1796 50C 15 Stars MS63 PCGS.
O-101. R.5. We are both honored and delighted to offer the 1796 15 Stars half dollar once owned by Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. This legendary collector assembled the only complete collection of U.S. coinage, either before or since, earning him the title "King of Coins." The current PCGS-graded MS63 coin appeared as lot 1673 in the April 1997 Bowers and Merena sale of the Eliasberg Collection, where it was described as "MS63, prooflike." The pedigree chain in that catalog included "... J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942 to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg estate." Interestingly, in Q. David Bowers' 1996 book entitled
Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.: King of Coins,
the author alludes to the notebook that J.M. Clapp used to record his coin acquisitions. Bowers presents some "brief remarks" gleaned from the notebook that relate to the various series. With regard to half dollars, he states: "Early issues were listed as complete by date and major variety and were highlighted by a Mint State 1795 ... and worn examples of the two varieties of 1796 and one of 1797. ... Beginning about 1806, Uncirculated coins are the rule among the listings."
Based on the above passages from Clapp's notebook, one might question whether the 1796 Select Uncirculated piece in the Bowers and Merena catalog (along with a 1796 16 Stars half dollar graded "MS63, prooflike," and a 1797 Overton-101a half described as "MS60 or finer, partially prooflike" can in fact be traced to the Clapp collection. Did Eliasberg sell or trade Clapp's "worn examples" of the three Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollars and replace them with Mint State specimens acquired from other sources?
There may, however, be another explanation of the apparent grade disparity between certain coins in the Eliasberg catalog and what are presumed to be the same pieces in the Clapp notebook. Mark Borckardt, who was heavily involved in researching and cataloging the Eliasberg collection, indicated to

1919-D 50C MS66 PCGS.
Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 finally marked the end of World War I. Since 1914, much of America's economy had been bolstered by manufacturing and production for the war effort. Now, due to the slackening need for war related supplies, the economy began to soften as the United States entered a period of isolationism. The Volstead Act (the prohibition of manufacture of alcoholic beverages) was also passed by Congress. Imports and exports of all goods dropped noticeably. As a result, all three operational mints were ordered to produce smaller denomination coinage, Cents, Nickels, Dimes, not Quarters or Half Dollars (no Silver Dollars or gold issues were struck in 1919).
Several years earlier, President Theodore Roosevelt was disgusted with the coin designs in circulation at the time, and made it his mission to have all the coinage redesigned. Roosevelt was especially interested in gold coinage, however his wishes also brought about the Lincoln Cent in 1909, the Buffalo Nickel in 1913, and silver coins all in 1916. Adolph A. Weinman, the designer of the Mercury Dime, also prepared the Half Dollar design. Many consider it one of the most beautiful silver coins ever produced by the U.S. mint and one of the two most beautiful of all coinage designs along with the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Even our present government gave a nod to these designs, choosing each for the recent American Eagle gold and silver coins introduced in 1986.
At the time, a discussion of this new design appeared in the
Annual Report of the Director of the Mint:
The design of the half dollar bears a full length figure of Liberty, the folds of the Stars and Stripes flying to the breeze as a background, progressing in full stride toward the dawn of a new day, carrying the branches of laurel and oak, symbolical of civil and military glory. The hand of the figure is outstretched in bestowal of the spirit of Liberty. The reverse of the half dollar shows an eagle perche

1817/4 50C --Corroded--ANACS. XF Details.
O-102a, R.7. It is always an exciting event when a newly discovered numismatic rarity is reported. Such was the case when an 1817/4 half dollar was unearthed (literally!) by contractor George Williams while raking fill in upstate New York. This is the eighth known specimen of the rare overdate.
News of the discovery appeared in the October 24, 2005 edition of
Coin World.
Williams said he ordered a load of fill for some foundation work he was doing. He was raking the soil when he heard a "cling." His son Nial, 19, turned the hose on the object and revealed an early date half dollar.
The
Coin World
article goes on to say that when Williams returned home with the coin, his 14-year-old coin-collecting son, Cullinan, looked it up in
A Guide Book of United States Coins
(the "Red Book"). The boy then printed a copy of Sheridan Downey's commentary on the 1817/4 half dollar in Collectors Universe's
CoinFacts.com
web site that revealed more details about the rare overdate. The entire family then became increasingly excited about the find. The coin was certified by ANACS with XF Details and some corrosion. This may well make it the second finest known survivor behind an AU50 example that sold last year for $333,500.
The 1817/4 half dollar was first announced to the numismatic community in the October 1930 issue of
The Numismatist,
under the "Editorial Comments-Numismatic News" section. We quote the commentary entitled
NEW VARIETY OF HALF DOLLAR OF 1817 REPORTED
in its entirety:
"E.T Wallis, of Los Angeles, Cal., writes that he has recently discovered a heretofore unknown variety of the 1817 half dollar, the last figure of the date being cut over a 4. A number of half dollars of 1817 over '13 are known, but this is the first one over '14 reported, Mr. Wallis says. He also says the coin is practically Uncirculated and the overdate can be seen plainly. The reve
