1863 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-351, Pollock-423, Unique, PR63 PCGS.
From 1861 through 1863, the United States Mint issued a series of pattern Ten Dollar gold coins, each from a regular Liberty Head obverse die in use at the time, and a reverse die of the regular design, slightly modified with the addition of a motto over the eagle. These had the little known GOD OUR TRUST motto, either in plain letters in the field, or on a scroll. Two different designs were produced each year for a total of six pieces in the collection. Only those with the 1863 date are known in gold, and just one is known of each type. About two dozen pieces are known today of this design that were struck in copper or bronze.
This is a unique pattern, and there has never been a hint of a second piece. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. This is an extremely important part of the pattern series, and perhaps as important as the appearance of this pattern at auction is its historic pedigree. The lucky purchaser of this coin will be able to add his or her name to a list that includes such collectors or collections as Col. Mendes I. Cohen, Hon. Heman Ely; the Garrett Family, and the Johns Hopkins University. The last time that this pattern traded at public auction was its appearance in the Garrett Collection sale of March 1980. Before that, it appeared for public auction sale only two other times, in W. Elliot Woodward's 69th sale, which took place in January 1884, and before that in Edward Cogan's sale of the Col. Cohen Collection in October 1875. This is only the fourth time this unique pattern issue has appeared for sale in the past 129 years!
With few exceptions, patterns struck in gold are among the rarest of the rare. Of all 19th century gold patterns struck in gold, the series of Four Dollar Gold Stellas are among the most plentiful. Nearly all of these patterns have populations under half a dozen coins and many are unique. Quite a few of these are in institutional collections including the Smithsoni
