Breen 2-A, Breen-6830, Taraszka-2, Bass-3170, BD-2, High R.4. Most authors worry that new information will be discovered shortly after a book is published. This coin seems to present new information regarding the BD-2 variety of 1795 half eagle. This following the publication of Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties by John Dannreuther and the late Harry Bass just last summer. The die state of this example is not consistent with known states previously reported. There is no visible evidence of any obverse cracks described by John Dannreuther or Anthony Taraszka, but a clearly visible die crack joins the northeast point of star 13 and the border. The reverse die appears perfect with no evidence of any die cracks. This means that this coin was struck prior to the latest die states of BD-1 except conventional wisdom dictates otherwise. It is currently believed that BD-1 was struck first, followed by BD-2. The obverse also shows no evidence of die lapping although the reverse is lapped.
This is either an early die state, struck before a second group of BD-1 coins, or it is a late die state with die cracks lapped away. We believe the former is more accurate. This coin was struck immediately after the earliest die states of 1795 BD-1, before the reverse die cracked. There is no doubt that the obverse die crack from star 13 to the border was merely overlooked by earlier observers.
This specimen is a lovely 1795 eagle with frosty mint luster and brilliant greenish yellow-gold color. The surfaces have a few minor abrasions that are consistent with the grade. It is highly attractive and free of all but the slightest peripheral adjustment marks. The central obverse and reverse design details are characteristically weak. Although the reported PCGS population shows several finer examples, most all of those are the BD-1 variety. This 1795 BD-2 variety is much scarcer with fewer than 100 pieces known in all grades.
