1879 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1640, Pollock-1840, High R.7, PR66 Cameo NGC.
(PCGS# 62018)
Auction 1121
| Lot: 1930 | Jan 11, 2009
Sold For:
$97,750.00
1880 $4 Coiled Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1662, Pollock-1862, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
George Morgan's Coiled Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Deeply mirrored fields on both sides serve to highlight the devices of this lovely Gem Cameo proof. Both sides have brilliant light gray color with a dash of pale gold toning on parts of the obverse. Portions of the hair details are weakly defined due to striae from the planchet preparation process. Affected are a few strands of hair above the ear, as well as some of the braids on the coil of hair at the top of the obverse.
Like the other aluminum stellas, it is thought that just four to six examples are known. Among these are the set of four from the Jeff Browning Collection and the Garrett Collection set of four that was bought by Harry Bass. Three of the four Garrett pieces were retained by the Bass Foundation and are now on display at the ANA in Colorado Springs, CO. The fourth coin from that set was sold in the first Bass Collection auction by Bowers and Merena, thus the set is no longer intact. Two examples were offered in the King Farouk sale (Sotheby's, 2/1954), but neither is traceable today. Other appearances include an example in the 1979 ANA Sale by New England Rare Coin Auctions, an example in RARCOA's May 1969 sale that cannot be identified today, and one sold as part of a four piece set (three aluminum and one copper) by Kagin's in their sale of May 1978. The specimen we are offering is the Kagin's May 1978 coin.
Ex: Kagin's (50th Anniversary Sale, 5/1978), lot 1061.

1879 $1 Schoolgirl Dollar, Judd-1609, Pollock-1805, R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
The popular "Schoolgirl" design by George T. Morgan. A bust of Liberty faces left with the inscription E PLURIBUS*******UNUM****around and the date, 1879 below. Her hair is combed straight and tied with a ribbon, a headband crossing the top of her head is inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse depicts a defiant eagle facing left standing on a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
The "Schoolgirl" dollar is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful designs ever. According to Saul Teichman and Andy Lustig on the USPatterns.com website: "The 'Schoolgirl' name dates back to the April 1891 New York Coin & Stamps (D. Proskey and H.P. Smith) F. W. Doughty sale where a silver specimen and the unique white metal piece were offered. Proskey is credited with the name in the October 1911 edition of
The Numismatist
per Bowers & Merena's Rare Coin Review #110. The earliest known sale of this pattern was a silver specimen sold by Woodward privately in 1883 to T. Harrison Garrett. The first auction occurrence was in Woodward's 101st Vicksburg II sale of September 1888. It was plated in that catalog where it states that only the sale coin and the specimen in the Mint collection were known. (Note: Ed Frossard did the cataloging for that sale and may not have been aware of Woodward's earlier sale of a specimen to T. Harrison Garrett.) The Vicksburg example was bought in by Woodward and went into his 104th Stetson sale of January 1889. An example, probably the Vicksburg-Stetson specimen was sold in Frossard's June 1890 edition of Numisma. The first occurrence in copper was the example plated in the April 1892 New York Coin & Stamp Woodside sale. This coin was later sold by Woodside to Virgil Brand on 3/30/1895. It is likely that most known today in silver and copper trace their pedigree to the Woodin collection and were obtained in trade for 'returning' the two $50 gold p

1879 $1 Schoolgirl Silver Dollar, Judd-1609, Pollock-1805, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
The obverse portrays a youthful Miss Liberty with her hair tied by a ribbon, flowing down to her neck. A headband is inscribed LIBERTY. The date and E PLURIBUS UNUM follow the border, interspersed with two stars at the lower left, seven more at the top, and six at the lower right. Liberty is wearing a string of 13 pearls around her neck. The reverse has a defiant eagle standing on a pedestal inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST, with olive to the left and three arrows to the right. Around is the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination ONE DOLLAR below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The reverse design is similar to that found on certain earlier patterns, especially on some 1877 half dollar patterns that were also created by George T. Morgan. A similar defiant eagle design was created for the reverse of the Illinois Centennial half dollar, by John Sinnock.
Only 10 or 11 examples of this important and highly desirable pattern issue are known in copper, along with a slightly larger number of pieces in silver (14 confirmed), and a single example in lead. This glorious Gem has considerable original mint red color, along with attractive blue and lilac toning. The surfaces are pristine and void of any blemishes. A tiny spot below the left upright of M in UNUM and another below the first S in STATES are the only pedigree markers of any kind on either side. In fact, these two tiny spots positively identify this piece as the example that appeared in Bowers and Merena's August 1996 auction. Saul Teichman (USPatterns.com) has done extensive pedigree research for this variety, and lists just 10 examples on his website, possibly including some duplication. We had the pleasure of offering a similar quality example of this pattern variety in our September 2006 Long Beach sale. Prior to that appearance, the previous most recent auction sale of an example was in July 2002. These pieces

1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar Stella, Judd-1637, Pollock-1835, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
Charles Barber's Flowing Hair design. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This is a stunning light gray piece with fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices. Except for a few tiny specks on the devices, and faint hairlines that are barely visible in the reverse fields, this is a pristine representative. It is believed that just five or possibly six examples of this pattern are known in aluminum, including two pieces in this sale! Those known to exist include the Garrett-Bass coin, this example that appeared as part of a pattern stella set in Kagin's 50th Anniversary sale, the Jeff Browning Collection specimen, the Polis Collection (Bowers and Merena, 6/1991) example, and the gilt piece also offered in this sale. Five distinctly different specimens are listed here, although specific past pedigrees need further study, as two conflicting rosters were published in the early 1990s.

1876 $1 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar, Judd-1467, Pollock-1618, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
The obverse shows Liberty seated on the seashore, holding an olive branch, with conjoined flags behind her. A steamship is in the distance. Liberty's left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, although the word is rather weakly impressed on this example. Between the base and the date, IN GOD WE TRUST is presented in a cartouche. The reverse is rather plainly laid out with ONE DOLLAR in the center, surrounded by an olive wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the upper margin and E PLURIBUS UNUM in small letters at the bottom of that side. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. 1876 pattern dollars are very rare and many advanced collectors lack an example.
Only five examples of this particular pattern variety are alleged to have been struck, with just three pieces traced today. These pieces were struck on Trade dollar planchets, implying that they are legitimate Trade dollar patterns. The surfaces are lightly hairlined with no obvious or distracting blemishes on either side. Light golden toning is seen along the border on each side with much lighter, almost brilliant centers. The fields of this Gem are deeply mirrored with lustrous devices.

1882 25C Shield Earring Quarter Dollar, Judd-1698, Pollock-1900, Low R.7, PR67 NGC.
Liberty faces to the right and wears an earring that is shaped and designed like a shield, thus the name for George Morgan's pattern design. The E PLURIBUS UNUM motto is found along the upper obverse border with the date below. The fields have seven stars to the left and six to the right. The reverse has an eagle with raised wings in a defiant pose, holding an olive branch and three arrows. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is close to the upper reverse border and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This Superb Gem is an outstanding proof with excellent cameo contrast. Pale gold toning graces the deeply mirrored obverse fields with richer gold, lilac, and iridescent toning on the reverse. This piece easily qualifies for the Cameo designation. At USPatterns.com, Saul Teichman has listed exactly nine examples of this variety that are known to him. The specimen that we are offering here is number six on his list.

1877 50C Barber's Liberty Head Half Dollar, Judd-1526, Pollock-1694, High R.7, PR66 NGC.
These dies are attributed to William Barber. The obverse has a head of Liberty facing left, wearing a crested helmet inscribed LIBERTY with an eagle as part of the design. Above is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST with seven stars left, six right, and the date below. The reverse is the same design described for Judd-1524. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This is an impressive Gem with pale gold and iridescent toning over silver surfaces. It is an excellent specimen for its cameo contrast on both sides, the lustrous designs surrounded by deeply mirrored fields.
Only four examples of this pattern issue are currently known.
