Sold For:

1787 1C Fugio Cent, Club Rays, Concave Ends, FUCIO VF30 PCGS.
Newman 2-C, R.6. A rare die marriage that also marks the only pairing of either die. The obverse die is significant for two reasons. It has the engraving blunder FUCIO, and the rays are clubbed with concave ends. Five different Kessler-Newman Concave Ends varieties are known, and all are very rare to extremely rare. The two Rounded Ends varieties, N. 3-D and 4-E, are comparatively plentiful. The present piece is surprisingly sharp for the VF30 grade. Softness on the sun's face appears to be a characteristic of the die, and most sundial numerals are bold. Peripheral striking incompleteness affects the lower left obverse border, but the remainder of the legends are clear. The pale brown surfaces are unabraded, although a few minor planchet fissures are present. These are much less conspicuous than on, for example, the Norweb example of N. 2-C. In terms of wear and sharpness of strike, the current lot is equal to the Stickney-Ryder-Boyd-Ford example, and is superior to the latter when surface preservation is accounted for, since the Ford plate shows a relatively large spot on the reverse at 7 o'clock. Since the Ford specimen, cataloged by Stack's as Extremely Fine, sold for $27,600 in October 2003 during a less heated market, a comparable bid will likely be insufficient to secure the present lot. A significant opportunity for the alert specialist. Described as extremely rare on page 84 of the 2006
Guide Book.

1787 1C Fugio Cent, UNITED Above MS61 Brown NGC.
Newman 11-A, R.6. A memorable example of this elusive single variety type. The surfaces are primarily an attractive golden-brown with subtle steel-blue and violet accents. The strike is a trifle off-center and die breaks are noticed at 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock on the reverse, as nearly always seen. Fewer than two dozen 11-As are believed to exist, roughly half of which originated with the Bank of New York hoard. The few known survivors are generally AU or better quality. With interest in United States Colonials at an all-time high, we expect unprecedented interest in this important Fugio cent variety. Listed (and unpriced) on page 83 of the 2006
Guide Book.

1787 1C Fugio Cent, UNITED STATES, Cinquefoils MS66 Brown PCGS.
Newman 8-B, R.3. The UNITED STATES inner circle subtype is scarcer than its STATES UNITED variant. But regardless of the die variety, any Fugio Cent is desirable when found in the present outstanding condition. The chocolate-brown surfaces are glossy and unusually smooth, with scant evidence of the planchet inconsistencies that usually affect the series. The major devices are needle-sharp, and softness is only present on the uppermost reverse. Struck a couple of degrees off center toward 12 o'clock. The reverse die is prominently clashed, since the face of the sun is clear, and several letters in MIND YOUR BUSINESS are legible. As of (6/06), PCGS has certified only three Fugio cents of any variety at the MS66 level, with none finer. The other two MS66 pieces are STATES UNITED varieties. Listed on page 83 of the 2007
Guide Book.

1787 1C Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, 1/Horizontal 1 VF30 PCGS.
Newman 10-T, R.5. As of (4/07), PCGS has certified only four examples of this interesting engraving blunder, and the present lot is the finest among those by 15 points. This is an evenly struck and impressively detailed cent that exhibits diagnostics for the issue, obverse clashmarks and a reverse die crack at 7:30. Walnut-brown highpoints contrast with finely granular dark brown fields. Listed on page 83 of the 2008
Guide Book.

1787 1C Fugio Cent, Club Rays, Rounded Ends MS62 Brown NGC.
Newman 3-D, R.3. Unlike the more plentiful Pointed Rays varieties struck in New Haven in 1787, the various Club Rays varieties were contemporary counterfeits. They were produced at Machin's Mills in New York between 1788 and 1789. Because they were made later, the Club Rays pieces did not participate in the Bank of New York hoard. Mint State Club Rays Fugios are exceptionally rare. The present piece is the only example certified as Mint State by either NGC or PCGS. There are only two Club Rays, Rounded Ends varieties, and both are scarce. N. 3-D was believed at one time to be scarcer than its N. 4-E counterpart, but our auction records indicate more appearances of the former. The upper three rings are repunched south. This mahogany-brown example has an occasional hint of planchet roughness, but there are no detected post-strike marks or defects. Listed on page 84 of the 2007
Guide Book.
