A gorgeous serial number 1 First Charter ace. There is a light smudge in the bottom margin and a couple of stray marks on the left side, and a light handling crease in the right margin, but otherwise this vibrantly colored example is as fresh as the day it was printed in 1874, having even retained all of its original embossing. It comes with an envelope from the bank dating from the early 1900's detailing the presentation of the note by the bank's president and the note's signor, David Boyce.
Crisp Uncirculated,
a new addition to the census of known number one aces, which now rises to six from Ohio, this being the highest grade example of all.

This is a beautiful sheet on this low charter number bank. The penned signatures of the bank officers are in blue and black ink making for a striking comparison. It is noticed that the president is Jon. M. Sherman. Perhaps he is a relative of Secretary of the Treasury, John Sherman, who was from northern Ohio. There is a fold just below the top edge of this sheet and a pencilled code in the upper right corner. The four $5s of this sheet grade
