS holder. Note the crack up from the rim to the 1 in the date, which then turns both left and right, virtually encircling the coin through the stars and LIBERTY. At the time this coin was struck, this crack has formed in length, but not in depth, and coins struck later display progressively thicker die cracks, much to the delight of numismatists who appreciate such nuances. On the reverse, there is a die crack from the rim up to the stem of the branch, and several die flaws reside in the right star field above the eagle. Certainly a coin that will delight most specialists despite the minor transgressions from the past.
Ex: Julian Leidman (10/14/1988).

Small 3, star 1 closer than star 7; Outer arrow point below leftmost base of N. Countermarked H.G. STONE on Liberty's chest in a rectangle. The counterstamp is by Hubbard G. Stone of New York City, New York and this countermark has also been reported on an 1840 Large cent as well as on spoons (Brunk pg. 282). Stone was a silversmith in that area. The host coin is very nice with dark gray color on both sides and lighter areas on the uppermost devices. Clean surfaces and problem free for the grade. Envelope Included.

1879-CC $1 MS63 PCGS.
Probably stored in a paper envelope for decades, this lovely Mint State representative is cloaked in golden-rose, orange, and steel-blue toning that allows full appreciation of the underlying luster. Only a the presence of a few more prominent reeding marks on Liberty's cheek rule out the possibility of a Choice rating.

A deeply mirrored and heavily contrasted example of this scarce, low mintage Carson City issue. Brilliant throughout, there are a number of grade-limiting abrasions on the face of Liberty as well as in the fields. Sharply defined and a flashy coin for the grade. Census: 20 in 62, 41 finer (12/05).

1884-CC $1 MS67 PCGS.
According to David Bowers (1993), nearly all of the original mintage exists today in Mint State; over one million pieces in all, which is the highest percentage of any Morgan dollar (91% plus), and the largest surviving population of any Carson City dollar. This Superb Gem features frosty, sharply struck motifs that are nearly snow-white and stand out against somewhat proof-like fields that have acquired a barely perceptible film of powder-blue color. The surfaces are immaculately preserved, showing just a few minor luster grazes in the left (facing) obverse fields. Exceptional technical and aesthetic quality. Population: 51 in 67, 4 finer (12/05).

The medium-gray frosty surfaces retain considerable luster on this representative of a perennially popular key-date coin. The breast and highpoint hair show grade-consistent wear, with the surface marks that are present exemplary of a brief period in circulation. Attractive and collectible. In a PCGS green-label holder.

1890-O $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS.
Essentially untoned and quite well struck for this often poorly defined (even among DMPL examples) New Orleans issue. A few shallow luster grazes on the cheek of Liberty are all that separate this nicely mirrored Gem from unparalleled condition. Population: 15 in 65, 1 finer (11/05).

1903-S $1 MS63 ANACS.
A semi-key Morgan dollar issue in Mint State, this example is razor-sharp in the centers with only a handful of widely scattered contact marks and a few noticeable slide marks on Liberty's cheek. A slight milky haze is evident on both sides, and mottled purple-rose and dark-green patina occurs near the obverse and reverse borders.

1928 50C Hawaiian MS65 PCGS.
The key to the commemorative silver series, this example is completely brilliant and fully original. Today, most specimens encountered range from AU50 to MS60. The Hawaiian coins sold for two dollars at the time of issue, the highest price charged for a commemorative half to date. This piece has been lovingly preserved since its purchase. Few visible marks, although examination with a glass exposes a couple of nicks on Captain Cook's cheek and shoulder and a couple of scrapes on the Hawaiian warrior chief's left (facing) breast and right leg. Robustly detailed, and a highly pleasing example of this vaunted key coin.

B-7, BB-18, R.2. Deeply and originally toned in shades of dark-green on the obverse, and light gray on the reverse. There are several crisscrossing adjustment marks on the reverse, otherwise there are relatively few marks on the surfaces of the coin. Overall, a desirable mid-grade example of the Flowing Hair type.

1875-CC T$1 MS64 PCGS.
Type One Reverse. Generally brilliant, although freckles of tan patina endow the reverse. This Choice Carson City Trade Dollar gains instant appeal with its bright cartwheel sheen and ultra frosty features. Scattered field marks and a reeding mark on Liberty's shoulder rule out the possibility of Gem status, but do not diminish the coin's admirable appearance. Population: 18 in 64, 1 finer (11/04).

Both the bright cartwheel sheen and bold definition serve this Choice Trade Dollar very well. The centers are virtually untoned while specks of russet and steel-blue peripheral color are most noticeable on the obverse. Abrasions are generally confined to the highpoints of the portrait.

1878-CC T$1 AU58 PCGS.
The mintage for the 1878-CC Trade dollar was a mere 97,000 pieces, and many of these were probably part of the 44,148 pieces that were melted on July 19 of this year, thus further reducing the net availability of this key issue. Very rare in mint condition, this near-mint example represents superior value for the collector. Most of the original luster still remains and the striking details are sharp overall. There are no obvious abrasions on either side, and both obverse and reverse are covered in hazy gray-lilac toning with an occasional dab of golden. Population: 6 in 58, 32 finer (12/04).

A bust of Liberty faces right. She wears a LIBERTY-inscribed diadem, and her hair is tightly bound with a ribbon. IN GOD WE TRUST reposes within a scroll below, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the portrait. The reverse has a wreath of corn and cotton with 50/CENTS/1870 inside and STANDARD centered above. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Sea-green, gold, and rose colors provide vibrant eye appeal. The centers are well struck for this pattern series, and the surfaces are impressively preserved. Population: 2 in 64, 0 finer (10/03).

VAM-3. Top 100 Variety. The outline of a mostly effaced 6 is found to the right of the base of the 7 in the date. The New Orleans Mint variety of the 1887/6 overdate is considerably scarcer than its 1887/6 counterpart. Although the centers are not fully struck, the remainder of the devices are bold, and the reverse is exceptionally preserved. The obverse has only faint luster grazes that do not challenge the assigned grade. As of (10/03), PCGS and NGC combined have certified 74 pieces as MS64, with none finer.

The right obverse field has an area of slightly granular surface, as made, while the reverse has a couple of retained mint-made laminations. A few wisps of charcoal patina grace each side.
