1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS.
This is a sharply struck example, as are most, and it exhibits beautiful deep orange-gold color with frosty luster. David Akers has estimated that fewer than 20 pieces exist in MS64 or better grades, and current population data seems to support his words, written 20 years ago: The 1909-S is one of the four or five rarest issues of the series. Among San Francisco Mint issues it is virtually on a par with the 1915-S and is far more rare than the lower mintages 1908-S. Mint State examples at any level are rare and in the high Mint State grades, i.e. MS-64 or better, there are probably fewer than 20 specimens in all." Population: 16 in 64, 4 finer (11/06).

1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS.
The luster quality and color of this coin are in the minority for the issue. The typical 1909-S Indian Half Eagle is frosty with rich copper-gold color. The present example, on the other hand, displays bright, satiny features and medium intensity yellow-gold patina. This is a sharply impressed near-Gem whose surfaces are smooth enough to warrant consideration at an even higher grade level. The 1909-S (297,200 pieces produced) is equally as rare as the 1915-S, both issues being more difficult to locate than the first-year 1908-S. No more than 20 '09-S Half Eagles are believed extant above the MS63 grade level, an estimate that current NGC and PCGS population data support (especially if one makes allowance for resubmissions). Population: 13 in 64, only 4 finer (10/01).

1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS.
Previously offered as lot 8260 in our September 2002 Long Beach Signature Sale with a description that read: "Like the 1908-S and 1910-S, the 1909-S is a well produced issue that always possesses significant eye appeal in the finer Mint State grades. Unfortunately, coins that have been as well preserved as the present near-Gem are few and far between in today's market. Although produced in far greater numbers (297,200 pieces vs. 82,000 pieces), the 1909-S is much more difficult to acquire in Mint State than the 1908-S. The former issue is a rarity on par with the 1915-S, and the '09-S has the further distinction of being among the four or five rarest dates in the entire Indian Half Eagle series. The near-Gem that we are offering here displays interesting clashmarks (as struck) on the Indian's neck that Breen (1988) suggests are diagnostic of the issue. Otherwise, the surfaces are smooth with beautiful frosty luster and rich golden-rose coloration. Typically sharp for the issue with a bold, well defined S mintmark. This is the first Choice BU 1909-S Indian Half Eagle that we have offered this year." Population: 14 in 64, with a mere four finer (10/02).

1909-S $5 MS63 PCGS.
Akers considers the 1909-S Indian Head half eagle to be among the top four or five scarcest issues in the series. This is one of only 22 Select Mint State examples certified (by both NGC and PCGS). This coin has lovely coppery-reddish tinted mint frost. The striking details are strong throughout and there are no obvious abrasions on either side. Population: 19 in 63, 20 finer (10/06).

1909-S MS 64 NGC.
Sharply struck with exceptionally clean surfaces that are suggestive of a full Gem grade. Both sides show appealing, mellow crimson-gold color. The '09-S is among the top four or five dates in the Indian Head half eagle series in terms of overall rarity. Among S-mint issues, the 1909-S is comparable in rarity to the 1915-S and is much more difficult to locate than the lower mintage 1908-S. A rare opportunity for the 20th century gold specialist, NGC has graded only 6 examples in MS 64 with none finer (9/99).
