1839-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Winter-1.
The 1839-C half eagle is prized for its status a transitional issue in several respects. It serves as a one-year half eagle design type, featuring Christian Gobrecht's intended Liberty Head design change with its delicately curved bust truncation and obverse mintmark replacing the Classic Head William Kneass design. Gobrecht's work would itself be refined in 1840 to establish the long-running Liberty Head motif that served many gold denominations for decades. A small 17,205-piece 1839-C mintage was struck from a single die pair. As few as 150 to 200 pieces survive today in all grades combined. This nearly Choice About Uncirculated example is a sharply struck orange-gold coin with only nominal circulation wear and a peppering of tiny marks. Plentiful mint luster remains throughout both sides. PCGS Population: 11 in 53, 23 finer (4/26).

1840-C $5 AU50 PCGS.
Winter 2.
The 1840-C half eagle is one of the scarcer issues in the Charlotte series. From a mintage of 18,992 pieces, it is doubtful that more than 125 to 150 survive in all grades. All are the larger "broad mill" size. This About Uncirculated representative is finer than the typical example, showing well-struck motifs with light wear and no substantial marks for the grade. The surfaces exhibit original olive-gold patina with hints of coppery-red in the peripheral recesses. No major abrasions are present. PCGS Population: 13 in 50, 43 finer (4/26).

1850-C $5 Weak C, AU53 PCGS. Winter-4.
The upper curve of the mintmark is almost entirely distinct, while the lower curve is evident under close scrutiny. This Charlotte half eagle, one of 63,591 1850-C coins struck, showcases a remarkably strong strike and pleasing greenish-gold coloration. Predictably abraded. The 1850-C is popular for type representation, though finer coins are notably rare.

1854-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Winter-2.
Weak C Mintmark. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population of 1854-C half eagles at 140 to 170 coins -- not many for this underrated branch mint issue, which ranks seventh among the 24 Charlotte fives in overall rarity. A dappling of golden-gray toning adds eye appeal to this About Uncirculated piece. The star centers and central hair detail are above-average, with only slight weakness at the eagle's neck and head. Marks include light field chatter but no heavy abrasions.

1856-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Winter-1.
The 1856-C issue of 28,457 half eagles has historically been viewed as a fairly common Charlotte date. However, Doug Winter writes, "In my opinion, it remains an underrated and undervalued issue." The medium green-gold surfaces of this AU53 retain much of the original, frosty mint luster, often flashing subtle shades of orange and apricot. The strike is typical of the issue and is generally soft on the central motifs, but the device outlines and all legends are clear and the C mintmark is sharp.

1859-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Winter-1.
A scarce Southern gold issue. All 1859-C half eagles show soft definition on the eagle, because the reverse die was improperly annealed. The obverse is much sharper and displays generous pockets of remaining lemon-gold luster. Moderate ticks are noted southeast of the eye and above the date.

1860-C $5 AU53 PCGS. CAC. Winter-1.
Ex: The Fairmont Collection. Despite the 1860-C half eagle mintage of just 14,813 pieces (among the three lowest of the series), it is one of the more available issues from the Charlotte branch mint. The issue is challenged with production issues that were inherited from its 1859 predecessor. Both issues suffer from a reverse that, as Doug Winter describes it, "has extremely weak and 'fuzzy' detail." Most likely from either an improperly hubbed or annealed die, the reverse motif lacks detail and appears mostly blurry. Aside from the mint-made attributes, the strike is actually above average for the issue. The honey-gold surfaces retain much of the original mint luster and release soft hues of orange. CAC endorsed. PCGS reports only 12 examples in Mint State (4/26).
