1881 G$1 MS67 PCGS. The U.S. Coinage Act of 1873 caused gold production in the next two years to skyrocket, but gold dollar mintages experienced a sharp downturn in 1875. Then, the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 was introduced to appease silver supporters who had seen silver demonetized only five years earlier, and many coinage resources were consumed by Morgan dollar coinage. Philadelphia reduced the 1881 gold dollar mintage to only 7,620 pieces in order to facilitate the 9.163 million Morgan silver dollars struck the same year. Remarkably, the 1881 gold dollar has survived with high-end pieces in Mint State, although all grades are challenging. This Superb Gem exhibits a bold strike with richly frosted devices on coruscating fields. Fiery orange-gold surfaces are blushed with iridescent hues of lavender and caramel, yielding an inspired presentation that is rarely seen with such a high grade. (PCGS# 7582)
