Key West, FL
- $10-$20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 485/499
The First NB
Ch. # 4672 Uncut Pair
This Key West $10 and $20 serial number 1 Brown Back uncut pair is the most important and historical Florida piece we have ever had the pleasure of offering in our many years in the paper money fraternity. We have handled great Florida individual items and collections in the past, but this uncut pair is not only a fantastic Florida National collectible, but also a piece of paper money that transcends borders and collections. Until the recent appearance of this serial number 1 Brown Back uncut pair, there was only one known serial number 1 Brown Back on the entire state, a $5 on the Citizens National of Pensacola. Key West became the county seat of Monroe County in 1824. The city continued to grow and it prospered with an economy based on fishing, cigar manufacturing, and salvaging ships wrecked on the nearby reefs. In April 1884 George Lewis, president of B.C. Lewis & Sons, bankers of Tallahassee and George W. Allen organized the Bank of Key West with a capital of $50,000. In 1886 the bank's building was destroyed by fire. What saved the bank was the fact that all paper money and records were stored in a fire proof vault. The second day after the fire, all of the contents of the vault were moved to the United States Naval Station and from there bank operations were conducted until other quarters could be found. This action with Allen, Lewis, and the tellers manning the "teller's table" gained the trust of the citizens of Key West and business went on as usual. Then in 1889 disputes arose between Mr. Lewis and the board of directors. The disputes continued and this caused the bank to go into receivership. Next, the cigar manufacturers of the city contacted Mr. Allen about organizing a new bank. Mr. Allen thought that a national bank would be the best route to go, so he organized the First National Bank with a capital of $100,000. On Christmas Eve 1891, the First National Bank was charter

Fr. 284 $10 1878 Silver Certificate Extremely Fine.
With the addition of this new piece from the Trask Collection, the census for Fr. 284's has risen to four. One is a damaged VG that has been off the market since 1986, and the other two are just about the same grade as this beauty, an XF that we sold in June 1994 for $19,800, and the Shiva example, called About Extremely Fine, which realized $27,500 in 1995. This note is problem-free, with super margins, bold colors and not a hint of a problem, repair or restoration of any kind. It has much of the visual impact of an uncirculated note, and, in a side-by-side comparison, this is very likely the finest known. The Hopper hand-autographed signature is in a bold, deep brown, and it contrasts beautifully with the red and blue overprints on this colorful and extremely rare note. This beauty is one of the Type Note highlights of this incredible collection formed from just after World War II until 1956. It has been over a decade since any Fr. 284 has been available at public auction, and the pent-up demand combined with the technical merits and tremendous visual impact of this extreme rarity could propel this note near or past the $50,000 mark.
From the collection of Malcolm A. Trask.

Fr. 123 $10 1923 Legal Tender Star Note Fine.
This auction marks the first appearance of either of the two recorded Fr. 123 stars at public sale in over a dozen years. Your cataloguer discovered this note some thirty years ago, and since that time it has had only three owners, including the current consignor. Just two examples of this star are known, a figure that has not changed in the intervening three decades, and, with the interval between the arrival of new pieces, the likelihood is that no more remain to be discovered. The other known Fr. 123 star is ensconced in the strongest of hands, and unlikely to be available to collectors for many years to come, making this the sole opportunity for any collector to achieve completion of a star note set by type. With the market for true numismatic rarities reaching record levels at every offering of same, we see no reason why this note, a legitimate rarity with only two examples known, should not reach or exceed...

The First NB of Porto Rico at San Juan
Ch. # (S)6484
We are overjoyed to have the privilege of offering one of the truly legendary items of the National Bank Note universe, the unique Puerto Rico Blue Seal. First discovered by a dealer in foreign bank notes some twenty years ago, it quickly passed into the hands of the collector who has owned it since then. While twelve examples are known from the "Island of Porto Rico," as it is designated on each note, all have been closely held for many years. Of the eleven Red Seals, only two appeared at public sale during the decade of the 1990s, with CAA selling one in 1993 which graded Very Good with a hole and realized $48,400 and Lyn Knight selling the Irish collection example, which was low grade and damaged, in 1997, where it brought $37,300. No new note from Puerto Rico has been added to the census since the discovery of this piece. This Blue Seal, which is unique, is, unlike so many of the other known Puerto Rico notes, damage free, (although we should mention for the sake of total accuracy that there is a chip missing from one of the corner tips), and bears clear pen signatures. It grades a pleasing
Fine
and is completely unmolested and utterly natural. Estimating rarities such as this trophy item has become almost impossible of late, especially when, as is the case here, collectors have been waiting for the better part of a generation just for the opportunity to purchase this note, but if rarity, desirability, and the dreams of several collectors meet tonight, we would not at all be surprised to see a realization in the area of...

Fr. 116 $10 1901 Legal Tender Note Very Choice New.
The only serial number 1 Bison ever reported, and almost certainly the only one to exist in or out of government hands. In fact, this note is one of only two single digit Bisons known, the other a serial number 4 Fr. 115. This note first appeared in a 1967 John Rowe ad (yes, John really is that old), where it was priced at $250. It was then in the 1971 Bill Donlon sale, and was then off the market for more than 20 years. It reappeared in a 1992 R.M. Smythe sale where it realized the then-astronomical $9,900. Number 1 notes have always held a special fascination for the highest level of type note collectors, and this Bison type is generally acknowledged to be the most significant of the "personality" notes. The note itself is impeccable, with deep original embossing, excellent margins, and perfect color. When one considers that an ordinary Bison in XF, with a census well into the hundreds, is a $1,000+ note, and a Gem Bison, with a likely census in the hundred range, is a $4,000+ item in today's market, one would expect this to be a six-figure item, perhaps even well into six figures. In May, 2001, we sold the only known serial number 1 Technicolor $20 for $176,000, and there is little question that at that time this note would have been in the same range. The fever for number 1 type notes has calmed considerably in the past three years, presenting an incredible opportunity for one well-heeled, forward-thinking collector to acquire what no one else can ever possess: the only serial number 1 Bison.

This is a note that dreams are made of, with its eye-popping rarity, serial number 1-A, and gorgeous traits. The note is a bright pen-signed beauty which appears new at first glance, although close inspection discloses a few very light folds, mandating a grade of

Fr. 2003-D* $10 1928C Federal Reserve Note. Very Choice Crisp Uncirculated.
This is one of the great small size rarities, and represents the first time we have ever had the opportunity to sell a 1928C $10 Federal Reserve star note in any grade in any CAA sale. This was a very short lived series issued by only five districts (with one still unknown to collectors even today). Star notes have been reported only from the Cleveland district, with the handful of known examples clustered in a very narrow serial number band of less than 2000 numbers. This example, which is a new discovery, fits right into that extremely narrow range. It turned up in a cash hoard of Cleveland district notes and was the only 1928C $10, regular or star, in the group. It is a lovely note, bright, fresh, utterly original and totally unmolested, and would easily merit the full gem grade were the back centering the equal of the front. The Oakes catalogue value here in CU is $17,500, which appears theoretical only, as we have never had an example of this star to offer in any grade, and can not recall one offered elsewhere in recent years. We do know that non-star 1928C Cleveland notes have realized just about double the Oakes catalogue valuation of $4500 in past auction appearances. Our estimate here is likely conservative in the extreme, as serious collectors realize that this may well be the only opportunity for many years to obtain a 1928C $10 Cleveland star in any grade, let alone one in this state of preservation.

Fr. 190b $10 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note Choice New.
Although just about 100 examples of this number are known, they are virtually all low grade and/or damaged. This is one of only two uncirculated Fr. 190b's known to exist. We sold the other note in January of 2000 for $115,500. This is the first time we have handled this note and if memory serves, it is identical to the piece we did handle. The bronze has remained fully bright, and the note is utterly free of any defect, repair, restoration, or sign of circulation. It has three broad margins, and the bottom, though the smallest of the four, does not touch the design at any point. Although there was no Fr. 190b in our Taylor Family Sale last February, similar finest known pieces realized runaway prices. We would not be at all surprised if a bidding war carried this note far beyond our estimate of...

- $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 490
The First NB of Hawaii at Honolulu
Ch. # 5550
A fabulous note with a pedigree that reads like a "Who's Who" of currency collecting during the past sixty years. This note was first offered as part of the fabled Grinnell collection in 1946, where it was lot 1628. It passed then through the Richard Schermerhorn collection, then to Bill Bailey, whose collection of Territorials was then unrivaled, and finally to Bob Medlar of San Antonio, who put this in his award winning collection of Brown Backs. It was acquired by our consignor when the Medlar collection was sold by Hickman and Oakes in June of 1986. This is the only serial number 1 note known from the Territory of Hawaii, and may well be the most significant note known from any of the Islands' five banks. Pen signed
Very Fine+
, a wonderful trophy note destined to become one of the highlights of the collection it now enters.
