The reverse wreath is made up of clusters of five leaves which is not the same reverse that was adopted in 1859, and as such is in reality a slightly different design than the previous lot. Both are attributed as J-208, but note the slight difference in reverse leaves. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Smooth, pale gold color.

The obverse has the date centered rather than low with the rounded bust of 1860 and later issues. The reverse has a laurel wreath with five-leaf clusters. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. A common pattern that is popular as a transitional issue. The surfaces are light tan-gray with lilac accents on each side. A shallow lint mark is located in the left obverse field in front of the Indian's chin.
From The Lanterman's Mill Collection, Part Two.

ANACS 1858 Indian Cent, Judd-208, Pollock-261, R.7, VF30.
The adopted Large Letters obverse of 1858 muled with the adopted reverse of 1859. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Even wear, obviously used for several years in the channels of commerce before someone noticed the reverse. Just a couple of pecks in the center of the reverse.

Sold For:
$440.00
1858 Indian Cent, Judd-208, Pollock-259, R.4.--Scratched--ANACS. AU Details, Net VF 30. The regular dies striking for 1859 with five leaf clusters on the reverse. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Numerous pinscratches on and to the left of the portrait spoil an otherwise appealing example of this precursor to the Indian cent.

A second affordable example of this popular copper-nickel pattern that is nearly identical to the adopted design of the following year.
