1863 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-351, Pollock-423, Unique, PR63 PCGS.
From 1861 through 1863, the United States Mint issued a series of pattern Ten Dollar gold coins, each from a regular Liberty Head obverse die in use at the time, and a reverse die of the regular design, slightly modified with the addition of a motto over the eagle. These had the little known GOD OUR TRUST motto, either in plain letters in the field, or on a scroll. Two different designs were produced each year for a total of six pieces in the collection. Only those with the 1863 date are known in gold, and just one is known of each type. About two dozen pieces are known today of this design that were struck in copper or bronze.
This is a unique pattern, and there has never been a hint of a second piece. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. This is an extremely important part of the pattern series, and perhaps as important as the appearance of this pattern at auction is its historic pedigree. The lucky purchaser of this coin will be able to add his or her name to a list that includes such collectors or collections as Col. Mendes I. Cohen, Hon. Heman Ely; the Garrett Family, and the Johns Hopkins University. The last time that this pattern traded at public auction was its appearance in the Garrett Collection sale of March 1980. Before that, it appeared for public auction sale only two other times, in W. Elliot Woodward's 69th sale, which took place in January 1884, and before that in Edward Cogan's sale of the Col. Cohen Collection in October 1875. This is only the fourth time this unique pattern issue has appeared for sale in the past 129 years!
With few exceptions, patterns struck in gold are among the rarest of the rare. Of all 19th century gold patterns struck in gold, the series of Four Dollar Gold Stellas are among the most plentiful. Nearly all of these patterns have populations under half a dozen coins and many are unique. Quite a few of these are in institutional collections including the Smithsoni

1916 50C Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-1991, Formerly Judd-1798, Pollock-2056, High R.7, PR63 PCGS.
Struck in the matte proof format favored by mint officials of the era, this silver-gray specimen is unmarked and best identified by a small number of short mint-made lintmarks on Liberty's skirt. Fully struck, Liberty's head and branch hand have definition uncommon to the eventual business strikes of the modified type. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
Judd-1991 is believed to be the earliest among the six varieties of pattern 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollars. The two major devices are very similar to their adopted counterparts but are somewhat smaller in scale. HALF DOLLAR is on the upper reverse instead of the reverse exergue, and E PLURIBUS UNUM is on the lower reverse instead of its usual position above the pine sapling. Unlike Judd-1992, LIBERTY is not fixed above the motto, but is distributed across the upper obverse border. No AW monogram is present.
Only four examples of Judd-1991 are presently known. These are enumerated by Saul Teichman at the website uspatterns.com. The pedigrees of the known pieces are:
1. Smithsonian.
2. Farouk?, William Mitkoff, sold to Pryor on 4/74, James Bennett Pryor Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/96), lot 330, as PCGS PR61.
3. Farouk Palace Sale (Sotheby & Co., 2/54), part of lot 2028; Superior (10/90), lot 1889; Baltimore '93 Auction (Superior, 7/93), lot 470, as PCGS PR63.
4. Robert Marks Collection, Part II (American Auction Association, 11/72), lot 1081; Austin Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 6/74), lot 1113; Morris Evans Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/98), lot 2101; Americana Sale (Stack's, 1/04), lot 3552. The present piece.
Since the Smithsonian example is presumably permanently impounded, only three pieces are available to collectors, a population identical to the famous 1913 Liberty Nickel. A remarkable opportunity that has dual appeal to both pattern specialists and Walking Liberty H

1879 25C Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1596, Pollock-1786, R.8, PR63 PCGS. This is the only example of Judd-1596.
Barber's popular "Washlady" design. The head of Liberty faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above and 1879 below. She is wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY. The headband is ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves, and bolls. There are 13 stars at the border arranged 7 left and 6 right. Normally paired with an upright eagle that is larger than the adopted design for the quarter, here is a unique specimen, struck in white metal, that is combined with the regular dies with motto reverse. The obverse is bright and noticeably striated while the more subdued reverse can be recognized by a planchet flaw on the border at 5 o'clock. According to the USPatterns.com website, this piece has traded privately several times over the past century, most famously being owned by Waldo Newcomer, and exhibited at the ANS by noted pattern expert William H. Woodin in 1914, and later owned by Major Lenox Lohr and offered for sale in 1960-61 for $475, but it has not been offered at public auction since the 19th century.

1795 DT$5 Draped Bust Half Eagle, Judd-23, Pollock-38, R.8, VF30 PCGS.
Dies of the regular issue 1795 Small Eagle half eagle, Breen 3-D. The reverse is the well-known blundered die with the final S in STATES over a D. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This early die trial is believed to be a contemporary or true pattern issue, unlike many off-metal pieces dating to the middle 19th century. Dark chocolate surfaces with lighter tan color around the devices. The surfaces are smooth and free of porosity, the only imperfections being a few minor scrapes on the reverse. On USPatterns.com, Saul Teichman reports: "Although the coin appears to be well worn, it is actually weakly struck and may have been made to space the dies prior to the striking of gold coinage."
Only two confirmed examples of the Judd-23 pattern issue are currently known. The other is from the Breen-1A dies, and it is defaced, thus the present example is handily the finest available example of this pattern variety. In his pattern reference, Andrew Pollock III noted a third similar piece, from the Breen-2C dies, with heavily granular surfaces that may be a cast counterfeit.
This example has an undertype with traces of the previous design visible across Liberty's forehead, and also in the lower drapery and hair details. Wavy lines at the center of the reverse are of little help in identification. Possibilities for the undertype include a cut-down large cent or a Talbot, Allum & Lee token. It is probably not a half cent undertype as the diameters are different enough to preclude such a scenario. Another possibility is that this piece was double struck, and there appear to be certain similarities between the design outlines of the different impressions. We believe that this die trial was struck twice, and that it was produced when the press was being set up, for spacing or alignment purposes.

The obverse shows Liberty facing left, her hair tied in a bun, E PLURIBUS UNUM above, the date below with stars to the left and right. The reverse has an elemental breakdown in the center, surrounded by a circle of tiny dots, a wreath of corn and cotton, and at the margin UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. These rarely seen pattern Dollars were issued in sets with the Coiled Hair Stellas and Morgan goloid metric Dollars. This is a lovely aluminum pattern whose surfaces are unoxidized. Only lightly hairlined and slightly hazy on the reverse, the main deterrent to a higher grade is a planchet flaw on the reverse below 100.
